Healthy Soil + Healthy Plants + Healthy Animals
PathCare VetLab supplies diagnostic services to the veterinary and
farming communities in the Western, Eastern and Southern Cape
provinces, as well as in the Free State and surrounding areas.
In herd health, various aspects play a role in the ability to produce healthy
animals, from the reproduction cycle to raising young animals that in turn
will become the breeding stock or the source of healthy food production.
Tests done to ensure optimal reproduction are:
Sheath wash samples to test for Campylobacter foetus and
Tritrichomonas fetus (eg. PCR tests on PBS samples give more
accurate and faster results).
Udder health – testing of milk samples for pathogens to ensure healthy
milk, and
Laboratory investigation into abortions, stillbirths and failure to
conceive.
The tests done include bacteriology, histological examination of foetal
tissues and placenta, molecular tests for infectious agents such as viral,
protozoal and bacterial diseases, and serology tests on affected dams.
Tests done to ensure optimal growth include:
Trace element analyses on serum or liver samples to determine
possible deficiencies or excesses in the feed or grazing.
Tests on blood for metabolic conditions in high producing dairy
animals to identify subclinical diseases which may lead to drop in milk
production.
Internal parasite investigation, and
Testing for bacterial and viral disease in neonatal and other animals.
Tests done to ensure biosecurity:
Laboratory tests can be used to identify infectious diseases that may
threaten livestock e.g. Rift Valley fever, brucellosis, tuberculosis,
Johne's disease, amongst others.
Diagnostic Laboratory Services are needed to SUSTAIN healthy
animals and their environment.

Bemlab as an analytical laboratory will always regard agriculture testing
as its core business. The increased number of analytical services now
provided, however, has led to various other industries also using Bemlab
services, for example:
Wineries for wine analyses,
The environmental management industry,
Municipalities for water analyses,
Mining,
The landscaping industry and
Golf estates, to name a few.
A major step to increase the technical service level provided to clients was
taken when Dr. Pieter Raath was appointed as the new laboratory
manager in April 2012. The combination of being a soil scientist with a
strong chemistry and viticulture background, as well as having worked
both as an academic and producer, qualifies him to address all the
aspects related to Bemlab's services. He has considerable experience in
the environmental management industry and played a key role in
developing sustained farming principles for a number of companies,
including some of the major retail groups.
Bemlab's quality service and technical support will be maintained and
broadened to new levels not previously available in agricultural analytical
services, both local, as well as national.
