Explore Oncology Nursing. Topics include<br />

pathophysiology, epidemiology, prevention,<br />

screening and detection, treatment modalities<br />

and clinical trials. Prerequisite: Certification of<br />

registration from CNO as RN or RPN. 30 hours<br />

Issues In Oncology HSCINSCC2<br />

Communication and psychosocial issues faced<br />

by patients and families living with cancer<br />

is the focus. Topics include communication<br />

skills, developmental issues, impact of<br />

cancer on patients and families, grief and<br />

bereavement and survivorship issues.<br />

Prerequisite: Introduction to Oncology Nursing<br />

You will examine the disease processes of<br />

various cancers - gynecological, stomach,<br />

liver, pancreatic, colorectal, bladder, prostate<br />

and testicular. The nurse's role in treatment,<br />

prevention and detection of these cancers will<br />

be discussed. Prerequisite: Introduction to<br />

Oncology Nursing (NRSGNSCC1). 39 hours<br />

An opportunity to integrate the knowledge and<br />

skills learned in the previous theory modules<br />

in a clinical setting. This clinical experience is<br />

48 hours in length. Hospital and/or community<br />

settings may be selected. Date, time and<br />

clinical site(s) must be arranged with the<br />

Program Manager.<br />

Palliative Care Certificate<br />

Ontario <strong>College</strong> Certificate<br />

Graduation Requirement: 7 courses<br />

Palliative Care aims to relieve the suffering<br />

and improve the quality of life for those who<br />

are living with and/or dying from a progressive<br />

life limiting illness. Learn to help patients and<br />

families address physical, psychological, social,<br />

spiritual and practical issues. Intended for<br />

regulated/certified health care professionals,<br />

the curriculum is based on standards of the<br />

Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association<br />

and the Canadian Nurses Association.<br />

CLINICAL COURSE (CLIN10033)<br />

INFORMATION:<br />

Clinical course prerequisites are successful<br />

completion of all related theory courses.<br />

(HSCIHZA69, COMM10084, HMNS10016,<br />

HMNS10017, HSCI10082, HSCI10083).<br />

Clinical courses can only be completed<br />

in spring/summer semesters. Exclusion<br />

from practicum may be approved via the<br />

PLAR process on the basis of the learner's<br />

documented current related clinical practice.<br />

An eligible student, if planning to complete the<br />

clinical course in spring/summer semester, must<br />

apply to Program Manager by January of year<br />

in which the student plans to do the clinical<br />

course, i.e. January, <strong>2013</strong>. Clinical applications<br />

are available online in course manuals, at IAHS<br />

in <strong>Continuing</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Health Sciences Office,<br />

Room 185 or by contacting Program Manager<br />

or Support Staff at numbers given below.<br />

Preclinical Medical Requirements: Current<br />

<strong>Mohawk</strong> <strong>College</strong> Medical Clearance, current<br />

Mask Fit Test, BCLS, and specific agency<br />

preclinical requirements such as Vulnerable<br />

Sector Screening, computer training, online<br />

orientation information, etc.<br />
