The WWW interface of the Biology Workbench provides a uniform user interface<br />

which most researchers are already familiar with, thus reducing the amount of<br />

computer knowledge needed to utilize the tools <strong>and</strong> perform database searches.<br />

System <strong>and</strong> Methods<br />

The Biology Workbench is a set of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) applications<br />

written in PERL (Wall <strong>and</strong> Schwartz, 1991) <strong>and</strong> C languages.<br />

The Workbench uses a Netscape Web Server, which can be run on any small<br />

workstation, <strong>and</strong> a Compute Server, which is a multiprocessor high-end computing<br />

platform. The Workbench is accessible from any client which is web-browser<br />

compatible <strong>and</strong> is networked. Any Web Server, such as Netscape Navigator or<br />

Microsoft Internet Explorer can be used.<br />

BWB <strong>and</strong> the HTML environment<br />

The core of the Biology Workbench is the BW.cgi program, responsible for<br />

h<strong>and</strong>ling, among other tasks, the communication between the tools <strong>and</strong> the web
