Welcome Back to Term 2!
It has certainly been a very busy term so far,
with more to come. Welcome to Mr Adam
Rapone who has taken over from Ms Rapa.
Congratulations on the safe arrival of Ms
Rapa’s son, Benjamin. Also welcome to Ms
Dolu who is replacing Ms Tandon who also
has a new son.
College Athletics Sports
Congratulations to students who competed in
our College Athletics Sports a few weeks ago
The Sports were very well attended and some
terrific results were achieved.
Attitudes to School Survey
Students in all year levels completed the
Attitudes to School Survey over the last few
weeks. The results from this statewide survey
will be available later in the year. We use the
results of this survey to assist us to revise and
review our college programs.
Bullying Surveys Results
The bullying surveys for all students in years
7 – 10 have concluded and Ms Kellie Jasper
our Campus Psychologist is in the process of
providing feedback to all year levels in
assemblies. There will be additional follow-up
with individuals and groups over the next few
weeks.
NAPLAN
Please note that NAPLAN testing is taking
place across the State this week for all
students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 students. The
tests are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday, providing very important
information about your child’s development
of Literacy and Numeracy skills as well as
information about how well our programs in
these areas are going.
Curriculum Day
Note also that Wednesday May 22 is a
Curriculum day so students will not be
required at school. Curriculum Days are
important days for teachers to revise and
develop programs and strategies to improve
what we do.
Performing Arts Concert
Pleased be reminded that our End of Semester
Performing Arts Concert is being held on May
28 at 7pm at Kings Park Campus. This will be
a ticketed event and will be a great celebration
of the effort and talent of our performing arts
students.
Year 10 Camp – An Alternative?
Please note that although the Year 10 Camp
was cancelled this year as a result of the AEU
Industrial Action, since the industrial action
has now ceased options are being explored to
see if an alternative program can be
organised.
Completing Work, Choosing Pathways
It is not too long, six or so weeks, when
teachers will be writing a report on your
child’s progress in their development of
understanding skill in all their subjects. We
encourage every student to complete all
required work, on time, to a high standard, so
great results are achieved! We hope that all
parents and carers are encouraging and
supporting their children to do the same – it is
well known that habits learnt at school are
behaviours that assist the achievement of
success after school.
Finally, note that Year 10 students have
started the process of selecting a career
through Pathways sessions at school and
towards the end of this term get seriously into
the task of selecting future courses and
subjects.
There have been many fundraisers and
occasions over the past couple of months,
at Sydenham Campus. This year
Copperfield College is participating in the
Woolworths ‘Earn & Learn’ program; the
collection box for the stickers you collect is
located at the general office.
We have collected Red SIDS bags filled
with unwanted clothing. SIDS uses these
items to fundraise with all profits going to
Cot Death Research.
On the last day of Term 1, (Thursday 28th
March) we held a Casual Clothes Day for
the Good Friday Appeal. As a campus, we
raised over $600!
The National Day of Action against Bulling
was held on the 15th of March and to
honour the day, SRC members gave out
orange icy-poles and wristbands to
students. Many of the students were happy
about this event and understand the
significance of this day.
Many of you may know that on the 8th of
March, it was International Women’s Day.
LOTE News
Copperfield College welcomes Massimo Noviello,
our new Italian language assistant. Massimo is from a
Naples and a recent graduate from Ca Foscari
University in Venice. He joins the Italian staff till the
end of the year. Massimo will be working with small
groups of students and helping them with their
conversation skills whilst also helping the Italian staff
with the preparation of new teaching material. We are
very fortunate to have Massimo on staff this year as
there are only 27 Italian assistants available state wide
and Copperfield's application was one of the
successful ones!
Personal Goods
Brought to School at
Owner's Risk
Personal property is often brought to
school by students, staff and visitors.
This can include mobile phones,
electronic games, calculators, toys,
sporting equipment and cars parked
on school premises. The Department
does not hold insurance for personal
property brought to schools and it
has no capacity to pay for any loss or
damage to such property.
SRC News
During home group, purple and green
ribbons were passed to all girls, which
many of us proudly wore representing the
integrity of all the hard working women
around the world.
Most recently, five members of the SRC
have been nominated to represent
Copperfield College at the 2013 Western
Metro Regional Student Conference at
Braybrook College. This is an interactive
program which lets students discuss issues,
share information, and learn from students
from different schools about what their
SRC is doing right and how we can
improve.
So far this year has been very successful in
fundraising and raising awareness. The
SRC are excited to announce more events
this year!
absence.
Regular attendance is essential to
make sure that your child’s learning
is not disrupted.
Student Illness
A reminder to parents and students that
phone calls home regarding student
illness at school must come through the
Welcome to term two and the beginning of
the cold and flu season.
Since term one, H-team has been busy. We
had the Year 7 Iron Form Day, which was
the final orientation activity for the cohort.
The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed
themselves. We were very fortunate with the
weather, and all students had the opportunity
to socialise with other Year 7 students.
Students participated in home group team
building activities, a trivia session and
competitive relays.
On Wednesday the 24th of April the
College participated in an Athletics Carnival
at Keilor Park and we would like to
congratulate H team for achieving the
highest junior team score. Well done to all
the students who participated on the day. H-
team students, as usual, put on a great
display of colour and team spirit.
NAPLAN testing will affect all year 7s in
week five of this term. Year 7s attended a
Verbal Combat performance highlighting the
effects of bullying. The year 8s will be
attending a Medieval Incursion on Friday
May 24 th . This will provide students with a
great learning opportunity. A reminder that
payment and permission slips need to be
submitted. Please note there is a Curriculum
Day on Wednesday the 22 nd of May and
students will not be required at school.
At the end of this term, Semester 1 reports
will be posted. Teachers are currently
assessing students’ work
H Team News
and learning achievements in preparation for
completing their reports later this term.
Therefore, the school will have a Correction
Day (student free day) on the 14 th of June.
Iron Form Day
The day was full of excitement with every kid
from every home group trying their very best
to have their home group be the first home
group on the Iron Man Award. When it came
to presenting, all the kids weren’t afraid to
show what they made to represent their home
group. Mascots ranged from an eagle to a
clown, someone even dressed as a robot. The
day was filled with smiles all around, but it
wasn’t over yet.
With a sausage sizzle at lunch there came the
challenging part of the day. All home groups
were to participate in what was called the Iron
Form challenges. From the classic egg and
spoon race to wet ’n’ wild, there was no stopping
what we thought was a great day.
B & K Team News
Term Two is well and truly underway, and
teachers are very pleased to see students in all
classes taking their studies seriously. All
Year 9 & 10s are expected to make the most
of the learning opportunities presented, and
to ensure that all class and homework tasks
are completed. This will provide students
with the best preparation when they begin to
study for their Semester Exams.
The Year 10 Exams will be held from June
4 th -11 th , and Year 9 exams are scheduled for
June 7 th -13 th .
As the weather begins to cool down, students
are reminded that they must wear official
Copperfield College uniform items at all
times. The College sports rugby top is not a
substitute for the red jumper, and is only
allowed to be worn during PE classes. No
other jumpers, jackets, hoodies or coloured
scarves are permitted, nor are beanies.
Students are able to wear the navy College
provide these items.
Year 10 students have begun a series of
career lessons with Jenny Zahra, which will
culminate in a Year 10 Career Day at our
Delahey Campus on June 12 th . Students are
also being given the opportunity to
participate in work experience in the last
week of term two. Any student who thinks
they would be interested, should meet with
Challenge Day Subject– Semester One Update
With City tours, projects and scavenger hunts
done and dusted with in Term 1: 91K, 92K
and 91B have recently completed their Level
One First Aid Course. Last week, students
participated in a wheelchair basketball
incursion taken by Garry Connor from
WheelTalk Australia and also attended a
lecture by Paralympic guest speakers Leanne
DelToso and Shelly Chaplin.
Excursions coming up include our day visit to
the Lady Northcote YMCA Recreation Camp,
which provides students with the opportunity
get out of their comfort zone and participate
in activities such as a high ropes course, leap
of faith, giant swing and mountain biking.
Students will also visit the Melbourne Sports
and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) where they will
learn to dive and pin
drop off the diving boards and platforms from
qualified Diving Victoria Staff.
All students involved in this program need to
ensure that they have paid their $175.00
Challenge Day fee to be eligible to participate
in the upcoming excursions. A reminder also
goes out to classes 93K, 92B and 93B that
they can also begin to pay this fee (if they
have not already done so) in preparation for
when they pick the subject up in semester
two.
Wellbeing Programs
Year 10 Wellbeing Day
In March Year 10 students welcomed 22
presenters from 10 community and
professional organisations for an actionpacked
day of social-emotional education.
Issues such as alcohol, relationships,
violence, relaxation and healthy eating were
presented by experts in each field and
enthusiastically explored by our students. We
thank speakers from the Family Planning
Clinic, Step Back Think, Life Choices
Incorporated, ISIS, Brimbank Youth
Services, Explore Counselling services and
Department of Justice.
A free BBQ lunch and performance by the
much-loved local band, Masketta Fall, along
with some interesting take-home bags,
rewarded participants for their efforts during
this busy and demanding day. We would like
to acknowledge the following organisations
for bag donations: Officeworks, McDonalds,
State Emergency Service and National
Foods.
Drumbeat Year 8 Boys' Program
Travis, from Brimbank Youth Services, is
leading 10 Year 8 boys (especially selected
for their determination) to get involved in an
exciting program that uses the djembe
(bongo) drums as a tool for exploring and
expressing social-emotional issues. Kellie
and the boys have just started this seven week
program which promises to be a lot of fun as
well as a great challenge.
Friends for Youth Year 9 Program
Kat, from Brimbank Youth Services, and
Kellie are co-facilitating this challenging
social-emotional program for self-selected
Year 9 students keen to learn new skills to
increase confidence and improve coping
strategies. It is also proving to be enjoyable
and challenging and the hot chocolates and
music add to the appeal. The program runs
until the end of the term.
Sydenham Campus Bullying Survey
Each year, across each of the three campuses
students participate in an online survey as
another opportunity to express any concerns
about bullying in an anonymous and
confidential manner. Results for Sydenham
campus reinforce our school as a safe place to
be, but also brings to the attention of staff and
students where further work and support is
needed.
Year 7 students were further challenged on
the subject of verbal bullying when a
performance group visited and presented
"Verbal Combat" last week.
City of Melton Individual Sport Grants
Congratulations to Blake Bower and Billie-
Dane Brigham, both of year 7, for their
successful nomination and application for
Individual Sport Grants. Both Blake and
Billie-Dane are worthy recipients and we
thank the City of Melton for this opportunity.
Weekly Activities:
Breakfast Club
A reminder that students are welcome
to join in the happy environment and
delicious breakfast created by foods
teacher, Cheryl Desailly, at Breakfast
Club each Tuesday and Wednesday
morning. Particularly as the weather
gets colder, Cheryl is much
appreciated for providing such a warm
and welcoming start to the day.
Breakfast is served between 8.00am
and 8.45am Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sydenham Campus
Chess Challenge
32 students have taken on the
challenge and entered our annual
chess tournament. Each Tuesday
lunchtime competitors gather in the
library for eagerly anticipated matches
involving girls and boys from each
year level. Certainly last week's
feature was the big play-off between
the two brothers so evenly matched in
skill and determination, with the win
narrowly going to the older sibling.
We look forward to more great
matches and congratulate all entrants
for having a go.
Maths Tutoring
Ms Keating, Maths coordinator and
teacher, is available in C6 every
Tuesday lunchtime to help support
students needing to learn or revise
anything mathematical. This
particularly suits young people
needing to reinforce their maths skills.
Sydenham Games Club
There is nothing better on a Friday
lunchtime than being warmly greeted
by the smiling faces of Charlene and
Paulina from Elevate in the library.
Students are welcome to come alone
or bring a friend as there is always a
quiet game such as Connect 4 or
something more raucous such as
Billionaire to join in with.

In Victoria education is compulsory for children aged between 6 and 16. When students are enrolled, it is expected they will attend
every day of each term.
Parents will receive notification of any student-free days.
It is crucial that students develop habits of regular attendance at an early age. This includes arriving at school, and each class, on time.
Students who regularly miss days of school are at risk of missing out on learning the basic building blocks in subjects, and may
experience long term difficulties with their learning.
School attendance helps students develop social skills, such as friendship building, team work, communication skills and healthy selfesteem.
An absence from school requires a doctor’s certificate or note of explanation that has been written and signed by a
parent/guardian. The note should accompany the student on the first day they return to school after the absence. If the
absence is expected to be longer than one day, please notify Lorraine on 9361 3891.
