Aneurysm Mother & Father 06.02.2008 Impressions of my mother (written by my mother) I remember the day of the accident and, the many weeks after it. Thursday, the 11. August 2005 was for me a day like any other - only afterwards I recognized that I had an unusual unrest in me. Normally I do not believe in such things. But it was something that frightened me completely fundamentally. The following morning then the message of Hartwig's accident. My man and I were as agitated by the thunder. How does it continue with Hartwig, what happens next? We knew from a similar case in the circle of acquaintances, which found a good end after relatively short time. Of course we hoped naturally also for our case for a similar result. I wanted to travel do Berlin as fast as possible - they said that life is not 100 percent in danger - but how knows that? I call myself as a believing christian and tried with prayers to take comfort. Having arrived in Berlin, Annett and I made together with Maya a first visit to the hospital. My first impression was rather frightening. Many machines there, Hartwig fixed and without consciousness. The next 4 weeks we saw ourselves daily twice at the hospital, but no news. Hartwig before hat healthy and strong - now helplessly, participateless and dependently. We were always full of fear, which will happen next when we visited him. We tried to get reactions by body contact. Sometimes we believed to feel an easy handshake. By high fever, unknown reason, his situation got worse. Different treatments did not bring the expected success. Only the leg break healed relatively good. We went to Hartwig into the room, one remained alternating with the child in the vestibule. After some weeks in which we waited without success for a reaction of Hartwig, we - Annett, Maya and I again we where waiting grievedly in the vestibule as Hartwig was driven in the hospital bed by. We waited in all the weeks in vain for a reaction and were considerable depressed. What the trip was for and where Hartwig become attentive to the child, we don't know - he showed suddenly a reaction. We were lucky together with the care forces and surprised. A controversy between the doctors and the care forces inflamed between the two forces. Would it be an advantage to take a child also into the treatment room? We were allowed to take Maya also in the treatment room - once! We took her to
the bed of Hartwig - Maya at that time a good half year old - showed no fear and it were like a small miracle - Hartwig opened the eyes and cared the child. We were so glad! Due to substantial doubts of the medical profession this attendance was unique. Even if in the consequence still many difficulties and setbacks arose - this was the beginning of the improvement. It was of course a bit frightening to see how much of the brain was damaged. But Hartwig was developing such a lot of optimism and was spending such a lot of effort to re-establish as much as possible. And that is now, 2 1/2 years after that still necessary. With beginning of the rehabilitation in Kladow Hartwig began to start to learn, learn and learn to improve his status. By his wife Annett he got and he gets supported excellent. It makes us all happy that we can support him and we try to strengthen him. The balance of all efforts is so far absolutely great and will surely continue. We are happy that he kept his love-worth nature and we hope that he will be able to recover as fast as possible. What I for my part experienced during that time, belongs to the worst experiences of my life. In all experienced fears, my believe in God was the secure refuge in all emergencies. With this confidence I go into the future. Everything which I wrote, applies also to my husband.
