Web search engines draw from these information retrieval methods, but given the
dynamic nature and sheer scale of the internet, many differences exist. Web search
engines need to regularly index the web to keep up to date with the ever increasing
number of websites. Search engines use “Crawler” or “Spider” modules in order to
constantly trawl the internet, adding new pages to the engines search index. A query
module is used to search the indexes in order to return sites which meet the criteria,
similar to the methods described above. Despite whatever methods of information
retrieval the query module uses, the sheer amount of information on the internet means
there should be a large number of information which meets the search criteria. Web
Search Engines will use a Ranking module, in order to provide a results page to the end
user which is ordered by some criteria. And there exists the problem, how does one make
certain that their site appears on results pages so that web users can find it?
Techniques designed to improve the search ability of a website and making it appear
higher on search engine results pages (SERPs) are known as Search Engine
Optimisation.(SEO)
