Follow-up for women after treatment of CIN
• Treated women at 2-5x increased risk cervical cancer compared
to general population (Soutter et al, 1997). Much of increased
risk may be to poor compliance of long-term follow up (Soutter et
al, 2005, Strander et al, 2008).
• Good compliance to be encouraged.
No changes planned at present but the following is to be
considered.
Further data from trials/ pilots will become available.
• There is evidence that all women who had treatment for CIN
should have HPV (HC 2) test @ 6 months as well as cervical
cytology/ HPV test between 12-18 months.
• If all 3 of these tests -ve, return to routine 3-5 yearly testing.
• Location – community/ colposcopy clinic.
• Data are now accumulating suggesting this is safe approach.
NHSCSP would support the development of lab infrastructure to
allow this to be introduced as part of routine practice in due
course.
