VCE Exams and the GAT
Welcome back for Term 2, this term is
always very busy especially for VCE
students who have mid year exams.
Students have been preparing for these
exams throughout the semester and we
would like to acknowledge the extra
work of staff who came in during the
term 1 break to run revision lectures.
There will be another round of revision
lectures coming up in the next few
weeks and again we encourage students
to attend.
Also this term, Year 12 VCE students
will be required to sit the General
Achievement Test (GAT). Our Campus
Leaders have placed a detailed
description of the requirements and use
of the GAT in this newsletter. All
students studying a Year 12 VCE subject
have been given a copy of the 2012
Exams Navigator student information
publication produced by the Victorian
Curriculum & Assessment Authority
(VCAA). This booklet contains all of the
necessary information regarding
examination guidelines and rules. We
would like to draw particular attention to
the page where the rules on mobile
phones and other electronic devices are
contained. We encourage all students
and their families to read and re read this
section. These rules are enforced by the
Exam Supervisors and the consequences
for any breaches can be very serious.
Any student who has misplaced their
booklet must see Ms. Aleardi or Ms.
Ryan immediately to collect a
replacement copy. Any details regarding
exams can also be accessed from the
VCAA site at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au
Study Skills Focus
Whilst we all place our energies into
having a terrific term; a reminder that
our campus provides a unique program
to assist students to maximise their
results in all subjects. Our „study skills‟
program is designed to pass on the
knowledge and expertise that we have
accumulated at the school level to our
students. These sessions are co ordinated
and presented by Mrs. Kozlevcar. Much
planning goes into that program and we
expect all students to not only attend, but
to apply the advice and new knowledge
gained. Please do not hesitate to contact
her for more information.
VCAL Update
Year 11 and 12 VCAL students have
been working diligently towards
completing their outcomes for Term 2.
All VCAL students have copies of their
Learning Matrices that detail tasks that
need to be completed to attain
competency in each of the VCAL
domains. Articles on the interesting
projects that VCAL students have been
working on will be in our next
newsletter.
Mid Year Exams and GAT
The Mid Year Exam program begins on Tuesday June 12th and concludes on Thursday June 14th with the GAT. All
students completing a Year 12 VCE subject must sit the GAT. The General Achievement Test is a test of general
knowledge and skills in:
*written communication
*mathematics, science and technology
*humanities, the arts and social sciences.
These areas are very broad. Each represents a body of general knowledge and skills that students are likely to have built
up through their school years.
Because it is a general test, no special study is required for the GAT. Students will already have done preparation for the
GAT in past study of subjects like English, Mathematics, Science and History, where they have built up general
knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning. These are the knowledge and skills that will be tested.
The GAT results are used to check school based and exam assessments and it is important that students have the GAT
results in the event that something happens to prevent them from sitting any other exam. In this case it will be used to
provide a derived score.
Students can get a good idea of the questions by looking at previous GAT papers which can be found online
at http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/exams/gat/gat.html. Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these
questions and note that all the information needed to work out the right answer is provided.
We will provide students with the opportunity to practise for the GAT where they will sit a practice test which will be
marked and feedback will be provided. This will take place on May 14th. It is expected that all students required to sit
the GAT will complete the practice test.
Year 11 Debating
The Year 11 Team has been involved in two debates.
The first time they debated whether “Australia has been
a good international neighbour”. The team consisted of
Paige Stone, Navdeep Kaur and Dylan D‟Ruza. In the
second debate they discussed the topic “That schools
should have to accept 25% of their students from
disadvantaged background”. In that debate Copperfield
was represented by Julie Nguyen, Lauren Sahakian and
Daniela Ly. The debaters have been ably supported by
Simran Randhawa and Alana
Sheriden. Copperfield won the first
debate and just lost the second
debate. Navdeep Kaur was awarded
best speaker in the first debate. The
students have been very responsible
and organised in their preparation
and delivery. Good luck for the next
debates!

Dear Parents/Carers,
There have been a number of cases of head
lice reported during this term. Students with
head lice are required under the Health
(Infectious Diseases) Regulations to be
excluded from school until treatment has
commenced.
This means a student‟s head lice can be
treated on the day and the student can then
return to school the following day.
Please take the time to check your child‟s
hair as soon as possible and treat appropriately.
If you require further information the
following website offers advice:
www.dhs.vic.gov.au/phd/headlice/
index.htm
Student Accident
Insurance
Parents / Carers are reminded
that the Department does not
provide personal accident
insurance for students. Parents
and guardians are responsible for
paying the cost of medical
treatment for injured students,
including any transport costs.
Reasonably low cost accident
insurance policies are available
from commercial insurers .
Personal Goods
Brought to School
at Owner's Risk
Personal property is often brought to
school by students, staff and visitors.
This can include mobile phones,
electronic games, calculators, toys,
sporting equipment and cars parked
on school premises.
The Department does not hold
insurance for personal property
brought to schools and it has no
capacity to pay for any loss or
damage to such property.

Interschool Chess
Copperfield College participated in its first
interschool chess competition for 2012.
Students from Kings Park and Delahey
journeyed to St Mary‟s Coolaroo to play
against schools such as Penleigh and
Eessenden Grammar, Australian
International Academy and Northcote High.
The team consisted of Stephanie
Dimopoulos, Steven Nguyen, Rauda Rozali,
Hilman Pramudiarta and Fabian Brito. For
many of the team it was their first
experience of tournament chess and the
team performed very well. Highlights
included Rauda winning best female player
and Hilman winning four games out of
seven earning a credit certificate. Special
mention must be made of Fabian who whilst
playing opponents four years older than
himself was still able to win two games.
The students had an enjoyable day and got
to meet many fellow chess players from
other schools. The next tournament is in
Term 2 on the 18th June. If you like chess
why not come along? See your local library
staff for details.
Delahey Campus Psychologist
Judy Scarfe is our Delahey Campus Psychologist. She heads our College
Wellbeing Team. Judy is available to students who wish to consult her about a
wide range of personal concerns. These concerns frequently involve relationship
issues, deaths and illnesses of loved ones, school motivation problems, learning
and concentration difficulties, mood and behaviour regulation, and sleep
disturbance. Other issues less frequently raised include internet, cigarette
smoking, and drug and alcohol control, homelessness, depression, anxiety,
suicidal thoughts, anger management, gender identity, bullying. Consultations
with Judy are confidential unless there is a risk of self-harm or harm to others, or
the student is the subject of abuse, in which case appropriate disclosures will be
made to ensure safety. Referrals can be made to other agencies, should that
appear to be warranted.
Appointments are made with Judy directly or through the General Office.
Students are obliged to catch up with any class work missed because of
S.R.C News from Delahey
Put a smile on your mums face
May is here and so we are getting ready to treat our
mothers on mother‟s day this year! Have you ever
been stuck for ideas of what to get your mum for
mother‟s day? Well how about a beautiful bouquet
of flowers bought fresh from the market and
prepared especially for your mum? Sounds great, we
know! The SRC in conjunction with Ms.Marics
VCAL class this year have decided to run a bouquet
stall for students to purchase a beautiful bunch of
fresh, vibrant flowers for a low cost of $8 a bunch.
The sale will be held on 9th and 10th of May so
students should be ready to purchase the flowers
which will support a great cause. All proceedings
will be donated to Sunshine Hospital‟s Maternity
Ward who help care for women and babies from all
over the western suburbs. We hope that all students
will purchase a bunch of flowers and help support
our local hospital.
School Assembly
Wednesday the 2nd of May was Delahey‟s first
assembly. Representatives from Vision Australia and
a special Labrador in training visited and spoke to
students about their wonderful assistance to vision
impaired people in need of a dog to guide them
through daily tasks. The assembly was a great success
Year 11 Geography Camp
Students from Year 11
Geography took part in a 3
day camp in late March
where they investigated
both volcanic and coastal
environments. On the first
two days the volcanic
environments of the
western plains were
visited. Places such as Red
Rock, Lake Corangamite,
Tower Hill and Mt Eccles
were researched and we
even all climbed Mt
Elephant.
On the third day we began
our coastal experience by
visiting Peterborough, Port
Campbell, Loch Ard
Gorge and lastly the
spectacular 12 Apostles.
Overall it was a wonderful
three days as the students
were able to learn and
visualise a lot of
information that had
previously only been
discussed in the text books.
A very BIG thank you to
Don, for driving the bus
and to Bella Esmail
Moore, for all of her assistance over the three days.
Year 12 Geography Camp
In the first week of term 2 students studying Year 12 Geography went on a two day camp to the
Goulburn Valley region.
As part of their core studies on the Murray Darling Basin, students were taken to the Barmah
Forest to see what a wetland is like as well as experience a cruise down the Murray River. Students
were given the opportunity to see how water in the Murray Darling is used for environmental
purposes as well as for domestic, agricultural and recreational uses.
Students were also taken to visit a range of different irrigation areas as part of their preparation
for the core topic.
Overall it was an enjoyable and very informative two days.
A big thank you to Don and Bella for all their help on this camp.
