PRE APPRENTICESHIP AND OTHER TAFE COURSES If you are interested in an apprenticeship apply for a pre-apprentice course while you look for a job. These programs run for 3 to 6 months, depending on the program. Apply directly to TAFE’s - VU, Kangan, RMIT,& NMIT for these programs. Many courses have long waiting lists so apply as soon as possible and to improve your options you can apply to more than one TAFE. I s s u e N o . 6 P a g e 9 Women in Workplace Leadership Workshop 2012 The globally known brand ‘Optus’, believes in giving back to the community as much as it can, and that is exactly what it did when it hosted the ‘Women in Workplace Leadership Workshop 2012’ on 24th October 2012. This was the second year that girls from our Delahey Campus were invited to this knowledgeable and fun workshop that was coordinated by 6 talented mentors, who were also employees of optus. The girls that rode the bus to the Optus building, located at the heart of Melbourne CBD were, Jessica Siljanovski (1G3), Izel Shevki (1G2), Lauren Sahakian (1G3), Edlin Segran (1G3), Mehak Sheikh (1G4), Andrea Hajenian (1G4), Dareen Flifel (1G4), Haylea Whiteman (1Y1), Amanda Ngo (1Y3), Stefani Risteska (1Y3), Sally Truong (1Y3), Madison Jackson (1Y4), Beray Uzunbay (1Y4), Zeel Patel (1P3) and Francesca Rizzo (1P3), accompanied by Ms. Chiodo (campus principal) and Ms O’shea (careers counsellor). At the workshops, we were enlightened with information about Leadership skills, spoke about different individuals that we believe are leaders, shared our own thoughts on various topics and improved any qualities we thought were weak with the help of the mentors. The workshop was divided into 3 sessions and we all got the chance to converse with each other and all the mentors by the end of the day. Further along the day, we explored different aspects of leadership and team work. During the day, we were also offered with a delicious, healthy meal & fruit snack, followed by a small talk by one of the recruiting agents at Optus and finally a few ‘thank you’ speeches. It is certain that the girls and myself, gained a lot from this experience and were completely honoured to be chosen to attend it. We are very thankful to Optus for their outstanding service to the community and to ABCN (Australian Business and Community Network) for their support. Hopefully we will employ them into our everyday life as well as pass on the details to fellow students. Mehak Sheikh (1G4) Community Project As part of my Personal development community service project, in term two I was running production shows at Kings Park. I was a part of the backstage crew. My duty was to manage a group of students and I had to instruct them in what they were to do when a scene change occurred. Some of the props included: lockers, beds, background scenery and a blackboard. We had to lift and quickly organise the props in ten seconds! We had to wear black so the audience couldn’t see us. The three managers that I worked with were Ms Dedes, Ms Jensen and Faalata. All together I worked many hours in preparation for the shows and in total the school put on 8 shows. I enjoyed working on production because it gave me something to look forward to and meeting and managing new people. I would like to thank Ms.Alessio, Ms. Dedes and Ms.Jensen for their help and support. Tommii Phan 1P1 Strengthening of Community Partnership with Sunshine Hospital All Senior VCAL Personal Development Stand (PDS) students are required to undertake a community project as a major part of their senior outcomes. This year, students participated in a project at Sunshine Hospital. The project involved working with staff in the Hospital’s Gem Garden. Jo Spence, Team Leader, Community Engagement & Volunteers-Western Health, was so impressed with the students and their work that she wanted to extend the scope of the new partnership. During this term, Jo met with staff from the Delahey Campus to propose some challenging, yet exciting initiatives for students to develop into senior community partnerships for 2013.
