Model Lesson Ten – Theatre & Puppetry Arts: Performing and Reflecting on Your Shadow Play
Grades 2 – 5
Materials: Found Poems, Shadow puppets, Shadow Puppet Screens and stands, light source for shadow screens and extension cords, control rods, masking tape, sound effects instruments and
handmade items (optional), tag board; Teacher & Student Assessment Portfolios.
Enduring Understanding: As we explore our connection to Nature and to other people, we can gain understanding of our shared values and universal human heritage.
Essential Questions Related to Lesson and Unit: What new understanding of the anchor work poem did you get from doing the Shadow Play?
Big Idea for Lesson: A performance is a combination of everything we’ve learned and created so far.

Lesson Ten Outcomes Creative Task & Criteria Assessment Strategies
Students will be able to:
Produce a shadow play, using text, puppet movement
and sound.
(AP, CE, HCC, AV, CRA)
Demonstrate through writing, discussing, and
performance that they have learned the content of the
lesson.
Teacher will:
Teach the lesson effectively.
Assess student learning outcomes.
Document, collect and label the evidence of student
learning from this lesson.
Lead a reflection/assessment with the class related to
learning outcomes from the unit.

CREATE & PERFORM – Becoming an Expert
Task: Students perform a small group Shadow Play.
Criteria
Performance must demonstrate:
Use of six puppet manipulation techniques
o Puppet visibility;
o Unique entrance & dramatic exit;
o Movement to convey action and emotion;
o Use of screen space;
o Varied speed of movement;
o Coordination of music/sound with puppet
―Giving & taking‖ of focus in Choral &Solo Reading.
Use of syllable accentuation for expressive reading of
Found Poem script.
Clear articulation of words when speaking
Use of sound effects to complement and accentuate
puppet movement.

Teacher:
After discussing the anchor work, notes if the students
have a better understanding of poetry.
Notes how all or selected students progressed in their
vocal delivery.
Notes how the class has progressed in their teamwork
efforts since Model Lesson One.
Uses video to document the creative task.
Labels video or photos with appropriate task and/or
outcomes.
Uses rubric for Model Lesson Ten at the end of the
lesson to assess student learning outcomes.

Describe how your team worked together when you
created your performance.
Write what you would do differently if you were to do
another Shadow Play.
Write what you learned about poetry.
