2. Pavia is convenient for the pope<br />

[32] I now move on to the second part.<br />

As I said in the beginning, we need a location that is convenient for the pope to<br />

meet with the council. This is quite reasonable. For if you want to invite the Greeks<br />

to unite with you, you ought yourselves to be united first so that the Greeks will find<br />

no schism, no disunity and no dispute between you. Obviously, the Greeks will be<br />

brought back 389 more easily if they find that you are of one mind than if they find<br />

that you are divided. And we should ourselves unite first not just because of the<br />

union with Greeks, but also in order to put an end to all the scandals and the<br />

countless evils which have been caused by our disunity - or to put it more properly:<br />

our schism. This is what the king’s ambassador, Simon Charles 390 , a man of singular<br />

wisdom and eloquence, urged so brilliantly in this very room. Honourable Fathers,<br />

when you choose the location, you should heed his words and take great care to<br />

make it possible for the pope to participate.<br />
