Copperfield Students Look after Chicken Eggs
Over the past few weeks Copperfield’s biology students were able to witness the hatching of chickens from eggs to
fluffy chicks. We received ten small fertile eggs from a local farm which students were able to watch and look after
while they hatched. When we received the eggs we were told that they would hatch between two-three days. A few
days later we could all hear little chirping sounds coming from inside the eggs, indicating that all the chicks were
alive and healthy. A day after they hatched we placed all the little chicks into their new brooder, which would be
their new home for the next seven-eight days. Whilst living in the brooder, each day it was clearly seen that there
was a rapid growth from chicks being small and fluffy to big and strong.
On a daily basis Copperfield students would come and visit the chicks in order to see their progress and development
since their hatching. Though we were not allowed to hold the chicks straight away students shared enough emotion
by watching how the chicks communicated with one another, ate, drank, and kept warm.
By day five we were finally allowed to hold all the chicks by carefully lifting them up and placing them in between
our hands to keep them warm, by using our other hand to cover them softly without crushing them. By doing so they
felt comfortable enough to gently fall asleep in our hands, which was really special and a new bonding experience.
Over all it was an amazing experience to witness the hatching of chicks as well as viewing them from day one to day
twelve. It is definitely an experience we will never forget.
Some of the names which were given to the chickens were:
Tubby, Fluff ball, Isaac, Sleepy, Snow, Mira, Steven, Rosy, Pecky, Jobey
