Cadbor o Bay, Br it ish Columbia. Shor t for m of<br />

Cadborosaurus, coined at t he same t ime.<br />

Variant names: Amy, Cadbor osaur us, Edizgigant<br />

eus (aft er Ediz Hook Light , Washingt on),<br />

Haietluk, Klamahsosaur us (on Texada Island),<br />

Penda (aft er Pender Island).<br />

Scientific name: Cadborosaurus willsi, proposed<br />

by Edwar d L. Bousfield and Paul H.<br />

LeBlond in 1995.<br />

Physical description: Ser pent ine body t hat<br />

for ms many humps or loops. Lengt h, 16–100<br />

feet . Diamet er , 2 feet 6 inches–8 feet . Light<br />

br own t o black. Small head r esembles a sheep,<br />

hor se, gir affe, or camel. Eyes in t he fr ont of t he<br />

head. Small ears or hor ns. Point ed t ongue. Two<br />

rows of fishlike t eet h. Mane or fur somet imes r epor<br />

t ed. Neck is 3–12 feet long, about as t hick as<br />

an arm. One pair of fr ont flipper s. Back somet<br />

imes appears ser r at ed, somet imes smoot h. Flat<br />

tail is fluked or for med fr om fused back flipper s.<br />

Behavior: Does not appear t o undulat e when<br />

it swims. Fast swimming speed, clocked at 40<br />

knot s. Br eat hes in shor t pant s. Makes whalelike<br />

gr unt s and hisses. Feeds on her r ing, salmon, and<br />

ducks.<br />

Distribution: Br it ish Columbia seacoast , especially<br />

around Cadbor o Bay and t he St r ait of<br />

Geor gia.<br />

Significant sightings: A cr ew member of t he<br />

ship Columbia under Amer ican fur t r ader Capt .<br />

Rober t Gr ay was t he fir st t o r epor t a Caddy<br />

sight ing in 1791.<br />

Br it ish Columbia, on June 26, 1897.<br />

In Sept ember 1905 or 1906, Philip H. Welch<br />

saw a br own animal wit h a 6- t o 8-foot neck<br />

fr om a dist ance of 100 yards away in Johnst one<br />

St rait . It had t wo bumps on it s head t hat wer e 5<br />

inches high and r ounded on t op.<br />

F. W. Kemp and his wife and son wat ched an<br />

80-foot maned animal while t hey wer e sit t ing<br />

on t he Chat ham Island beach, Br it ish Columbia,<br />

on August 10, 1932.<br />

On Sept ember 23, 1933, Dor ot hea Hooper<br />

and a neighbor obser ved a ser pent ine animal<br />

wit h a ser r at ed back cavor t ing in Cadbor o Bay<br />

about 400 yards dist ant . It cr eat ed a commot ion<br />

in t he wat er as it swam out <strong>to</strong> sea.<br />

Maj. W. H. Langley and his wife wer e sailing<br />

in Haro St r ait on Oct ober 1, 1933, when t hey<br />

heard a loud gr unt off Chat ham Island. They<br />

saw t he back of a huge, dark-gr een cr eat ur e wit h<br />

serrated markings on t he t op and sides.<br />

Char les F. Eagles sket ched a 60-foot animal<br />

that he saw in Oak Bay on Oct ober 14, 1933. It<br />

had cr ocodile-like spines on it s neck.<br />

On December 3, 1933, Just ice of t he Peace<br />

G. F. Par kyn of Bedwell Har bour was one of<br />

twelve people wat ching fr om Pender Island as<br />

an animal wit h a large, hor selike head and neck<br />

gulped down a duck t hat had just been shot by<br />

Cyr il Andr ews.<br />

In 1936, E. J. St ephenson and his wife and<br />

son wat ched a yellow-and-bluish, 90-foot -long,<br />

3-foot -t hick animal cr awling over a r eef int o a<br />

lagoon on Sat ur na Island.<br />

A 10- t o 12-foot carcass of apparent ly a<br />

young Caddy was r emoved fr om t he st omach of<br />

a sperm whale, phot ogr aphed, and displayed for<br />

a while at Naden Harbour whaling st at ion in<br />

1937. The phot o shows it st r et ched out on
