The essendon Mazda Australia Stakes represents Victoria’s first Group 2 race in 2012. Run in association with Australia Day
celebrations, Moonee Valley plays host to this key sprint race under lights on Friday 27 January as Black Caviar attempts 17
consecutive wins.
In the race’s short but outstanding history, the Essendon Mazda Australia Stakes has been won by some of country’s fastest horses
including Black Caviar, Special, Redelva, Schillaci and Hareeba.
A prominent inclusion on the race’s honour roll is W.S. Cox Plate champion, el Segundo (2007). Historically a race won by the
punters elect, Black Caviar ($1.70) continued the tradition and became the 10th favourite to win the race in its 24 runnings. Piavonic
(2001) and Flavour (1998) are the only winners of the race to pay double figure odds, paying $26 and $15 respectively.
This year’s running of the Group 2 essendon Mazda Australia Stakes will see the return of the world’s best sprinter, Black Caviar as
she embarks on her Australian Farewell Tour before taking on the world.
