General manager of Pacific Western Wood Works Ltd. Dennis Wight. Pictured is a sample of PWWW’s 5/4x6 CLR VG Decking. All products at PWWW are now FSC and PEFC certified.
Delta, B.C.—Pacific Western Wood
Works Ltd., based here, is a familyowned
and operated company that provides
quality products and innovative
solutions for the Western Red Cedar
industry. The company has recently introduced
a full line of clear finish A and
Better Clear and Clear VG Cedar in 1x4
to 1x12, 5/4x4 to 5/4x12 and 2x4 to 2x12
in S4S and S1S2E.
“This program is something that we do
exceptionally well and are able to compete
with the best in the world,” said
General Manager Dennis Wight. “We’re
excited to have found a need for a new
quality product in the marketplace.”
Currently marketing the new product
heavily into the Northeast as well as the
Pacific Northwest and the Midwest
regions, Wight said the company plans to
expand into other markets as they learn
the specific markets that have requirements
for the product.
Pacific Western Wood Works also
recently announced the company is now
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified
and has obtained chain-of-custody
certification with the Programme for the
Endorsement of Forest Certification
(PEFC).
As for the range of products offered by
Pacific Western Wood Works, Wight said,
“A lot of people would be surprised at the
range of product lines that our family
business actually does and has done for
a number of years. We have successfully
exported to Japan and Germany for
years, which are some of the toughest
quality requiring markets in the world.”
Variations of the new product line also
go offshore, shipping into the European
market.
Established in 1985 by Ian Wight, the
company got off the ground by producing
latticework to supply local lumberyards.
In 1987, Pacific Western Wood Works
moved from its original location to a larger
premises, where they added a resaw
and a lath and began producing their own
raw materials.
By 1990, a larger warehouse was purchased
for the addition of another lath
saw and a waste disposal system that
would greatly reduce the company’s
operating expense. Then in June of 2001
the Wight’s installed a moulder facility—
an investment that would allow the Delta
company to acquire rough lumber from
primary sawmills and produce finished
products. Until then Pacific Western had
purchased materials that were then
remanufactured finished wood products.
The employees of the new facility were
just ‘getting-their-feet-wet’ on the sevenmonth-old
machinery and process when
an electrical fire burned the new moulder
facility to the ground.
When the decision to rebuild was made,
general manager Dennis Wight and his
family began “running an insurance claim
instead of a business.” The next two
years would be spent rebuilding the facility
as the Wight’s signed off on their insurance
claim for the extensive fire damage.
Throughout the several months of
downtime, the firm focused on maintaining
its existing client base by custom cutting
wood with other provincial remanufacturers.
While the customers were
loyal, the Wights knew they weren’t in a
position to pursue new business.
In January of 2003 the newly rebuilt
moulder facility began operating. Pacific
Western Wood Works grew by more than
20,000 square feet to a total of 40,000
square feet of dry manufacturing space
where the company also produces pattern
profiles.
A Weinig Hydromat 23E8 head moulder
that is supported by a Rondamat 960
grinder are utilized in Pacific Western’s
custom profiling process. The company
produces its own steel templates and
then begins grinding raw knife steel to the
finished profile. The company’s custom
profiling capabilities are:
•NLGA/WP patterns
•Bevel siding
•Tongue & Groove
•Channel Siding
•End mitre or beveling
•Precision end trimming
•Custom designed profiles
With over 10 years experience
in exporting to the
U.K., Japan, Germany,
Spain, Korea and China, the
company ships their product
by rail and container as well
as intermodel vans. Utilizing
a state-of-the-art tally tag system, Pacific
Western can identify and track each load
throughout the shipping process and also
for inventory purposes.
The team at Pacific Western Wood
Works takes pride in their work and monitors
each product throughout the manufacturing
process. While large enough to
handle sizeable orders the firm is versatile
enough to handle small orders as
well.
SWANSON GROUP INC. - Building a World Class Forest Products Company
(L to R) Frank Peterson and Heath Grafton particpate in a planning session
at Swanson Group Sales.
Glendale, Ore.–As a private, familyowned
business the Swanson’s have
always viewed the industry from a long
term perspective; which is best illustrated
by the fact that they were one of the
first sawmills in Oregon to convert their
mill from the traditional large old growth
Doug Fir logs to utilize the small second
growth logs that were becoming more
available in the late 60s. The company
mission statement reads in part “Our
core purpose is to create opportunities
and long-term security for our employees,
shareholders, and respective families”;
a huge task given the economic climate
of the last three years.
Earlier this year Swanson Group
attained certification from SFI
(Sustainable Forestry Initiative) for fiber
sourcing and all finished products are
now identified with the SFI logo and is
also being incorporated on all packaging
and product literature. The fiber sourcing
certification indicates that the procurement
system at Swanson Group
insures that the fiber supplied to the
company’s manufacturing facilities in
Oregon meets the SFI standard. The
SFI certification also indicates that
Swanson Group practices and promotes
the use of Best Management Practices in
harvesting operations to protect the raw
material supply, water quality, air quality,
Small groups are meeting at Swanson Group Sales to discuss how best
to meet the needs of the customer.
soil, wildlife habitat and other important
resources our forest provide.
Participation in SFI and the use of the
SFI label offers assurance to Swanson
Groups’ customers that the products
they purchase are produced from raw
materials harvested using sustainable
forest practices.
Swanson Group Sales Co. is the sales
agent for the Swanson Group family of
mills located in Oregon. Those operations
include two green Doug Fir dimension
mills, a stud mill that produces kiln
dried White Fir, Hem Fir and Doug Fir
studs and two plywood mills. The stud
and dimension mills are members of the
Western Wood Products Assoc. (WWPA)
and the plywood mills are members of
APA – The Engineered Wood Products
Association (APA). Swanson Group
Sales also provides products not manufactured
by the parent company in order
to provide their customers with complete
and total buying satisfaction.
When Swanson Group Inc. developed
their Mission, Vision, and Values statement
a few years ago they started out
with a simple but ambitious vision to
build a world class forest products company;
one that is in control of its destiny
and brings out the best in its employees.
A worthy goal to be sure and the accompanying
tenets listed to achieve that goal
served to underscore the seriousness of
the commitment the company made to
meet their vision.
The downturn in housing starts and the
subsequent drop in wood prices over the
last three years presented a significant
challenge to the company but Swanson
Group has been able to stay the course
and move forward with their stated mission
and vision for their future. An article
on the company’s Springfield plywood
mill in the Softwood Buyer’s July/August
2009 issue illustrates Swanson’s commitment
to invest in the capital improvements
necessary to build a world class
operation despite the difficult economic
times we’re experiencing.
While reinvesting in operations to
upgrade systems and creating more efficient
and productive units are more visible
to the outside world, the company is
equally committed to building a top performing
sales division that has a mandate
to provide exceptional customer
service. Working in small groups to
determine those key factors that drive
success in business, the sales team
(Swanson Group Sales) is developing
benchmark models that will ensure that
the customer’s needs are being met. As
Emeril would say “We’re kicking it up a
notch,” by challenging conventional
thinking to create a sales organization
that is the supplier of choice to our customers.
Order accuracy, on time ship-
Brent Hayes leads a discussion group to determine key success factors.
ments, response time to accounts and
problem resolution are all areas that can
and will be measured to determine how
the sales group stands up to the competition.
Customers today require much more
than simply a low price to remain competitive.
Today’s business environment
demands total management of the supply
chain and being able to identify and
meet those demands and needs from the
marketplace is the aim of Swanson
Group Sales.
Construction of a world-class organization
needs a solid foundation to build
upon and those anchors are found in the
core values embedded in the company’s
Mission, Vision and Values statement.
Accountability, Commitment, Excellence,
and Safety are the values that define
Swanson Group. As an acronym these
values form our four ACES and will be
consistently demonstrated in the way we
conduct our operations and interact with
one another.
WESTERVELT LUMBER Offers Quality, Certified SYP Products
An aerial view of Westervelt’s state-of-the-art facility.
Tuscaloosa, Ala.—A division of the
Westervelt Company, Westervelt
Lumber, (formerly, Gulf States Paper
Corporation) offers Sustainable Forestry
Initiative (SFI) certified timbers, dimension,
boards, patterns, moulding and
poles from its production complex in
Moundville, Ala.
More than 100 years ago Herbert
Westervelt established Prairie States
Paper Corporation, which is now known
as the Westervelt Company. Herbert
Westervelt’s motto, “Quality Counts,”
has been carried on and can be attributed
to a large part of the company’s
continued success.
The Westervelt Company and all its
divisions are committed to the environment.
Not only do they have specific
operations dedicated to maintaining their
500,000 acres, Westervelt Lumber Co. is
also Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)
chain-of-custody certified.
Marketing predominately to suppliers of
the home building industry, Westervelt
produces dimension lumber in 2”x4”-
2”x12”, No. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Pattern stock is
available in 8’-16’ lengths in standard
match, center match, center match Vjoint
(122 & 116), beaded ceiling, and
(L to R front row) Clint York, Patty Cook, Todd Nodine, (back row) Mark
Richardson and Chad Hammonds.
105 siding in 1”x4”-2”x8”, C and Better, D
and No. 2. Green poles are also offered
in a multitude of sizes and lengths.
Westervelt Lumber Company’s timber
mill produces Nos. 1 and 2 and 3/4 mix,
4”x4”-6”x6”, Southern Yellow Pine small
timbers. The mill facility operates on
three separate shifts and utilizes precision
scanning equipment to determine
the best cut for each log.
The firm also offers 5/4”x6” radius
edged decking in premium, basic and
standard grades. “We have a broad
product mix that allows us to meet a lot
of needs,” Richardson explained. “A lot
of customers today need mixed truckloads
with different items and we can
handle those special requests.”
Customer service and quality oriented,
shipping by rail or by truck, Westervelt
delivers its products efficiently. “From a
logistics standpoint we can handle the
freight to fit our customers needs, we are
essentially a one-stop-shop for Southern
Yellow Pine lumber products,”
Richardson said.
Richardson elaborated on a specific
customer need in which Westervelt
Lumber Co. was able to provide the flexibility
and production schedule the client
needed on short notice. “A customer of
ours in south Florida was working with a
contractor and they had some tight
deadlines and needed pattern stock.
This was upper scale high-end work,” he
said. “We changed our production
schedule and offered the flexibility to
manufacture the product he needed. We
worked overtime and got the product
from a rough, dry status to a finished
product, shipped to his door within three
days. So consequently our client’s contractor
was able to finish the job and we
built a strong relationship.”
“Whether it’s a customer that has a
truck sitting at the mill and calls to say he
needs to drop two packs of 2x4 off at a
different location or add two packs of 4x4
and 4x6—we do that on a daily basis,”
Richardson continued. “For a mill of our
size we are very flexible.” Westervelt
Lumber Co. has the capacity to produce
200 million board feet.
Westervelt Lumber is one of seven divisions
under the Westervelt umbrella that
includes: Westervelt Ecological
Services, an environmental mitigation
and habitat planning service provider;
Westervelt Wildlife, a company that manages
the wildlife of 500,000 acres of tim-
Packaging options on pattern stock include plastic wrapped “mini bundles”
as well as full pack wrap.
berland and natural resources;
Westervelt Natural Resources, the land
base of timberlands across the 500,000
acres; Westervelt Lodges, a network of
sporting lodges; Lanworth, a company
that uses satellite imagery to market a
broad range of data analytics and mapping
products to different sectors, such
as agriculture, forestry, real estate, and
utilities; and The North River Yacht Club.
Westervelt Lumber Co. is a member of
the North American Wholesale Lumber
Assoc. (NAWLA), the Southern Forest
Products Assoc. (SFPA) and the
American Forest & Paper Assoc.
(AF&PA).
MILL SERVICES: Upgrades Continue to Ensure Top Quality Finger Joint Products
Dan Holt (left) and Jamie Place have been upgrading equipment and operations
at Mill Services since they bought the company in 2007.
Cobleskill, N.Y. – When Dan Holt and
Jamie Place bought Mill Services Inc. in
2007, they set out to manufacture the highest
quality, most environmentally friendly
finger joint boards on the market. In just
two years, they have systematically implemented
improvements and upgraded
equipment throughout the company’s
entire manufacturing line, from start to finish.
“We have continued our investments in
facilities and equipment to increased efficiency,
improve utilization of our natural
resources and make the most durable
product possible,” explains Holt.
Since 2007, Mill Services has added a
Luxscan Scanner and the Weinig 450
OptiCut optimizing system to increase
accuracy, quality and yields from wood
fiber. The company has also increased efficiency
by adding conveyors and streamlined
material handling processes. Most
recently, Holt and Place focused on
improvements in the finishing process.
“By Spring 2010, we believe that we will
have perfected our paint system and paints
to the point that we have one of the best
systems in the country,” explains Place.
Mill Services has already invested in a new
convection oven that dries at a lower temperature
for a more uniform finish. Work is
The Painting Supervisor at Mill Services inspects finger joint boards as
they enter the company’s new convection oven. The oven is part of a
total upgrade of the company’s finishing systems and materials.
currently underway on a new sanding system
that will result in the smoothest finish
possible. Meanwhile, Mill Services is working
with Sherwin Williams and FMI to
develop a low VOC paint formulation that
maximizes the durability of the Eastern
White Pine finger joint boards.
Mill Services offers customers a variety of
finishing options. The company uses a flow
coater to apply oil finishes. If a latex finish
is preferred, Mill Services either uses a
vacuum coater and an infrared oven or a
vacuum coater with the lower temperature
convection oven. “We work with customers
to determine the best system and the best
finishes for their needs. Our equipment
enables us to customize finishes for best
results according to each customer’s
unique requirements,” says Place.
Mill Services is constantly researching
glues and primers that deliver the best
results while minimizing impact on the
environment. This emphasis on low VOC
finishes and environmentally safe glues is
just one part of Mill Services’ commitment
to creating an environmentally friendly
product. “If you’re serious about making
an environmentally sensitive product,
you’ve got to look at everything, from the
materials that you use, to your manufacturing
system, to how durable your product is,
to how far you are transporting the product,”
says Holt. “We feel that it is not environmentally
responsible to use lumber
grown half a world away on buildings here.
We use only Eastern White Pine, which we
feel is the appropriate substrate to be used
in the eastern U.S.”
Mill Services uses wood that is grown and
harvested just a short distance from its
manufacturing facility. The finger joint
boards are then manufactured from start to
finish at the company’s Cobleskill, N.Y.
plant. “A major theme in the environmental
movement has been to ‘buy local’, and it
does make sense. Since we buy local lumber,
we’re slashing our emissions because
we don’t need to ship materials from overseas
or even from outside the northeast,”
Place explains.
Holt adds that Eastern White Pine’s natural
resistance to decay means that no
chemicals are needed to enhance durability.
“A lot of imported finger joint boards are
treated to improve their resistance to rot.
The natural tannins in Eastern White Pine
provide natural durability that has been
proven to last. Just look around New
England and you’ll see lots of 200-year-old
buildings, many of which have some of
their original Eastern White Pine trim
boards,” he points out.
Eastern finger joint trim boards, manufactured by Mill Services, were
used extensively on this New England home.
Holt and Place are proud to be manufacturing
a high quality product that is easy on
the environment, but they say that recent
plant upgrades are just a start. “We’ve got
a great product, but there is always room
for improvement. There are always new
technologies or better ways of doing
things. We will always be improving our
processes and our finger joint product,”
says Place.
Established in 1993, Mill Services has
become the largest producer of Eastern
White Pine finger joint boards in the northeastern
United States. The company has
the capacity to manufacture up to 750,000
board feet per month and deliver to customers
all over the U.S. Specializing in
NELMA patterns, the company inventories
about 2 million board feet of product
accessible for edge and center bead, bevel
siding and v match applications, as well as
fascia boards.
THE WALDUN GROUP — Over 35
Years Of Taking The High Road
M a p l e R i d g e , B . C . —Founded, in
1974, by Wynn Walker and currently celebrating
its 35th year in business, The
Waldun
Group is
comprised
of four Red
Cedar divis
i o n s :
Waldun
Forest
Products (a
manufacturer
of
shakes and
shingles);
Stave Lake
Cedar (a
producer of
sidewall
shingles);
Twin River Cedar Products (a dimensional
lumber manufacturer); and Outdoor
Living Today (beautifully crafted garden
structures).
Although starting as a small sawmill, the
company soon moved into producing
roofing materials. The Waldun mill has
become the single
largest producer of
Cedar roofing products
in the industry.
In 1992, the company
began making sidewall
shingles by taking
over the historic Stave
Lake Cedar operation.
Originally built in
1939, the Stave Lake
operation was
enhanced by Waldun
to reach a production
level that has at times
exceeded 1,000 boxes per day.
Curtis Walker and Tom Faris are very
knowledgeable sales representatives
that market the shingle siding and Cedar
roofing products.
In 1994, the company built the Twin
Rivers Cedar Products sawmill. From its
humble beginnings, this company is now
operating 40 hours per week with the
goal of producing 30 million board feet
per year. The sales for this production are
handled by Stewart Clark, Paul Zartman
and Ron Midan.
Four years ago, Outdoor Living Today
was born. Greg Bailey and Ute Faber sell
the garden structures for the company.
The Waldun Group is a member of the
Western Red Cedar Lumber Assoc. and
the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau.
The fact that the Cedar roofing and siding
market has contracted over the last
few years hasn’t stopped The Waldun
Group from
growing.
They have
accomplished
this
by being
consistent
with their
quality of
production
and thus
gaining
existing
market
share, while
at the same
t i m e
expanding
their product lines to open up new markets
to the company.
“We pride ourselves in being able to
adjust to market conditions and in being
a one-stop shop for Cedar products. We
emphasize the best quality and value, not
the lowest price,” Kirk Nagy said. “We
take the high road
when it comes to quality,
and our customers
really appreciate that.”
Heading up the company
with Kirk Nagy
are Wynn Walker and
Alec Clark, company
partners, each of
whom is responsible
for a different part of
the company’s operations.
All company partners
and management have
their sights set on long-term success
rather than short-term gratification. The
owners and many employees are into
their second or third decade with the
company. Their children are now working
throughout the operations. “The company
is run like a family business,” Clark
said.
Going forward The Waldun Group
expects to expand while creating greater
customer and supplier partnerships to
help stoke its growth for another 35
years.
Old Time Values Bring DIPRIZIO
And LaValley Families Together
M i d d l e t o n , N . H . —1938 brought the
most devastating hurricane that the
Northeast has ever seen. New Hampshire,
in particular, was hit
hard. When Charles
DiPrizio and his sons
endeavored with a
portable sawmill to clean
up a forestry nightmare
in southeastern New
Hampshire in 1938, their
industrious pride served
local neighborhoods and
counties throughout the
state. Now it serves lumber
wholesalers
throughout the United
States with DiPrizio
Pine.
From the portable mill
to several lane hand set
sawmills to the family’s
first automatic sawmill in
1968, much has changed for
the DiPrizio company
through the years. DiPrizio
Pine Sales now manufactures
15 million board feet of
Eastern White Pine annually,
and it is now owned and
operated by the LaValley-
Middleton family of companies.
While Charles DiPrizio and
sons were gaining momentum
in their family business,
another visionary leader on
the western side of the state
of New Hampshire, Harold
LaValley, was building a
business in the lumber and
building material industry.
Being a lumberman at heart,
with a fascination for manufacturing,
Harold LaValley
believed there was a better
way to keep costs low for
builders while delivering topquality
goods and services
at lower prices for consumers.
In 1993, he joined
the DiPrizio family on a 15year
mill renewal project,
and at that time, the
DiPrizios sold their business
to the LaValley family. It was
family that built these businesses
and today still, it is
family and like-minded people
that set this company
apart.
The LaValley-DiPrizio combination
is known locally as
LaValley-Middleton Building
Supply, with manufacturing
operations that include the
material wholesale distribution
of Eastern White Pine
boards in unlimited patterns
for flooring, siding, paneling
and trim boards, with numerous finishes
and pre-stained products. LaValley-
Middleton manufacturing also includes: residential
and commercial roof and floor trusses;
prefabricated floor, roof, deck, and wall
panels; pre-hung door units; fabricated
countertops; and even modular systemsbuilt
construction.
Employing over 400 career-minded people
with professional, expert service in areas of
design, purchasing, manufacturing, logistics,
and service representatives, the
LaValley-Middleton family of businesses is
well versed in working with builders, architects,
project supervisors, and buyers at all
levels. The goal is to partner with customers
so they can get everything to do with their
job or project directly from one of the
LaValley-Middleton companies.
With its facilities spread across 40 acres,
DiPrizio operates a planer/moulder and
reman center, nine dry kilns with over
600,000 board feet of capacity per cycle,
and biomass and bi-product processing
plants. The company also has a 600-horsepower
Hurst wood-fired boiler and turbine
producing steam heat and electricity by
recycling systems.
The incorporation of this latest technology
and equipment in the industry has enabled
DiPrizio Pine Sales to become a premier
brand in Eastern White Pine quality, product
selection, reliable shipments, and competitive
pricing. While DiPrizio Pine Sales manufactures
and remans 15-20 million board
feet of Eastern White Pine each year, it is
not the largest mill in New England. It is,
however, one of the most modern. The mill
carries an extensive inventory of kiln-dried
4/4 through 6/4 Eastern White Pine lumber,
White Pine timber, Red Pine flooring and Vjoint
decking, as well as unique products
such as 6/4 log siding, bevel clapboards,
Pictured are: Scott Brown, sales manager for
DiPrizio Pine Sales; Dave Mansfield, sawmill
supervisor; and Christian Doyle, boiler, kiln and
quality control supervisor. They are standing in
front of a row of Eastern White Pine logs.
Sales Manager Scott Brown in the
DiPrizio Pine Sales’ warehouse in front of
Eastern White Pine products. The firm
maintains its inventory at approximately 1
million board feet.
Marcella Perry, the general operations manager
for Diprizio Pine Sales, standing in front
of Eastern White Pine lumber on sticks,
staged for drying.
paneling, and pre-stained trim, including a
vast variety of finger-jointed products with
the quality Weinig moulder finish. DiPrizio
Pine Sales stands out in
its ability to handle
requests for special patterns,
grade programs,
and variety of services.
The company uses
computerized techniques
to ensure accuracy;
and, because of
the firm’s warehouse
inventory system, most
orders can be turned
around within 10 days
or sooner if it is in our
running finished inventory.
“Our goal in the manufacturing
and service
sector is to produce the
most consistent high
quality products with reliable,
on-time shipments.”
“Our goal in the distribution
chain,” says Larry Huot,
President of DiPrizio Pine
Sales, “is to help our wholesale
distributor clients avoid
a duplication in handling
and overhead by having us
perform those same steps
in our normal material flow.
The net result is that our
clients can be more profitable
using DiPrizio services.”
Not only does the company
supply its products to
LaValley-Middleton
Building Supply stores, but
lumber is also shipped
throughout the United
States—as far away as
California. Most of the
DiPrizio brand-name products,
though, remain in the
New England and Mid-
Atlantic areas where they
are well known by buyers
who supply dealers servicing
craftsmen specializing
in new building, renovation,
and restoration projects.
The DiPrizio - Brand
Difference: “we pride ourselves
on a DiPrizio and
LaValley family rule: we listen
to our customers’ needs
and work to fill those needs
at the lowest possible cost
for our customers.”
In 2007, when Public
Service of New Hampshire
(PSNH), the state’s largest
electric utility, decided to
discontinue its sawmill rate
program (a 75% reduction
in demand charges),
DiPrizio Pine Sales began a process of
“going green.” With additional drying costs
and forecasted increases in electrical rates
and oil prices, DiPrizio Pine turned to cogeneration
technology (wood-fired boilers
and turbines) to reduce expenses. Marcella
Perry, Director of Operations at the mill, led
and championed the endeavor to fund the
project.
With a responsible use of renewable
resources, DiPrizio has reduced its demand
for oil by 390,500 gallons and its SO2 emissions
by 18.6 percent. DiPrizio Pine Sales
also meets or exceeds all Hazardous Air
Pollutant (HAP) regulations.
According to the company’s estimates,
7,500 gallons of No. 2 fuel oil are required
each week to process 600,000 board feet of
lumber. DiPrizio has replaced fossil fuel
with 41.5 tons of by-product such as sawdust,
woodchips, and whole-wood chips.
The turbine produces approximately 60 percent
of DiPrizio’s electrical needs, and the
steam from the boiler is used to heat several
buildings.
NELMA-certified DiPrizio Pine Sales is a
member of the Northeastern Lumbermen’s
Association (NELMA), a charter member of
the North American Wholesale Lumber
Association (NAWLA) Traders Market ® , the
New Hampshire Timberland Owners
TEAL-JONES – Successful
For More Than 45 Years
S u r r e y , B . C . —The Teal-Jones
Group is a fully integrated Forest
Company, which encompasses everything
from timber harvesting to manufacturing
and sales of finished products.
The Teal-Jones Group has
remained a
privately
owned and
operated
family business
with
brothers
Tom and
Dick Jones
as CEO,
President
a n d
Visionaries.
In 1946, the
company
began as a
o n e
machine
shingle mill
owned and
operated by
J a c k
Sheldon
Jones.
In 1962,
Jack built
Teal Cedar
Products
(four shingle
machine
mill) on the
banks of the
Fraser River
where the
group is
headquartered
today.
Shortly after
establishing
Teal, Jack passed
away leaving his three
sons Tom, Dick and
(Harry deceased 1976)
the fledgling operation
with 11 employees.
Over the years the
Teal Cedar Shake &
Shingle mill has grown
and expanded its facilities
to meet the
increasing demands
for its products. Always
the innovators, Teal
added the Reman
(Rebutted and
Rejointed Sidewall Shingles) along with
the paint finishing system, and specialty
products division. The company
expanded its investment in the industry
by building new Shake and Shingle
Mills throughout various communities in
British Columbia during the 70’s and
80’s.
In the late 1970’s the brothers decided
to become involved in the lumber
industry and built Stag Timber which
focused on cutting high-value grade
logs and custom cutting for their customers.
This facility has since been
retooled to accommodate new efficiencies
and the latest technology to cut
Hemlock, Douglas Fir, Spruce and
Western Red Cedar.
In 1993, the purchase of a Timber
West Sawmill and Forest License provided
the company with 2 ingredients
needed to enhance and develop the
overall organization – a larger sawmill
and direct access to raw fiber.
From 1999 to 2004 Teal made the
strategic decision to purchase TFLs
(Tree Farm Licenses), which provide
direct access to harvesting timber in
specific areas. These large acquisitions
have positioned the company to be
independent of log market conditions
when obtaining raw fiber for their mills.
While the company still purchases logs
on the open market, they are not completely
dependent on the market as
many other manufacturers are. This
positions Teal Cedar Products as the
only shake and shingle mill on the
Coast to have direct access to raw
fiber, which assures our valued customers
of not only a consistently high
quality product but a steady and
dependable source of it.
In 2003 The Teal-Jones Group
unveiled the first high speed sawmill to
IDAHO TIMBER Employees
Contribute To Success
The management team of Idaho Timber, located in Boise, Idaho, is
made up of many industry veterans. Ted Ellis, president and chief
executive officer, leads the company, which began in 1979.
Boise, Idaho —Idaho Timber, headquartered
here, believes strongly in the
power of its people — the employees
who have given the
company its reputation
in the market.
Ted Ellis, president
and chief executive
officer, said their
hard work is impossible
to duplicate.
“We have found that
our business model
from an equipment
and manufacturing
standpoint is easy to
duplicate,” Ellis said.
“The expertise of the
people is nearly
impossible to duplicate
due to the base
of experience, length
of service and talent
we have been able
to attract and retain
within our company.”
Idaho Timber, which began in 1979,
maintains a sawmilling operation in
Carthage, Ark., which specializes in 5/4
Troy, Idaho.
The Weiser, Idaho facility produces
boards in Ponderosa Pine, Spruce and
Radiata Pine (1x4 to 1x12), Lodgepole
Pine (1x4 through 1x12), and pattern
stock and strips (1x2, 1x3, 2x2). The
Boise facility produces Doug Fir and
Hem-Fir studs and dimension (2x4
Ellis said Idaho Timber’s goal
is “having enough of the quality
products that our customers need on a
daily basis and attempting to provide
them within 24 hours.”
Idaho Timber maintains 11 facilities throughout the U.S., including this manufacturing
“We are a very service-oriented organization,”
he said. “We’re known for our
people and our ability to service our customers.
Most of our managers have
grown from the bottom up and gained a
tremendous amount of experience.”
“They have greater empathy
and understand their customer’s
needs,” Ellis said.
“That’s what allows you to be
the best at what you do.”
The Idaho Timber management
team continues to focus
on the basics of running a
good company. They have
been able to retain key people
while also adding exceptional
people that have been displaced
by the market. The
team is ready to accelerate
quickly when the market circumstances
change and pro-
vide new opportunities.
“Even though we are concerned
about the current market,
we are excited about the
opportunities for growth,” Ellis said.
“Overall, Idaho Timber is looking forward
to taking advantage of the new opportunities
that will soon present themselves
due the eventual balance between supply
iNELMA Brings New Innovation to the Marketplace
Cumberland Centre, Maine–While
the lumber industry’s rich history is something
that the Northeastern Lumber
Manufacturers Association (NELMA) sees
great merit in preserving, it also values
exploring ways to propel the industry into
tomorrow. Most recently NELMA has taken
note of how innovative technology can be
applied to everyday activities. By advancing
the technology of its own resources
and services, NELMA is making strides to
offer even deeper levels of convenience
and value on behalf of its membership.
For many, witnessing how NELMA actively
incorporates innovation into the industry
will soon be as easy as looking at an
iPhone. With over one billion iPhone apps
downloaded and roughly 65,000 applications
in existence, NELMA is well aware of
the growing attraction to the iPhone among
its target audience. Responding to
increased interest and use, NELMA introduces
two new iPhone applications early
this fall.
The first iPhone application will be available
for the public to download directly
(free of charge) from the App Store to their
iPhones. The purpose
of this app is
to make NELMA’s
most popular and
referenced publications
readily
available for easy
access. Simply
put, the convenience
of carrying
around NELMA
materials will soon
be, literally, a finger’s
touch away.
The publications
and photos to be
incorporated into
NELMA’s new
iPhone app
include:
Patterns of
Eastern White Pine Brochure – A new
platform showcasing the 23 standard patterns
of Eastern White Pine on all aspects
of designing and specifying
EWP products for siding, paneling
and other interior products.
Standard Grading Rules
for Northeastern Lumber –
As one of seven lumber rules
writing agencies in the U.S. &
Canada accredited by the
American Lumber Standard
Committee (ALSC), NELMA
was the first to provide them
online. Now they’ll be even
more easily accessible
through the iPhone.
Eastern White Pine Grade
Photo Sheets – Helping
architects, designers and
builders understand and
specify the right grade for the
right application. At every
stage of the construction
process, quick access to this
information will come in very
handy, especially while on
site.
The Architectural Series of White Pine
Monographs – The revitalized
Monographs bring
all the beauty, uses
and reliable
resources of
Eastern White Pine
to today’s leading
experts and industry
consumers.
With each revitalized
issue readily
available, the stories
behind the
projects are shared
on a whole new
level.
The focus around
the first iPhone app
is to offer a diverse
assortment of
material as well as
end-use photos
that are both applicable in the field and for
enjoyment after a hard days work.
The focus around the first iPhone app is to offer a
diverse assortment of material as well as end-use photos
that are both applicable in the field and for enjoyment
after a hard days work. Delivering fresh content on
a recurring basis, this app will always offer a new perspective.
Tripp Lumber Co.
Missoula, MT
Tripp Lumber Co. introduces brand new
for 2009 and years to come: Wavy edge
siding. This product is available in a
Timber and Bevel siding. The new Wavy
edge siding is a product that will give
your home or building the custom look
you desire. The Wavy edge siding is produced
with our newly designed custom
siding machine. We at Tripp Lumber Co.
set out to design a product that would
satisfy both customers and onlookers
alike, and we believe we have done it
with the new custom Wavy edge siding.
It is guaranteed to bring the beauty and
uniqueness to your home or building
that you have been searching for.
The first iPhone application will be
available for the public to download
directly (free of charge) from the App
Store to their iPhones.
Delivering fresh content on a
recurring basis, this app will
always offer a new perspective.
The second iPhone app is
proprietary for NELMA’s
internal operations, which
will significantly increase the
efficiency and speed of
NELMA’s Wood Packaging
Inspections. Through its
IPPC ISPM 15 certification
inspection services, NELMA
works directly with facilities
that produce wood packaging
materials (WPM) such as
boxes, crates, skids and pallets
destined for use in
exporting goods to countries
that have implemented the
International Standard for
Wood Packaging.
Dependent on the operation
type, there are several
different scenarios that
NELMA inspectors evaluate
monthly, and soon on site with their
iPhones:
Wood Packaging
M a t e r i a l
Manufacturing
Facilities –
Facilities that use
Heat Treated (HT)
lumber to construct
WPM. The lumber
must be stamped
with a certified HT
mark, conveying
that the heat treatment
process
reached the appropriate
time and temperaturerequirements.
Heat Treated
L u m b e r
Remanufacturing – An operation that
buys “HT” stamped lumber to then re-manufacture
it into components to be sold to a
wood packaging facility that produces
The second iPhone app is proprietary for NELMA’s internal
operations, which will significantly increase the efficiency
and speed of NELMA’s Wood Packaging
Inspections.
WPM.
Heat Treatment Facilities – Facilities
that heat-treat lumber or the finished wood
packaging item via a hotbox, oven, or conventional
dry kiln. This scenario requires
the facility to apply either the HT stamp to
lumber, or the IPPC stamp to WPM.
The NELMA inspector will use the iPhone
to select the appropriate evaluation form
for that specific type of operation. From
there, the proprietary app does most of the
driving. The inspector is led through a customized
checklist, which even includes an
interactive inventory list of that facility’s HT
lumber along with the ability to take pictures,
provide comments, and upload them
directly to the app.
The result is not only more thorough documentation
of the inspection, but this progressive
iPhone app also streamlines the
reporting process. A system that used to
take piles of paper and hours of data-entry,
has now been completely streamlined with
the use of technology. Once an inspector
completes the evaluation, submitting it to
NELMA headquarters is as simple as
touching a button. From there, it is automatically
filed into
NELMA’s central
database, creating a
PDF of the inspection
report which is
then immediately
emailed or faxed to
the facility for their
records.
With these two
exciting projects,
NELMA is making an
active link between
the lumber industry’s
innovative past with
its promising future.
TROUT RIVER LUMBER Provides Quality SYP Pattern Stock
Chris Twiford, of Trout River Lumber’s sales team, is standing
beside a flooring display. Trout River Lumber LLC is located in
Crewe, Va.
C r e w e , V a . —Established in 1998,
Trout River Lumber LLC manufactures
quality Southern Yellow Pine pattern
stock. Known as an industry leader in
innovation, the company also provides
pre-finished flooring, reclaimed heart pine
flooring, custom milling, resawing, endmatching,
ripping, cut to length and packaging
services.
Utilizing properly dried and conditioned
materials Trout River Lumber produces a
full line of products for the treated industry
and industrial market. “We have
always been proud to be known as the
lumber guys,” said John Barber, the company’s
owner. “We have taken steps to
continually innovate our operation since
inception, and we are excited about the
paths we are taking.”
Marketing products to more than 50
wholesale lumber and flooring distributors
nationwide, the company developed a
national distribution-marketing plan. Trout
River Lumber manufactures multiple
products, with, Southern Yellow Pine pattern
stock being the company’s primary
focus. Trout River Lumber packages all
New from Rosboro
standard
Pine patterns
in
plastic wrap
and prefinishedflooring
orders
are boxed
prior to shipping.
The
firm also
has the
capability to
package in
its own
brand or
facilitate privatelabeling
for the
customer.
Trout River Lumber is always
developing new and exciting ideas
to generate product awareness and
drive demand. This year’s major
marketing program involves an
opportunity for lumber retailers to
win a 2009 Harley Davidison
Heritage Softail Classic Motorcycle.
“We do everything possible to do what
the customer wants and needs,” Barber
said. The considerable amount of production
achieved at Trout River is not only
due to its capable staff, but also due to the
sophisticated technology used by the
company. For example, five high speed
moulders create the patterns incorporated
in the firm’s various styles, including innovative
PVC mouldings and profiles. Three
units are Wadkins moulders and two are
Leadermacs. The combination of a skilled
staff, state-of-the-art equipment, and
innovative leadership give Trout River
Lumber the agility to perform in an everchanging
market.
Other equipment involved in production
include a Doucet End Matcher and a
Systems TM Optimizer. Also, Trout
River’s gang rip is capable of producing a
12-inch multi-cut at 270 feet per minute,
and a state-of-the-art plastic wrapping
machine enables the company to provide
shrink wrap packaging.
Trout River Lumber is spurred to the
Rosboro Select Joist
Trout River Lumber’s owner John Barber.
main line of Norfolk Southern
Railroad and also ships via
truck in full, mixed and less-than-truckload
(LTL) quantities. The latter mode of
transporting has proven very beneficial for
both Trout River and its customers.
Barber explained, “LTL has proven successful
for our prefinished and nested
flooring products, because it is clean,
easy and quick for us and the customer.
Here’s an example of how we’ve made it
work. We have the ability to LTL to the distributor,
or their customer, very economically
because of the manner in which the
product is packaged. Some of the product
will be in nested units and some in boxes.
You can’t LTL 16 foot of lumber very well,
but you can LTL boxes and units that are
seven feet.
“This service is something that we like to
do,” he continued. “We have generated
about $2 million per year in additional
sales by doing LTL. This helps us, and it
helps our customer get the product to his
end-user. Even customers who are not
flooring distributors, but are lumber customers,
occasionally call us and say they
have a customer that has an order for 350
feet of Pine. We can easily put that
amount of Pine on the LTL truck directly to
that customer.”
The open-minded manner in which Trout
River’s leadership accepts potential business
opportunities recently helped Barber
define the next step in the company’s
Forging Ahead: Expanded Products and
Services to Help Advance Your Business
Enjoy a wider selection with these recent editions to
Rosboro’s family of trusted products:
immediate future.
“We’ve gone from nothing to about half a
million feet per month in prefinished Pine
by being open to possibilities. This is what
works for us.”
Trout River Lumber’s current domestic
market for prefinished flooring products
stretches nationwide, and its primary customer
base consists of flooring and
wholesale distributors.
Trout River Lumber LLC is active in various
professional organizations, including
the North American Wholesale Lumber
Assoc., National Wood Flooring Assoc.
and the Southern Forest Products Assoc.
(Southern Pine Council).
Respectful of the past, yet focused on
the future, Barber said Trout River
Lumber’s overall goal is to “stay ahead of
the curve in the lumber industry. The cost
of being ahead of the curve is that we can
put a lot of effort into a project that will
benefit our customers.”
“Yet, the reward of staying ahead of the
curve is the ability to be a market innovator,
and really come up with products that
make sense. That’s the path we plan to
keep Trout River Lumber on.”
“At Tripp Lumber, once we get customers
D a v e
Tripp,
owner and
president.
“We value
that personalrelationship
Success in
hinges on
most importantly, it’s about service and
treating people with respect.”
Tripp Lumber’s products have
evolved through the years, and now
the company specializes in several
specific items, such as quality log siding.
“We are now one of the top producers
of log siding in the industry,” Tripp said.
“I think our ability to change and find
niche products to market are keys to
our overall success. Through the years
we have made and perfected new
products that our customers, who are
wholesale distributors, appreciate the
quality work we do. Also, we offer our
customers the most competitive prices
and offer added value through various
services, and we can do all this while
promising a turn-around on the product
within two weeks.” Tripp Lumber
introduces brand new for 2009: wavy
edge siding.
This product is available in a timber
and bevel siding. “The new wavy edge
siding is a product that will give your
home or building the custom look you
edge siding is produced with our newly
designed custom siding machine. We
at Tripp Lumber set out to design a
product that will satisfy both customers
and onlookers alike, and we believe
we have done it with the new custom
wavy edge siding. It is guaranteed to
bring the beauty and uniqueness that
you have been searching for to your
home or building.”
Products manufactured at the company
include Grizzly Hewn Log Siding
and Timber Siding, which appeal to
many of Tripp Lumber’s customers
due to its rustic appearance.
“Grizzly Hewn Log and Timber Siding
does not look manufactured,” said
Derk Stewart, sales representative.
“We continue to sell a lot of the smooth
log siding, but sales of the hand-hewn
siding have increased in the last three
either log homes or luxury homes,”
Tripp said. “They want a consistent
look for their entire home, rather than
have just the exterior of the home
appear to be a log cabin or home.”
Tripp Lumber further enables customers
to assimilate the “log cabin
look” or a “timber frame look” in their
homes by marketing accent items,
such as log corners, posts, beams,
stair railings and stair treads.
“We have the complete interior and
exterior log home and timber frame
package,” Tripp said.
Installation of new equipment in
recent years, including Yates
American A20 planers, chop saws,
trim saws, resaws and a wavy edge
machine has facilitated faster production,
thus faster deliveries from Tripp
Lumber.
Tripp Lumber Co., with customers in
nearly every state in the U.S., and the
highest concentration in the South, is
capable of producing 250,000 board
feet of lumber per day at its 8-acre
facility. It maintains a 5 million board
foot inventory in various widths and
thicknesses, ranging from 1x4 to 3x10
in Lodgepole Pine, Douglas Fir, Hem-
Fir, Ponderosa Pine and Cedar.
Tripp Lumber, which ships via BNSF
railroad and independent trucking carriers,
offers such value added services
as transport of mixed loads, repackaging,
reload/unload and bar coding of
yard packs to assist in tracking customers’
inventory.
“Our secret to success is simple,”
Tripp said. “We cater to making products
that people want, and I’m proud to
say that some of my customers have
faithfully been with me for more than
39 years.”
New London, N.H.—Durgin & Crowell
Lumber Co., located here, has thrived during
its 33 years in operation as a manufacturer
of Eastern White Pine (EWP)
products due to the firm’s ability to recognize
and meet the ever-changing needs of
an ever-changing lumber industry.
The company continues to build on its
Chuck Gaede and B Manning handle sales for Durgin & Crowell Lumber Co.
in New London, N.H.
success with its Enhance Paneling and
Flooring product. Much more than just
another coating, Enhance combines the
latest technology in vacuum coating with
the first of its kind pulsating UV drying.
The pulsating dryer eliminates any of the
problems associated with excess heat.
The end result is a completely coated
UV finish, free of all harmful VOCs, more
scratch resistant, with less yellowing
than has been available. An inline eight
head profile sander softens the surface
to accept the coating and eliminate any
defects from dressing. The end result is
a completely finished product ready to
install.
All Enhance paneling and flooring is
wrapped, bar coded and staged for shipment
in a 135,000-square-foot distribu-
Durgin & Crowell’s Enhanced Paneling and Flooring travels
through an 8-head profile sander before being processed in
the Delle Vedove vacuum coated UV curable paint machine.
tion center, and all loads are kept under
cover and loaded under cover to protect
the material from negative side effects of
the weather.
Company sales manager B Manning
noted specific steps taken at the firm to
address and overcome these EWP issues
in regard to production of Enhance products.
First, torn grain around the knots on EWP
has routinely presented problems in the
production of this species. At Durgin &
Crowell, computer guided lasers accurately
measure and maintain target size, and a
usage of a modern fully equipped filing
room has virtually eliminated the issue of
torn grains.
Consistency in EWP grade has been
achieved with the installation of the first
fully automated grader in North America
for this wood species. Durgin & Crowell
uses this Finnish Grader, which is commonly
utilized throughout Europe due to
the fact that it is so advanced.
Durgin & Crowell also utilizes smaller dry
kilns than most mills in order to offset the
challenges involved with drying EWP. The
firm sorts the lumber prior to drying it to
achieve a uniform product. Manning stated
that the more uniform the lumber is
going into the kiln, the better its chances of
remaining uniform as it leaves the kilns.
Two inline Wagner moisture meters perform
final moisture inspection. Each of the
boards at Durgin & Crowell has 100 percent
of its surface area checked for mois-
BByy TTeerrrryy MMiilllleerr
ture prior to dressing. This not only eliminates
“wet” boards, but also identifies
small water pockets that are difficult to
see, yet can cause many problems in the
product.
Manning added that all pattern stock at
the firm is dressed with a Weinig/Waco
30XL Moulder, which is uniquely designed
to run Softwood paneling.
Durgin & Crowell’s fully
computer-controlled
grinding shop performs
all knife grinding, and
consistency among the
knives is assured by
using Hydro-Lock heads.
Three certified NELMA
graders perform final
grading at Durgin &
Crowell where a special
slow-down grading station
allows inspection of
each individual piece.
Manning said that by
slowing the feed speed
down to one-third,
graders have ample time
to carry out full inspec-
tions.
Established in 1976 by
Chemists and technicians spent countless hours preparing
the best solutions by using test stages prior to Durgin &
Crowell’s release of the Enhanced products.
Peter O. Crowell and Arthur Durgin
as a small, eight-person rough green
sawmill, the company today produces
more than 30 million board feet of
kiln-dried lumber and dresses
Eastern White Pine boards in more
than 30 patterns. Durgin & Crowell’s
growth as a company has been
marked not only by increased production,
but also by technological
improvements in efficiency, quality
and safety.
A totally integrated forest resource
company, Durgin & Crowell’s manufacturing
operation includes a modern
two-sided sawmill, a woodwaste
boiler, aluminum computer controlled
dry kilns, state-of-the-art planning and
distribution center and an optimized cut-up
shop.
Durgin & Crowell has consistently been
an active supporter of both the community
in which it is located, and the forest products
industry. The company provides education
scholarships to graduates of the
three local New London high schools, is a
major donor to New Hampshire Project
Learning Tree and a supporter of the
Society for the Protection of New
Hampshire Timberlands Owners Assoc.,
as well as the Northern Logger Assoc.
Each of these associations has recognized
Durgin & Crowell as the outstanding
forest product industry of the year.
Manning has served as chairman of the
grading committee and chairman of the
board of directors for the Northeastern
Lumber Manufacturers Assoc.
Other members of the sales and marketing
department at Durgin & Crowell
include Chuck Gaede, sales, Jason
Heiser, inventory/trucking and Tracey
Gonea, administration. All three staff
members are certified NELMA graders and
are actively involved in the daily manufacturing
process, which better positions
them to understand the needs of the company’s
customers.
Western Red Cedar --
Continued from page 23
the awareness of Western Red Cedar
products. The benefit of pooling together
the dues of individual companies to
create a promotional program, which far
exceeds that which a company could do
on its own, is evident. Following are
highlights of the WRCLA’s promotional
activities.
The earned media program achieved
very impressive results despite the negative
economy. The association’s
Western Red Cedar messaging was
featured in 2,391 (print, online and
broadcast) stories (42 percent more stories
than last year) and reached almost
65 million people with an estimated ad
equivalency of US$5.2million year to
date (an increase of more than 57 percent).
Over 140 ad insertions were placed.
Collectively these ads reached more
than 18 million readers. The audience
mix is 44.7 percent consumer, 28.0 percent
architect, 15.3 percent builder and
12.1 percent trade. The value of this
coverage is more than US$2.3million;
however, the WRCLA’s net cost was
less than 25 percent of that thanks to an
aggressive ad purchasing policy.
The WRCLA established a presence on
the SWEETS network. Targeting architects,
this online resource offers the latest
green products, trends, innovations
and new developments. The WRCLA’s
presence on ARCAT.com continues to
yield significant exposure amongst the
architect community. Architects are
able to access technical information
including downloads of specs for siding,
decking, trim and timbers.
The Western Red Cedar Architectural
Design Awards received 117 outstanding
entries. The high profile jury of leading
architects selected 10 projects for
their innovative design. The WRCLA
extended recognition to one additional
project due to its dramatic use of
Western Red Cedar in its design. You
can see all the winners on the WRCLA
homepage www.wrcla.org.
The WRCLA has produced a new
Cedar decking and design book titled
“Real Cedar Projects For Around Your
Home.” This brochure covers the features
and benefits of Western Red
Cedar for outdoor living applications,
including detailed project plans ranging
from small weekend projects to lavish
applications of Western Red Cedar for
outdoor applications. This publication is
a complement to the DIY videos available
on the WRCLA YouTube channel
Successful wholesalers are not necessarily
larger or luckier than their wholesale distribution
competitors. Instead, executives leading
these companies are doing a better job of positioning
themselves in the common external
environment we all face. The difference
between the winners and “the also-rans” comes
from the ability to link a fundamental understanding
of external business trends. Couple
that with an awareness of how to profit from the
trends, followed by appropriate strategy execution,
delivers results. Dr. Fein will share his
ideas on probable future directions for the
building products distribution system as well as
discuss success strategies for wholesalers and
their suppliers.
Often, I will contact colleagues I met at
NAWLA functions to get their feedback
on business issues. That’s value-added!
As a marketing executive, I have also
found the Traders Market to be a great
way to establish connections with our
many suppliers and their marketing staff
and learn about new products launching
in our marketplace. During these tough
times, it is especially important to review
your product mix and services to ensure
you have the right offering for your customer
base. Think about what differentiates
you from your competition: Are you
innovative and continuously striving to
carry the latest leading-edge products?
Do you provide services that your competition
doesn’t? The Traders Market is
one way to help you link up with the right
supplier.
When the Traders Market changed their
requirements to allow wholesalers to
exhibit a few years ago, North Pacific
was one of the first wholesale companies
to have a booth. We now participate
as an exhibitor every other year, using it
as a way to promote ourselves and tell
our story to our suppliers.
North Pacific supports many associations
in the building material and forest
products industries. Many of our staff
put in their valuable time to help NAWLA
through committee and board involvement.
We have also been a sponsor of
the Traders Market for many, many
years. And this year, North Pacific is
sponsoring the Early Bird Reception, so
This is more than enough reason
for Richardson Timbers, LLC. to attend.
I attended the 2008 Traders Market and
was expecting doom and gloom from
everyone and I left Chicago, realizing
that yes—2009 was going to be a tough
going to stand strong, face the challenges
and plan for the future and I
believe we have done just that. The
NAWLA Traders Market showed unity,
expect the same from the 2009 show in
November and we will attend once
to get the feel of the wholesale lumber
industry. With all of the big players of the
Industry in attendance, from long-term
customers, new prospects, and even
our competitors, the Traders Market
gives a “green” individual a full immersion
experience.
The second reason we are looking forward
to this year’s Traders Market is the
addition of the product showcase segments.
We are excited about Eastern
White Pine, and are eager to showcase
its beauty and versatility to everyone.
Jim Robbins, the president of Robbins
Lumber Inc., will be giving the seminar
and we encourage anyone who can to
attend.
Even though our industry has continued
to struggle through a difficult market,
Robbins Lumber is well situated to come
through the storm in a strong position,
and we view the annual Traders Market
as an important part of our plan. Looking
forward to seeing old friends and new
friends alike this fall!
effort to promote commerce within the
lumber and building products industry.
We view the NAWLA Traders Market ®
as a must-attend event based on the
fact it is the one event that our best customers
and many other business partners
attend each year. The Traders
Market gives us a chance to meet with
many customers face-to-face that we
may not see during the year and also for
us to network and learn about issues
and opportunities impacting our markets.
This interaction is very valuable to
us.
When our industry is faced with difficult
market conditions it could become easy
to look for ways to cut costs by limiting
our travel and attendance at certain
events. The success and positive experience
we have had with the NAWLA
Traders Market over many years of
attendance has demonstrated clearly
that the benefits of our participation far
outweigh the time and expense to attend
this event.”
