I s s u e N o . 2 P a g e 2 VCE Debating Congratulations to both the Year 11 and Year 12 teams for a very successful start to 2013. In Round 1 the Year 12 team of Harleen Kaur, Jascha Catacutan, Mehak Sheik and Aimee –Lee Hill successfully argued that ‘Greece should leave the Eurozone’ against Overnewton College. The Year 11 team of Celine Tang, Matthew Humphrey-Chapman and Jenny Pham –Vo were also successful in arguing that ‘Youth wages should be equal to Adults’. In Round 2 the Year 12 team of Renahi Zengin, Beray Uzunbay and Mustafa Kacmazer were able to defeat St Columba’s College on the topic ‘That prescription should be advertised’. The Year 11 Team of Felicia Chen, Dianna Duong and Matthew Humphrey-Chapman were also successful in defeating Overnewton College arguing that ‘Feminism is still necessary in today’s society. Highlights included Beray being awarded Best Speaker and the Year 11 team win- ning by a huge margin in round two. Remarkably for the Year 12 students it was their first ever debates! Special thanks to Ms Pham for all her help and support. Mr McDonald On Wednesday the 17th of April an assembly was held at the Delahey campus gymnasium to celebrate our successes. During this assembly the 2013 college captains; Dylan D’roza and Amy Lai, were officially introduced, an encouraging student address was given by former Copperfield student and current medical student Stephanie Tedesco and this year’s SRC executives ; Zeel Patel, Nongluck Siharath, Mehak Sheikh, Julie Nguyen and Daniela Ly, were presented. The assembly was also used to honour this year’s Western Chances Scholarship recipients, as well as congratulate the high achievers of the current year who managed to get a study score over 40 in year 12 subjects. Various other highlights were given appropriate mention and students were given the chance to enjoy some musical performances from the college’s music class’s talented students. Hopefully it was an enjoyable experience for everyone and here’s hoping that the continuing year will be just as successful as the last! Campus Assembly
I s s u e N o . 2 P a g e 3 Western Alcohol Reduction Programme W.A.R.P I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the media launch of this exciting program on 18th March at Western Centre for Health Research & Education (WCHRE), Sunshine Hospital by SSN Michael Malady. WARP is an exciting initiative of the South Western Victoria SSN Program, Western Health Sunshine Hospital and School Focus Youth Service – McKillop Family Services, to address the issues of alcohol and youth in the South Western Victorian Region. It brings together other organisations and partners; such as Victoria Police and Life Choices – Brenton Alford and Deakin University. WARP was developed to address the issues of alcohol and risk taking behaviour of young people in the Melbourne western metropolitan region and consists of six programs for a class of twenty five students from schools in the western region. The program is being evaluated by Deakin University, and it is envisaged that it will be able to be used to provide a teaching and learning program for schools, hospitals and Victoria Police that can be delivered to all school communities in Victoria using the community partnerships of DEECD, Department of Health and Victoria Police. Email: malady.michael.m@edumail.vic.gov.au Melbourne Zoo On Friday 26th April, the year 11 Biology students visited the Melbourne Zoo to observe animals and to learn about the various ways of reproduction. As part of the activity conducted by Zoo keepers, we learned about the reproduction of Snakes and Frogs. We were able to hold the snake and frog. Thanks to Ms Reeves and Ms Starke for organising this excursion. (Hionia Andis (1P3) and Mandeep Kaur (1G5) Work Ready Programme Exciting Employment Skill development program for Senior VCAL students. This term 17 Senior VCAL students are undertaking The Work-Life-Ready Program .This project is delivered by Careers Fast Track and is fully funded by the Brimbank LLEN – Student Outcomes This program has been designed to help each student to achieve: * increased confidence and selfawareness * improvements in learn-ability and employ-ability skills * the ability to identify suitable job opportunities * the ability to write a targeted resume and job application * improvements in their confidence to interview effectively * overall job-readiness and confidence in their future So far students have undertake an online Careers assessment that has highlighted their personal skills and strengths and identified areas requiring further development. Students have used these profiles to set goals for further skills development. Each student has also had an individual interview to investigate pathway options and has developed an Individual Pathway Action Plan outlining what they need to this year to move into Employment or further study in 2014. Over the next few weeks students will undertake workshops on resume writing and interview skills.
