In summary, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g> has had a complex geological<br />

origin <strong>and</strong> history. It is partly derived from two<br />

former c<strong>on</strong>tinental margins. It has mostly been<br />

submerged. It may have had potential terrestrial<br />

(or smaller water gap) c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Yucatan.<br />

These geological potentials, in combinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

zoogeographic data, are c<strong>on</strong>sistent <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Tertiary<br />

emergent history, <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tinued isolati<strong>on</strong> by water<br />

gaps, <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greatest source <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> over-water col<strong>on</strong>ists<br />

being Central America (directly <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> Yucatan<br />

<strong>and</strong> via Jamaica from H<strong>on</strong>duras). The closing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Central American (Panamanian) isthmus in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pliocene modified oceanic circulati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> formed<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gulf Stream, which must have altered overwater<br />

col<strong>on</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> processes. Lower glacial sea-levels<br />

exposed vastly greater areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> diminished<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> size <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> isolating water gaps. The Pleistocene<br />

changes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> climate in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caribbean are<br />

poorly understood, but seemingly lower sea levels<br />

were coincident <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> increased aridity, <strong>and</strong> this<br />

decreased <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dispersal <strong>and</strong> col<strong>on</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> potential<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mesic terrestrial biotas.<br />
