Welcome back to another productive year, we
hope that everyone had a relaxing and
enjoyable break and are ready to slip back
into work mode. Day one (hopefully) set the
tone for the rest of the year – we had excellent
attendance, students pristine in uniform and
positive attitudes with students’ and teachers
straight into productive work. We have
already had an extremely busy start to the
year, as you will read.
Welcome to New Families and Students
A special welcome to our Year 7 students and
families and any new students in other year
levels, we hope our various educational
programs will fully engage and help develop
positive skills and knowledge for your
children.
Welcome to new staff to our Campus and
College
Parent Information Nights and Year 7
Camp
As you are aware a letter was sent home
informing parents that these events had been
cancelled due to the implications of Industrial
Action. We would strongly encourage all
parents to please make contact with the
college if you have any queries and concerns.
The Home Group teacher for your child is
usually the best ‘first’ contact.
Year 7 Activity Day
As the camp did not proceed we intend
developing an activity day for all our Year 7
students which will centre on fun activities for
interaction between the Home Group teachers
and within the teams to help strengthen the
sense of belonging and friendship. More
information will be coming home soon with
specific details.
Immunisations – Ground Breaking
Experience
Last week our Year 7 boys and girls had their
immunisations for both the Gardisil and
Chicken Pox and the year 9 boys had their
Gardisil. You may have heard on the news
that this was the first time that Boys had been
given the Gardisil inoculation. It is really
important that if your child missed out on the
inoculations for any reason to do a quick
follow up (information was sent home with
your child about where etc… , please ring
directly to the council, as they conduct
immunisations at other centres on a regular
basis) so they can receive the follow up
inoculations through school to save you the
additional effort as a parent.
Hot Weather
As the weather has been hot and looks like
continuing that way for a while we would
encourage all students to bring water bottles –
they may bring them into class, rather than
needing to leave the classroom.
Swimming Sports
By the time you read this Newsletter the
swimming sports will have taken place – we
look forward to hearing of the result in the
next Newsletter.
Lunchtime Activities
There are a range of different lunchtime
activities available for students please check
with Kellie or Team Leaders so you can
participate in them. The types of activities
include:- Walking Group, Games Club, Chess
Club to name a few.
I s s u e 1
Welcome to all of our new students and
families and those returning to Copperfield
College. Also, we’d like to extend a warm
welcome to the new staff in H – Team and
across the College. As Team Leaders, we
look forward to developing strong
partnerships with all members of our team;
students, parents and staff, and as such we
have had a very positive start to the New
Year.
All of our new Year 7 and Year 8 students
have settled in to Secondary School at
Copperfield College and their new routines
quickly and with enthusiasm. We have
noticed that our current Year 8 students have
made the transition from Year 7 with ease
and confidence. The Year 7 students have
already experienced some of what
Secondary School has to offer; they have
learnt how to open their combination locks
on their lockers, they are comfortable
reading their timetables and have settled into
all their subject classes with ease and
confidence.
We’d like to take this opportunity to
introduce ourselves and our Team structure.
H – Team has two Team Leaders, us; Karen
Martin and Gina Constas, and we job share
as we both work part-time. However, one of
the two of us is available every day of the
week. In 2013, H – Team has seven Home
Groups; four in Year 7 and three in Year 8.
Our Home Groups and Home Group
teachers are as follows: 71H – Kimberley
Swindells, 72H – Libby Derks, 73H –
Andrew Atherton, 74H – Karen Anson, 81H
H Team News
– Lucy Bell, 82H – Ross Waterman and 83H
– Pam Finn. Elizabeth Talevski is the Year 7
and 8 Campus Leader and overseas both
Junior Teams (E and H) at Sydenham. Your
Home Group teacher is your first point of
contact for your student but you are also able
to contact us at any time with concerns or
queries. Please check your student’s diary
regularly for notes from teachers and
homework tasks. Please support him or her
to complete their homework.
Term 1 is a very eventful time; The Year 7
Notebook Rollout was on Thursday and
Friday in Week 1; Year 7, 9 and 10
Immunisations were on Wednesday the 13 th
of February. On Tuesday the 19 th of
February the Year 7 – 10 students at Kings
Park and Sydenham will be going to
Swimming Sports at Oak Park Aquatic
Centre. Hopefully the weather will be
perfect and everyone will enjoy the
swimming races, fun competitions and going
down the water slide. The Team colours are
pink or purple and we are busy making
banners for H-team. Go H-Team!!! Also,
School Photos are on Friday the 1 st of March
and the H-Team Year 7 students will be
going to the Melbourne Zoo as part of their
Classification Unit in Science on Tuesday
the 19 th of March.
Thank you to students, staff and parents for
all of your support.
Year 7 reflections on their transition to Copperfield
My transition from year 6 to 7 was really
easy. All the teachers really helped all the
students to fit into Copperfield College over
the first few days of school.
Anthony Zaccaria 74H
The transition between Primary School and
High School is one of the greatest things I
have ever done in my life. Simply starting
with the greatest building and facilities in the
school, the greatest students and friends I
have seen, met and made friends with at
Copperfield College. I am loving the
curriculum the school has to offer. The
transition between Parkwood Green Primary
and Copperfield College has been so good; I
want it to happen every single year.
Christopher Tsiflidis 74H
With the move from Primary School to High
School, I got really confused with
everything. The timetable, the locker
combination, and everything seemed
overwhelming. I feel like I am growing up. I
miss primary school, but really like high
school so far.
of recycling old,
unwanted or
damaged athletic shoes. Please bring
unwanted athletic shoes to the
As a team we ask that you read the
Look for labels such as oil
products bought the less
forests are cut down. A
small step to support
environmental change.
Mobile Muster:
Round up your old
mobile phones,
chargers and batteries
and bring them into the
Battery World offers the only
national opportunity to recycle
responsibly by disposing dead
domestic batteries at our College.
The batteries that we
are recycling are: A,
AA, AAA, C, D, 9V
and 4V batteries,
laptop batteries and
camera batteries.
There will be a
In Victoria education is compulsory for children aged between 6 and 16. When students are enrolled, it is expected they will attend
every day of each term.
Parents will receive notification of any student-free days.
It is crucial that students develop habits of regular attendance at an early age. This includes arriving at school, and each class, on time.
Students who regularly miss days of school are at risk of missing out on learning the basic building blocks in subjects, and may
experience long term difficulties with their learning.
School attendance helps students develop social skills, such as friendship building, team work, communication skills and healthy selfesteem.
An absence from school requires a doctor’s certificate or note of explanation that has been written and signed by a
parent/guardian. The note should accompany the student on the first day they return to school after the absence. If the
absence is expected to be longer than one day, please notify Lorraine on 9361 3891.

What do you need to do to stand for election?
P a g e 7
The principal will issue a Notice of Election and Call for Nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All
school council elections must be completed by the end of March unless the usual time line has been varied by the Minister.
the Parent category.
DEECD employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not engaged in work are eligible to nominate for parent
Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal with the time stated on the Notice of Election. You will receive
a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination.
Generally, if there are more nominations received that there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the
weeks after the call for nominations has closed.
Consider standing for election to council this year
Be sure to vote in the elections
Contact the principal Mr. T. Simpson for further information.
School Council Elections 2013
