I s s u e 2 P a g e 4 B & K Team News Term Two is well and truly underway, and teachers are very pleased to see students in all classes taking their studies seriously. All Year 9 & 10s are expected to make the most of the learning opportunities presented, and to ensure that all class and homework tasks are completed. This will provide students with the best preparation when they begin to study for their Semester Exams. The Year 10 Exams will be held from June 4 th -11 th , and Year 9 exams are scheduled for June 7 th -13 th . As the weather begins to cool down, students are reminded that they must wear official Copperfield College uniform items at all times. The College sports rugby top is not a substitute for the red jumper, and is only allowed to be worn during PE classes. No other jumpers, jackets, hoodies or coloured scarves are permitted, nor are beanies. Students are able to wear the navy College scarf. All uniform items are available for purchase from our supplier PSW. Year 9 students will be sitting their NAPLAN tests on May 14-16 th , and are reminded to equip themselves with 2B/HB pencils, an eraser, pencil sharpener and a working calculator. Teachers will not be able to provide these items. Year 10 students have begun a series of career lessons with Jenny Zahra, which will culminate in a Year 10 Career Day at our Delahey Campus on June 12 th . Students are also being given the opportunity to participate in work experience in the last week of term two. Any student who thinks they would be interested, should meet with Jenny asap. Mr Burt & Mrs Ilardi K & B Team Leaders Challenge Day Subject– Semester One Update With City tours, projects and scavenger hunts done and dusted with in Term 1: 91K, 92K and 91B have recently completed their Level One First Aid Course. Last week, students participated in a wheelchair basketball incursion taken by Garry Connor from WheelTalk Australia and also attended a lecture by Paralympic guest speakers Leanne DelToso and Shelly Chaplin. Excursions coming up include our day visit to the Lady Northcote YMCA Recreation Camp, which provides students with the opportunity get out of their comfort zone and participate in activities such as a high ropes course, leap of faith, giant swing and mountain biking. Students will also visit the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) where they will learn to dive and pin drop off the diving boards and platforms from qualified Diving Victoria Staff. All students involved in this program need to ensure that they have paid their $175.00 Challenge Day fee to be eligible to participate in the upcoming excursions. A reminder also goes out to classes 93K, 92B and 93B that they can also begin to pay this fee (if they have not already done so) in preparation for when they pick the subject up in semester two. Any questions or concerns about Challenge Day can be directed to Ms Parfett - Challenge Day Coordinator. Copperfield College Uniform The Copperfield College uniform is available from the PSW Deer Park store: 58 Westwood Drive, Deer Park Ph: 9363 8458 Monday to Friday: 8.30am -5.00pm Saturday: 9.00am - 5.00pm Uniform items can also be purchased online. Orders can be delivered to your home! www.psw.com.au Beanies A reminder to students that beanies are not permitted. They may be confiscated even if worn in the yard.
I s s u e 2 P a g e 5 Wellbeing Programs Year 10 Wellbeing Day In March Year 10 students welcomed 22 presenters from 10 community and professional organisations for an actionpacked day of social-emotional education. Issues such as alcohol, relationships, violence, relaxation and healthy eating were presented by experts in each field and enthusiastically explored by our students. We thank speakers from the Family Planning Clinic, Step Back Think, Life Choices Incorporated, ISIS, Brimbank Youth Services, Explore Counselling services and Department of Justice. A free BBQ lunch and performance by the much-loved local band, Masketta Fall, along with some interesting take-home bags, rewarded participants for their efforts during this busy and demanding day. We would like to acknowledge the following organisations for bag donations: Officeworks, McDonalds, State Emergency Service and National Foods. Drumbeat Year 8 Boys' Program Travis, from Brimbank Youth Services, is leading 10 Year 8 boys (especially selected for their determination) to get involved in an exciting program that uses the djembe (bongo) drums as a tool for exploring and expressing social-emotional issues. Kellie and the boys have just started this seven week program which promises to be a lot of fun as well as a great challenge. Friends for Youth Year 9 Program Kat, from Brimbank Youth Services, and Kellie are co-facilitating this challenging social-emotional program for self-selected Year 9 students keen to learn new skills to increase confidence and improve coping strategies. It is also proving to be enjoyable and challenging and the hot chocolates and music add to the appeal. The program runs until the end of the term. Sydenham Campus Bullying Survey Each year, across each of the three campuses students participate in an online survey as another opportunity to express any concerns about bullying in an anonymous and confidential manner. Results for Sydenham campus reinforce our school as a safe place to be, but also brings to the attention of staff and students where further work and support is needed. Year 7 students were further challenged on the subject of verbal bullying when a performance group visited and presented "Verbal Combat" last week. City of Melton Individual Sport Grants Congratulations to Blake Bower and Billie- Dane Brigham, both of year 7, for their successful nomination and application for Individual Sport Grants. Both Blake and Billie-Dane are worthy recipients and we thank the City of Melton for this opportunity. Weekly Activities: Breakfast Club A reminder that students are welcome to join in the happy environment and delicious breakfast created by foods teacher, Cheryl Desailly, at Breakfast Club each Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Particularly as the weather gets colder, Cheryl is much appreciated for providing such a warm and welcoming start to the day. Breakfast is served between 8.00am and 8.45am Tuesday and Wednesday. Sydenham Campus Chess Challenge 32 students have taken on the challenge and entered our annual chess tournament. Each Tuesday lunchtime competitors gather in the library for eagerly anticipated matches involving girls and boys from each year level. Certainly last week's feature was the big play-off between the two brothers so evenly matched in skill and determination, with the win narrowly going to the older sibling. We look forward to more great matches and congratulate all entrants for having a go. Maths Tutoring Ms Keating, Maths coordinator and teacher, is available in C6 every Tuesday lunchtime to help support students needing to learn or revise anything mathematical. This particularly suits young people needing to reinforce their maths skills. Sydenham Games Club There is nothing better on a Friday lunchtime than being warmly greeted by the smiling faces of Charlene and Paulina from Elevate in the library. Students are welcome to come alone or bring a friend as there is always a quiet game such as Connect 4 or something more raucous such as Billionaire to join in with.
