VCE Study Skills & GAT
Welcome back for Term 2, this term is
always very busy especially for VCE
students who have to prepare for the
changeover of Units prior to the end
of term. This is the first year of the
current format of the VCE where there
are no mid -year exams for Unit 3
students. Our Team Leaders have
been working very hard to keep
students focussed on revision and
study habits as part of the Study Skills
sessions. Students are reminded that
attendance at these sessions is not
only compulsory but purposeful.
Much planning goes into this program
and we expect all students to not only
attend, but to apply the advice and
new knowledge gained. Please do not
hesitate to contact the Team Leaders
for more information.
Also this term, Year 12 VCE students
will be required to sit the General
Achievement Test (GAT). Our
Campus Leaders have placed a
detailed description of the
requirements and use of the GAT in
this newsletter. All students studying a
Year 12 VCE subject have been given
a copy of the 2013 Exams Navigator
student information publication
produced by the Victorian Curriculum
& Assessment Authority (VCAA).
This booklet contains all of the
necessary information regarding
examination guidelines and rules. We
would like to draw particular attention
to the page where the rules on mobile
phones and other electronic devices
are contained. We encourage all
students and their families to read and
re read this section. These rules are
enforced by the Exam Supervisors and
the consequences for any breaches can
be very serious. Any student who has
misplaced their booklet must see Ms.
Aleardi or Ms. Ryan immediately to
collect a replacement copy. Any
details regarding exams can also be
accessed from the VCAA site at
www.vcaa.vic.edu.au
VCAL Update
Year 11 and 12 VCAL students have been
working diligently towards completing
their outcomes for Term 2. All VCAL
students have copies of their Learning
Matrices that detail tasks that need to be
completed to attain competency in each of
the VCAL domains. Articles on the
interesting projects that VCAL students
have been working on will be in our next
newsletter.
VCE Debating
Congratulations to both the Year 11 and
Year 12 teams for a very successful start to
2013. In Round 1 the Year 12 team of
Harleen Kaur, Jascha Catacutan, Mehak
Sheik and Aimee –Lee Hill successfully
argued that ‘Greece should leave the Eurozone’
against Overnewton College. The
Year 11 team of Celine Tang, Matthew
Humphrey-Chapman and Jenny Pham –Vo
were also successful in arguing that
‘Youth wages should be equal to Adults’.
In Round 2 the Year 12 team of Renahi
Zengin, Beray Uzunbay and Mustafa
Kacmazer were able to defeat St Columba’s
College on the topic ‘That prescription
should be advertised’. The Year 11
Team of Felicia Chen, Dianna Duong and
Matthew Humphrey-Chapman were also
successful in defeating Overnewton College
arguing that ‘Feminism is still necessary
in today’s society.
Highlights included Beray being awarded
Best Speaker and the Year 11 team win-
ning by a huge margin in round two.
Remarkably for the Year 12 students it
was their first ever debates!
Special thanks to Ms Pham for all her
help and support.
Mr McDonald
On Wednesday the 17th of April an
assembly was held at the Delahey campus
gymnasium to celebrate our successes.
During this assembly the 2013 college
captains; Dylan D’roza and Amy Lai, were
officially introduced, an encouraging
student address was given by former
Copperfield student and current medical
student Stephanie Tedesco and this year’s
SRC executives ; Zeel Patel, Nongluck
Siharath, Mehak Sheikh, Julie Nguyen and
Daniela Ly, were presented.
The assembly was also used to honour this
year’s Western Chances Scholarship
recipients, as well as congratulate the high
achievers of the current year who managed
to get a study score over 40 in year 12
subjects. Various other highlights were
given appropriate mention and students
were given the chance to enjoy some
musical performances from the college’s
music class’s talented students. Hopefully it
was an enjoyable experience for everyone
and here’s hoping that the continuing year
will be just as successful as the last!
Western Alcohol Reduction Programme W.A.R.P
I had the pleasure of being invited to attend
the media launch of this exciting program
on 18th March at Western Centre for
Health Research & Education (WCHRE),
Sunshine Hospital by SSN Michael
Malady. WARP is an exciting initiative of
the South Western Victoria SSN Program,
Western Health Sunshine Hospital and
School Focus Youth Service – McKillop
Family Services, to address the issues of
alcohol and youth in the South Western
Victorian Region. It brings together other
organisations and partners; such as Victoria
Police and Life Choices – Brenton Alford
and Deakin University. WARP was
developed to address the issues of alcohol
and risk taking behaviour of young people
in the Melbourne western metropolitan
region and consists of six programs for a
class of twenty five students from schools
in the western region. The program is being
evaluated by Deakin University, and it is
envisaged that it will be able to be used to
provide a teaching and learning program
for schools, hospitals and Victoria Police
that can be delivered to all school
communities in Victoria using the
community partnerships of DEECD,
Department of Health and Victoria Police.
For more information about this program
please contact Michael Malady—SSN
based in the Footscray Office. Email:
Melbourne Zoo
On Friday 26th April, the year
11 Biology students visited
the Melbourne Zoo to observe
animals and to learn about the
various ways of reproduction.
As part of the activity
conducted by Zoo keepers, we
learned about the reproduction
of Snakes and Frogs. We were
able to hold the snake and
frog.
Thanks to Ms Reeves and Ms
Starke for organising this
excursion.
Work Ready Programme
Exciting Employment Skill development
program for Senior VCAL students.
This term 17 Senior VCAL students are
undertaking The Work-Life-Ready
Program .This project is delivered by
Careers Fast Track and is fully funded by
the Brimbank LLEN –
Student Outcomes
This program has been designed to help
each student to achieve:
* increased confidence and selfawareness
* improvements in learn-ability and
employ-ability skills
* the ability to identify suitable job
opportunities
* the ability to write a targeted
resume and job application
* improvements in their confidence
to interview effectively
* overall job-readiness and
confidence in their future
So far students have undertake an online
Careers assessment that has highlighted
their personal skills and strengths and
identified areas requiring further
development. Students have used these
profiles to set goals for further skills
development. Each student has also had
an individual interview to investigate
pathway options and has developed an
Individual Pathway Action Plan
outlining what they need to this year
to move into Employment or further
study in 2014.
Over the next few weeks students will
undertake workshops on resume
writing and interview skills. Student
feedback so far is very positive.
“This program has helped me learn a
lot about myself”.
“It’s really helping me get ready for
next year”
Senior Girls
Tennis
On Monday the 29 th April,
Georgiana Ruhrig, Monika Rajicic,
Naomi Singhebhye and Simona
ventured to Geelong to compete in
the Senior girls Western metro
region for tennis. They were up
against some tough components
facing Maribyrnong College and
Essendon Keilor . Overall, the girls
played some great tennis and came
second in their pool. Unfortunately
they did not go through to the next
round but still it was an excellent
effort. A big thanks to the girls, they
were outstanding competitors and a
special mention to Simona for filling
in last minute!
Woolworths
Earn & Learn
The Woolworths Earn & Learn
program is back on now, and
we are participating in the program
once again.
When you shop at Woolworths,
ask them for your stickers
when you spend over $10.
Bring them in to the school and
put them in the green box in
the office. If you put your
name with them, you could win
movie tickets.
Last year we collected 10,000
stickers, let’ s see if we can
beat it this year. This is what
we purchased with our stickers
last year.
Senior Boys Soccer
On Monday the 22 nd April our senior
boys soccer team travelled to Kelior
park for the senior boys outdoor
competition.
Copperfield College senior boys
played exceptionally well and dominated
both games. They drew their
first game with KDC 0-0 and lost the
second to VU0-1 with and unlucky
goal. The scores are not a true indication
of our skilled soccer players as
they had possession of the ball 70-
80% of the time in both games.
Good effort and well done team.
Student Accident
Insurance
Parents / Carers are reminded
that the Department does not
provide personal accident
insurance for students. Parents
and guardians are responsible for
Copperfield Students Look after Chicken Eggs
Over the past few weeks Copperfield’s biology students were able to witness the hatching of chickens from eggs to
fluffy chicks. We received ten small fertile eggs from a local farm which students were able to watch and look after
while they hatched. When we received the eggs we were told that they would hatch between two-three days. A few
days later we could all hear little chirping sounds coming from inside the eggs, indicating that all the chicks were
alive and healthy. A day after they hatched we placed all the little chicks into their new brooder, which would be
their new home for the next seven-eight days. Whilst living in the brooder, each day it was clearly seen that there
was a rapid growth from chicks being small and fluffy to big and strong.
On a daily basis Copperfield students would come and visit the chicks in order to see their progress and development
since their hatching. Though we were not allowed to hold the chicks straight away students shared enough emotion
by watching how the chicks communicated with one another, ate, drank, and kept warm.
By day five we were finally allowed to hold all the chicks by carefully lifting them up and placing them in between
our hands to keep them warm, by using our other hand to cover them softly without crushing them. By doing so they
felt comfortable enough to gently fall asleep in our hands, which was really special and a new bonding experience.
Over all it was an amazing experience to witness the hatching of chicks as well as viewing them from day one to day
twelve. It is definitely an experience we will never forget.
Some of the names which were given to the chickens were:
Tubby, Fluff ball, Isaac, Sleepy, Snow, Mira, Steven, Rosy, Pecky, Jobey
