Farewell Class of 2012
On Tuesday 23rd October we celebrated
with the class of 2012. After all the hard
work that students had put it into this year
and the last 12 years of their schooling, it
was finally a day to let their hair down.
Students dressed up in a variety of colourful
and fun costumes and enjoyed a day
themed around “rock and roll”.
students looked elegant and very grown
up. It was a great night involving lovely
food and lots of dancing! Good luck
Class of 2012!
As part of the Senior VCAL Transition
program, students attended Sunshine
Hospital for an induction tour with Jo
Spence. She explained the volunteering
opportunities on offer and the ideas for
community projects for 2013. Students
were able to see parts of the hospital and
listen to hospital staff detail the programs
Year 12 Transition
that students can be involved in as part of
their PDS work next year.
Gardening
Project
For our year 11 Community
VCAL project, Ron, Duke and I,
Tony, decided to do gardening,
and spent several Monday
mornings with Ms Shona
Gilchrist, our Gardener, working
in the gardens of the Delahey
Campus.
We shovelled bark, soil and used
wheelbarrows, shovels and
spades. We dug holes and
planted new shrubs and flowers
under instructions. We hope to
have improved our environment
here at Delahey.
We had fun and learned new
skills.
Year 11 – 12 Transition - VCE and Senior VCAL
VCE Students at Melbourne University
Friday 23rd November saw the beginning of the Year 11 – 12 Transition. VCE
students went to Melbourne University and heard some very positive and inspiring
speakers who talked about study, University life and working to achieve goals. It
was a very successful day and, as always, Copperfield students were outstanding
ambassadors for the College.
The transition program has continued at school, with students having the opportunity
to experience each of their subjects and begin the work for Unit 3 studies
VCAL Students working on Planning.
VCAL Students participated in an induction tour of Sunshine Hospital hosted by Jo
Spence. Students were introduced to the hospital's volunteer program and the
opportunities on offer for their Community Projects for Senior PDS. This was
followed by a launch on campus on Monday. There was also a quick trip
to Brimbank Park for some team building and communication activities.
There has been a very positive feeling around the Campus with students quite
focused on their subjects and learning about the requirements for next year.
We look forward to working with the class of 2013 next year.
Women in Workplace Leadership Workshop 2012
The globally known brand ‘Optus’, believes in giving back to the community as
much as it can, and that is exactly what it did when it hosted the ‘Women in
Workplace Leadership Workshop 2012’ on 24th October 2012. This was the
second year that girls from our Delahey Campus were invited to this
knowledgeable and fun workshop that was coordinated by 6 talented mentors,
who were also employees of optus.
The girls that rode the bus to the Optus building, located at the heart of
Melbourne CBD were, Jessica Siljanovski (1G3), Izel Shevki (1G2), Lauren
Sahakian (1G3), Edlin Segran (1G3), Mehak Sheikh (1G4), Andrea Hajenian
(1G4), Dareen Flifel (1G4), Haylea Whiteman (1Y1), Amanda Ngo (1Y3),
Stefani Risteska (1Y3), Sally Truong (1Y3), Madison Jackson (1Y4), Beray
Uzunbay (1Y4), Zeel Patel (1P3) and Francesca Rizzo (1P3), accompanied by
Ms. Chiodo (campus principal) and Ms O’shea (careers counsellor). At the
workshops, we were enlightened with information about Leadership skills, spoke
about different individuals that we believe are leaders, shared our own thoughts
on various topics and improved any qualities we thought were weak with the help
of the mentors. The workshop was divided into 3 sessions and we all got the
chance to converse with each other and all the mentors by the end of the day.
Further along the day, we explored different aspects of leadership and team work.
During the day, we were also offered with a delicious, healthy meal & fruit
snack, followed by a small talk by one of the recruiting agents at Optus and
finally a few ‘thank you’ speeches.
It is certain that the girls and myself, gained a lot from this experience and were
completely honoured to be chosen to attend it. We are very thankful to Optus for
their outstanding service to the community and to ABCN (Australian Business
and Community
Network) for their
support. Hopefully we
will employ them into
our everyday life as well
as pass on the details to
fellow students.
Mehak Sheikh (1G4)
Community Project
As part of my Personal development
community service project, in term two
I was running production shows at
Kings Park. I was a part of the
backstage crew. My duty was to
manage a group of students and I had
to instruct them in what they were to
do when a scene change occurred.
Some of the props included: lockers,
beds, background scenery and a
blackboard. We had to lift and quickly
organise the props in ten seconds!
We had to wear black so the audience
couldn’t see us. The three managers
that I worked with were Ms Dedes, Ms
Jensen and Faalata. All together I
worked many hours in preparation for
the shows and in total the school put on
8 shows. I enjoyed working on
production because it gave me
something to look forward to and
meeting and managing new people.
I would like to thank Ms.Alessio, Ms.
Dedes and Ms.Jensen for their help and
support.
Strengthening of Community Partnership
with Sunshine Hospital
All Senior VCAL Personal Development Stand (PDS) students are required to
undertake a community project as a major part of their senior outcomes. This
year, students participated in a project at Sunshine Hospital. The project involved
working with staff in the Hospital’s Gem Garden. Jo Spence, Team Leader,
Community Engagement & Volunteers-Western Health, was so impressed with
the students and their work that she wanted to extend the scope of the new
partnership. During this term, Jo met with staff from the Delahey Campus to
propose some challenging, yet exciting initiatives for students to develop into
senior community partnerships for 2013.
(Con Damoulakis (Community Partnerships Leader), Jo Spence (Sunshine
Hospital), Mary Chiodo (Campus Principal Delahey), Sarah Maric (Senior PDS
Teacher), Jason Austin (PDS Strand Leader)

Systems Engineering
It was a great year for the Year 12 systems
engineering students who made some fantastic and
innovative self-managed projects. The students had
to design, produce, test and evaluate their products.
Herman Chhokar made a quad copter that he was
able to fly. Jake Mifsud and Marc Delnegro each
made a retro arcade/jukebox had some fun play
with them. Nick Ilievski made an all-terrain mobile
helicopter. Other students in the class made various
projects with great success.
Education Maintenance Allowance -
Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013:
The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with financial assistance to cover the cost of educational
expenses including textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for their child up until the age of 16.
From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA to better target financial support to families on
lower incomes. Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible recipients at all year levels up to age
16, with an additional increase for parents with students in Years Prep and 7 in recognition of the additional costs
at these transition points.
In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in primary school (years 1-6) will receive a payment
of $150. Families with children in secondary school (Year 8 up until the age of 16) will receive an annual payment
of $250.
The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA families has been discontinued as a separate payment
from 2013. However, additional funding has been incorporated into the EMA meaning that parents of children
in Prep and Year 7 will receive boosted EMA payments of $200 and $300 respectively in those years.
From 2013, the EMA will no longer be paid 50/50 between the parent and the school. The 50% school portion of
the EMA will no longer be paid to schools on behalf of parents. However, $62 million over four years will be redirected
to the State’s most needy schools to assist families on lower incomes. These funds will form part of the
school Student Resource Packages to be allocated at the local level.
New EMA payment option
From 2013, on the EMA application form you can choose to have your EMA payment;
Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your nominated bank account or
Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection or
Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use towards education expenses
The introduction of the new payment option to have the EMA payment directed to the school provides parents
with extra flexibility to assist with budgeting towards education expenses.
