C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a checklist <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n beetles<br />

This checklist is a summary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> present knowledge<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> diversity, habits, <strong>and</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n beetle fauna. It is designed to be a compani<strong>on</strong><br />

volume to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong>al checklist <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

beetles <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Florida (Peck <strong>and</strong> Thomas 1998). Much<br />

work remains to be d<strong>on</strong>e to completely establish<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> identity, validity, <strong>and</strong> accuracy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> presently used<br />

names <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n beetles. Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, much more<br />

field <strong>and</strong> laboratory study is required to document<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> unreported or undescribed species, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> bi<strong>on</strong>omics in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Methods <strong>and</strong> Materials<br />

The body <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this book is a species checklist,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> summarized informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> bi<strong>on</strong>omics <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beetles <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The list was<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structed from two kinds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> primary sources. The<br />

first was modern tax<strong>on</strong>omic revisi<strong>on</strong>s or summaries<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beetle fauna <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g> or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> West Indies,<br />

or adjacent l<strong>and</strong> masses. These are menti<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

where appropriate for each family unit, <strong>and</strong> are<br />

cited in full at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each family unit. If no<br />

modern literature is known to me, a preliminary<br />

list was c<strong>on</strong>structed from Blackwelder’s (1944, 1957)<br />

m<strong>on</strong>umental checklist <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Beetles</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Latin<br />

America <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> update <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this by Arnett (1983).<br />

Blackwelder’s checklist was partly formed by building<br />

up<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> earlier lists by Leng <strong>and</strong> Mutchler<br />

(1914, 1917). Bruner (1951) c<strong>on</strong>tributed <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n<br />

records missed by Blackwelder.<br />

The beetle species described by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n entomologist<br />

Fern<strong>and</strong>o de Zayas (1988) are included<br />

here, as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> suggested syn<strong>on</strong>omies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ivie<br />

(1991). O<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r general works <strong>on</strong> beetles <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g> or<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> West Indies are few. An excepti<strong>on</strong> are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chapters<br />

<strong>on</strong> aquatic beetle families by Spangler (1982).<br />

Although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se are a valuable entry to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> literature,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y c<strong>on</strong>tain little direct or new informati<strong>on</strong><br />

about <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n beetles. The Zoological Record has been<br />

searched from 1950-2003. I have also searched Biological<br />

Abstracts <strong>on</strong> CD-ROM (from 1989-1995),<br />

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (1994 to 2000),<br />

AGRICOLA (from 1969 to 2000), <strong>and</strong> Entomology<br />

Abstracts (vol. 1 to 31, 2000). The primary key<br />

words in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> searches were “<str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>” <strong>and</strong> “Coleoptera.”<br />

After I prepared preliminary lists, I <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n sought<br />

specialists in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g> or elsewhere who could check<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir speciality families for accuracy <strong>and</strong> completeness.<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each specialist is acknowledged<br />

for each family or secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y reviewed.<br />

When possible, data have been added from collecti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>and</strong> some in North America such<br />

as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Field Museum (Chicago), <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Museum<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Comparative Zoology (Harvard University). The<br />

list is intended to be as complete as I have been<br />

able to make it <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time <strong>and</strong> resources available.<br />

It is c<strong>on</strong>structed so that it can serve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> needs
