A private collection, not presently available for study. duced” is used as a term if <strong>the</strong> species occurs in <strong>Cuba</strong> because it was probably brought <strong>the</strong>re through ei<strong>the</strong>r accidental or intentional human activity. Many more species are probably introduced than are indicated here. I have indicated a species as introduced only when a publication has explicitly stated this. I have checked that <strong>the</strong> taxon and distribution data used here agree <strong>with</strong> that in <strong>the</strong> summary list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beetles <strong>of</strong> Florida (Peck and Thomas 1998). Where distributional details are lacking, I may indicate this <strong>with</strong> a question mark. Sometimes, only <strong>the</strong> imprecise words “Antilles, Caribbean or West Indies” have been given in earlier literature. (B). Secondly, data are given on species distributions <strong>with</strong>in <strong>Cuba</strong>. If a species is common and known from about 10 or more published localities, I usually indicate this <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> term “widespread” and give no additional data. Province abbreviations only are given in some cases. Some catalogues (e. g., Blackwelder 1957, Arnett 1983, O’Brien and Wibmer 1982) or taxonomic papers indicate a spe-
cies presence in <strong>Cuba</strong> <strong>with</strong>out listing specific localities or collections <strong>with</strong> voucher specimens. In such cases I cannot give <strong>the</strong>se details. Table 1 is a list <strong>of</strong> abbreviations for <strong>the</strong> presently recognized Provinces <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>. The First Congress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Communist Party <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong> in December 1975 increased <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> provinces from <strong>the</strong> former number <strong>of</strong> six to <strong>the</strong> present fourteen (figure 1). The six pre-1975 provinces were Pinar del Rio, Havana, Matanzas, Las Villas, Camagüey, and Oriente. For example, many older published records are from <strong>the</strong> former Province <strong>of</strong> Oriente, an area which is now composed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> provinces <strong>of</strong> Santiago de <strong>Cuba</strong>, Granma, Guantánamo, and Holguín. Thus, older literature or insect labels may use old province names which may not correspond to <strong>the</strong> present provinces. I have attempted to place <strong>the</strong> old locality records into <strong>the</strong> present provinces. When I have not been able to place a locality from <strong>the</strong> former Oriente Province into its present province I have left it as “Or.” Localities. Within a province, <strong>Cuba</strong>n usage also can place localities <strong>with</strong>in a municipality, which roughly corresponds to a county as used in <strong>the</strong> United States. I list localities <strong>with</strong>in a province from larger (municipalities) down to smaller (town) geographic units, and separate <strong>the</strong>m <strong>with</strong> a comma. Separate localities <strong>with</strong>in a province are separated by a semicolon. Generally more than 10 localities are simply summarized as “widespread.” A frequently used <strong>Cuba</strong>n word that can confuse non-<strong>Cuba</strong>ns is “Central.” Labels may abbreviate this as “Cent.” The term does not mean “in <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong>.” Ra<strong>the</strong>r, in <strong>Cuba</strong>, a “Central” is a sugar mill or sugar refinery which was used as a place name for a collecting locality. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are indicated on <strong>the</strong> most recent Atlas <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong> (1978), but some names have been changed and <strong>the</strong> sites are no longer identifiable. Table 2 is a list <strong>of</strong> relatively obscure but important localities which may not be easily located by users outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>. Even if no precise localities are known to me, I insert <strong>the</strong> heading “<strong>Cuba</strong> localities” and leave a blank space so that notes or records can be added by users. Published localities which I have been unable to locate are indicated <strong>with</strong> “?” Bionomics. After information on <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> a species <strong>with</strong>in <strong>Cuba</strong>, I present notes on habitat, hosts, field biology, pest status, and references to <strong>the</strong> natural history or ecology and o<strong>the</strong>r important data when known. I use <strong>the</strong> term bionomics to be roughly equivalent to a summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> species. Full citation for A <strong>Checklist</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Beetles</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong> 13 references on <strong>the</strong>se topics is given at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each family. <strong>Data</strong> on insects <strong>of</strong> agricultural importance or status as a pest in o<strong>the</strong>r ways in <strong>Cuba</strong> are <strong>of</strong>ten drawn from Bruner et al. (1975), which is usually not specifically cited. Additions to this list are in Vàzquez et al. (1992). I have cited host plant names as reported, ei<strong>the</strong>r as common name or genus and/or species. Family names for genera and genera for English common names may be found in a botanical reference such as Heywood (1978) or Willis (1980). Collections. Locations <strong>of</strong> voucher specimens documenting <strong>the</strong> distribution records are usually indicated by <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city or collection which contains <strong>the</strong> material (not by <strong>the</strong> now common practice <strong>of</strong> an abbreviation or coden). Table 3 is a list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se cities or collections as published or known to us or reviewing specialists which hold identified <strong>Cuba</strong>n material. While <strong>the</strong>re is a growing trend to use codens for identifying insect collections, I find <strong>the</strong>se to be <strong>of</strong>ten confusing, not easily memorized, and not “user-friendly,” especially to non-taxonomists and insect workers outside <strong>of</strong> Canada and <strong>the</strong> USA. I think my use <strong>of</strong> cities or collections to be more readily and immediately recognizable. Even if no repositories <strong>of</strong> specimens are known to me I insert <strong>the</strong> heading and leave space in which notes can be added by users.
