The 2011 Tatts Cox Plate was another wonderful edition
of our signature race, with jockey Craig Williams
delivering one of the best Cox Plate rides aboard Pinker
Pinker to land victory. It was a daring ride by Craig,
waiting to take a tight run along the rails, and in so doing
saving every inch from the 800 metre mark. Pinker Pinker was equal
to the task, accelerating strongly when the gaps appeared, and the 4yo
mare trained by accomplished horseman Greg Eurell now adds her
name to the Honour Roll of Cox Plate champions.
Greg plotted his way through the Spring Racing Carnival with the aim
of having Pinker Pinker at her peak on Cox Plate Day. We have seen
Greg train high quality horses in the past, with his champion sprinter
Apache Cat winning many feature races. it is fitting that Greg has now
won one of racing’s feature races.
Congratulations to the winning connections of Pinker Pinker David,
Carol, Tracey and Peter Kirby and Julie Gazdowicz.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Tatts Group for their
sponsorship of the Cox Plate. This relationship commenced in 2006,
when Fields of Omagh was victorious, and extended through El
Segundo in 2007, Maldivian in 2008, So you Think in 2009 and 2010,
and now Pinker Pinker in 2011. This year marked the final year of
the Cox Plate sponsorship by the Tatts Group, and I thank Chairman
Harry Boon, Chief executive Dick Mcilwain, and executive General
Manager Bruce Houston for their support of Moonee Valley over the
past six years.
cHaIRMan’s
REpORT
Another of the highlights from Cox Plate day was the appearance of
super mare Black Caviar in the Schweppes Moir Stakes. Her effortless
win in this feature Group 2 sprint marked her 15th straight win, and
her 5th here at Moonee Valley. I look forward to her return to racing
as part of the Melbourne Festival of Racing, when she steps out firstup
in the Group 2 $200,000 essendon Mazda Australia Stakes on
January 27.
The quality of racing across the Cox Plate Day program was again
strong this season, with Americain winning the Drake International
Moonee Valley Gold Cup in great style, and the promising Manawanui
scoring a strong win in the Mitchelton Vase.
I thank all of our sponsors for their support of our Cox Plate Day
meeting, including the Tatts Group, Schweppes, Drake International,
Mitchelton Wines, essendon Jeep, Microflite Helicopters, inglis, 1300
Australia, Trojan Hand Tools and Drummond Golf.
The Moonee Valley Night Racing Season is in full swing, with many of
our feature races programmed for our February and March meetings.
I look forward to seeing you at Moonee Valley for our Premium Night
Racing meetings, and invite you to experience one of our many dining
facilities when you next attend a night at the races.
TATTs coX PLATE 2011
PINKER PINKER
WINNER WINNER
By Shane Anderson
When Pinker Pinker crossed the line a convincing
winner of the 2011 Tatts Cox Plate, a long held dream
had finally been realised.
David and Carol Kirby, who race the daughter of Reset
and Miss Marion, have had a long involvement in racing
and breeding which span some 40 years. In that time, they
have had their fair share of success with a steady stream of
winners racing in their name, whether bred or bought. But a
Group One win had eluded them.
As Carol Kirby reflected, “David and i always said to each
other that we would win a Group One race but we never
imagined that it would be the Cox Plate”.
Now in their 70s and having reduced their involvement in
both racing and breeding, David and Carol were persuaded
to attend the 2009 inglis Premier yearling Sale at oaklands
Junction by their accountant as a day out.
“The first person that we saw was Richard Kerry from
Millford Thoroughbreds and we asked him what he was
offering at the sale and he said that there was only one that
we needed to see, and that turned out to be Pinker Pinker”,
Carol explains.
“Funnily enough, Greg eurell was the next person that we
bumped into that day, and we have had a long association
with him. When we raced horses with Ray Lawson, Greg
would break them in and be involved in the pre-training.
“When he went out on his own, we sent him a few horses.
One of which turned out to be Nick On The Run, who was a
Group Three winner”.
At the request of David Kirby, eurell was asked to take a look
at the Reset filly.
“She was very neat and in great condition, very well
presented for the sales”, Eurell remembers.
“From the outset, she just had the loveliest attitude. Physically,
she possessed a really good hindquarter and she looked like
she had a great deal of strength”.
David Kirby purchased the filly for $120,000 and sent her to
Eurell’s stable.
“From the moment that she went into work, Pinker Pinker
always displayed that she had the ability to do whatever work
you asked of her very easily”, said Eurell.
“By the time she got up to a trial, Pinker Pinker seemed to go
to a new level. Like all good horses, she revelled under the
pressure and would keep stepping up to the mark”.
After a promising beginning to her career, Pinker Pinker made
significant progression as a three-year-old.
“We learned so much during her three-year-old campaign.
She could handle travel and race well, proved herself against
the best of her generation, and was effective on any surface
whether firm or soft”, eurell said.
“The greatest fear for a trainer is that a solid three-year-old
program can burn out a filly and then they fail to come back
as a mare but we always kept some fuel in the tank with
Pinker Pinker”.
After a luckless first up run at Caulfield, Pinker Pinker
destroyed her rivals when winning the Group Two Let’s Elope
Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.
craig Williams aboard Pinker Pinker after
winning the 2011 tatts cox Plate

“Her performance that day was outstanding”, eurell explains.
“She displayed amazing acceleration which suggested that she had
gone to a new level. But this was against her own sex and I still
questioned whether she would be as good against the males”.
After a close runner-up finish in the Group Two Stocks Stakes
(1600m) at Moonee Valley, Eurell tested her in the Group One
epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick.
“The epsom Handicap was a toe in the water exercise, basically to
see if she could measure up at the elite level. Admittedly, she was
down in the weights but her performance was very good.
“She lost momentum when racing through a poor section of the
track at a crucial stage and that pretty much proved the difference
between winning and losing”, eurell reflects.
,,
“But Pinker Pinker really thrived after that performance so the
Cox Plate became the goal.
“We took her to Breakfast With The Best at Moonee Valley on the
Tuesday before the Plate. Craig Williams rode her that morning and
he was glowing in his praise. i knew that i couldn’t get her any fitter
and that she was feeling really well within herself.
“everything had gone to plan until the barrier draw. i was terribly
disappointed when she drew wide, the same thing happened with
Apache Cat when he ran in the race a few years before and that
ended his chance”, Eurell said.
Initially, the race didn’t appear to be working out for Pinker Pinker.
“During the run, i was really concerned. Pinker Pinker was getting
shuffled back and held up, while most others were starting to blend
into contention. We got back to third last at one stage”, Eurell said.
“But then gaps started to appear and Craig had the guts to take
them. i knew at the top of the straight that she would reel in Jimmy
Choux”.
Craig Williams, who had previously won the Tatts Cox Plate in 2006
aboard Fields Of Omagh, was full of praise for Pinker Pinker.
“When i asked her to be really tough between horses she was great
and game, and when she came out to make her run I thought oh
great we’re going to have to chase down Jimmy Choux, but after i
gave her a little reminder and asked her to extend she was never
going to be in any doubt”, Williams said.
“She just won with ease, she gave me a beautiful ride and she was
awesome”. For Eurell, the moment proved surreal.
,,
There are so many mixed emotions
with winning a Cox Plate
but the main one is of relief.
craig Williams
riding Pinker Pinker
Pinker Pinker passing
Jimmy choux to win the
2011 tatts cox Plate
“it was funny. i like to watch races that i have a runner in on the
television as i find it a more accurate guide as to what is happening.
There was a private function in the owners and trainers area that
I usually watch the races from so I ended up watching the race in
the bar near the mounting yard”, Eurell said.
“A bloke was looking at me strangely and asked me why on earth
would I be in there when I had a runner in one of Australia’s
biggest races? Anyway, after she won he ended up giving me the
biggest bear hug you could imagine”, Eurell laughs.
“i just felt a bit lost. i couldn’t believe that i had just won the
ultimate race that you want to win and here I was getting a bear
hug from a stranger with everyone going off all around me.
“i remember doing a mad dash down to the winner’s enclosure to
welcome her back to scale”.
David and Carol Kirby had their whole family, including three
children and six grandchildren, with them on Tatts Cox Plate Day.
“it was such a wonderful day, to have the whole family present”,
Carol said.
“David hasn’t been in the best of health. it was very nerve
wracking but I had this feeling that we could do it. At the top of
the straight, i just knew that Pinker Pinker would get past Jimmy
Choux”. Now, over a month later, Eurell has had more time to
reflect on the achievement.
“i had such a wonderful ride with Apache Cat and he won me
eight Group One races but this was something completely
Pinker Pinker winning the
2011 tatts cox Plate
different, it was the one race above all others that I wanted to win.
“There are so many mixed emotions with winning a Cox Plate
but the main one is of relief. So much work and worry goes into
preparing a horse for the race, so to get rewarded like that is just
unbelievable”, Eurell said.
“To share it with Craig is pretty special. He knows my family and he
would often come around at Christmas with presents for my sons.
“it has been a real pleasure to watch him rise through the jockey
ranks as he was always a rider who would never give in until he
was one of the best”.
Eurell would like Pinker Pinker to be back to defend her crown in
the 2012 Tatts Cox Plate.
“The main objective is to have a similar program to 2011, to get
her back in work at the same time and try and replicate what she
did”, Eurell said.
“A five run program in a preparation seems to be a recipe that
works for her. The autumn will probably take in the Futurity Stakes
(1400m) at Caulfield and the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) in
Sydney.
“There is a possibility that she could have an international
campaign with the Group one Queen elizabeth ii (2000m) at
Sha Tin in April the most likely race, but nothing is confirmed.
“i just know that i want her back at Moonee Valley at the end of
october in 2012”.
PAssIoN
Scroll through the different sports – racing, AFL,
NRL, cycling, basketball, cricket, motorcross and, even, lawn
bowls – in both Melbourne and Australia and there’s
a common thread.
Woven among all these sports and, significantly, their
sponsorships is Gerry Ryan, a self-made millionaire whose
passion for sport knows no boundaries.
it began when father Jack and mother Madge institutionalised
the family – Gerry has eight siblings - gathering around the
crystal radio to listen to the Melbourne Cup in their Bendigo
home.
Seemingly from that moment, Ryan was hooked. History now
reflects that Ryan, owner of 2010 Melbourne Cup winner
Americain, has come a long way in more ways than one from
such humble beginnings.
No longer does Ryan sell newspapers on the street corner,
he’s the one making news right around the globe.
By Adrian Dunn
Ryan is at the heart of GreenEDGE, the Australian cycling
team which has secured a World Tour licence. And, no one
was prouder than Ryan when Cadel Evans, who he supported
and sponsored for many years, posted the first win by an
Australian in the Tour De France last year.
Later in the year GreenEDGE was launched at Moonee Valley.
interestingly, a 3yo gelding of the same name created an
impression with a debut win at Ballarat on its Cup day. No
surprises that the owner is Ryan’s Limerick Lane.
He played a considerable role when women’s cycling
pioneer Kathy Watt won gold at the 1992 Barcelona olympics
and has pumped an untold fortune into the Jayco AiS cycling
team, which will form the backbone of our London Olympics
bid this year.
And, there’s another entwined link – Jayco, the caravan
company that Ryan founded in 1976 with a staff of eight that
has now ballooned to 850 with an annual turnover of $250
million.
,,
,,
I really enjoy the breeding side. Even if
I don’t directly own the horse, I get
a kick out of one of my breed winning.
Jayco is emblazoned on all the jockey silks not only in Victoria,
but also around Australia. Ryan has been one of the most
generous sponsors of racing since he really embraced the sport
more than a quarter of a century ago.
One of Ryan’s latest business ventures, was to purchase the
Cox Plate Day.
Valerie Ryan, jockey Gerard
Mosse, and Gerry Ryan
following Americain’s win in the
Drake International cup on
tatts cox Plate Day.
It was Stuart Trott, a former captain and best and fairest winner
at St Kilda, the club that Ryan served as a board director, who
was responsible for his first venture into racehorse ownership.
While that horse, Catherine Mary, also part-owned by the late
Travis Payze, another St Kilda legend, won a maiden at yarra
Glen and another modest race at Bendigo, she was the mother
of Shelbourne Lass, a Group winner, which spawned Ryan’s
interest in breeding.
“i sold out of her (Catherine Mary) and ended up buying a
Brocco yearling out of her and it ended being Shelbourne Lass,”
Ryan said.
About the turn of the 21st century, Ryan, always a keen punter
and race goer, decided to elevate not only his racehorse
ownership, but also his breeding interests.

Americain’s winning connections
18
“i really enjoy the breeding side. even if i don’t directly own
the horse, I get a kick out of one of my breed winning. I get
just as much a kick out of that as when one of my horses win.
I enjoy the breeding side, doing the matings and see how they
come out,” he said.
“over the years you have some success and you have your
quiet times. you hang in there and either try to breed or buy one.”
Among the more noteworthy winners Ryan has bred are
Avenue, a multiple Group winner who was runner-up in
last year’s Oakleigh Plate, Shrewd Rhythm, who won a Blue
Diamond Prelude and a Vain Stakes, and Al Garhood, winner
of the Grand Annual.
Ryan, along with prominent Melbourne businessman Kevin
Bamford, engaged local bloodstock agent Rob Roulston, a
Racing Victoria board member, to purchase a “stayer good
enough” to run in the Melbourne Cup.
He notes he was “very fortunate” that Roulston and his
European agent was able to identify Americain, which has won
four of his five Australian starts – Melbourne Cup, Zipping
Classic, Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Drake International Cup)
and Geelong Cup.
“He really should have won the (2011) Melbourne Cup.
Every trainer and jockey I’ve run into said he was the best
horse in the race,” Ryan said.
As luckless as Americain undoubtedly was, Ryan put into
perspective a claim that he was a tragedy beaten. “A
week before the Melbourne Cup, I went to Sydney to
bury a friend of 30 years and a business associate for 20
years. That’s what I call a tragedy,” Ryan said. Over the
journey, Ryan estimates he’s raced more than 100 horses.
“i certainly have the same passion. i’ve been fortunate to
achieve what most people dream about.”
While he has enjoyed untold success with Americain, Ryan
can’t wait for the former French stayer, now with David
Hayes, but with original handler Stephanie Nigge keeping a
watchful eye, returning to the track early in 2012.
“He’s such a beauty,” Ryan said. The same can be said
about Gerry Ryan.

Q&A
Q How did you see the cox Plate
before the race?
A It was a race of many chances but I
was confident i had the horse (Pinker
Pinker) with the right form and profile
to be one of the main contenders. Also
i became more confident after her final
gallop on the Tuesday morning before
the race.
Q And your role on Pinker Pinker to win the race, what
was the plan?
A After assessing the form of the opposition and their
respective barriers it was decided that our best option was
to be midfield/back. There was never a set plan or pressure
put on a specific way to ride her in respect to the last
800m of the race.
Q can you describe how the race was run and won in
your eyes?
A Before the running of the race we endured a couple
of small delays which seemed to affect a few of the runners
while Pinker Pinker remained calm and focused. Going past
the winning post the first time i was able to have her in
a good position (midfield one off the fence). The pace
was genuine throughout and Pinker Pinker stayed smooth
and in rhythm. When the pressure came on (at the 800m)
horses started making their runs and I made a conscious
decision to take a line inside of Sincero who I felt didn’t
look comfortable in the run, which enabled me
to follow up Rekindled interest and King’s Rose who in
turn were following Helmet. When in that position i
felt confident i was following the right horses and then the
runs started opening in front of me and I gave Pinker
craig Williams on Pinker
Pinker after winning the tatts
cox Plate
WITH
cRAIG
WILLIAMs
Pinker some rein and encouragement and she responded
with great acceleration. once straightening Jimmy
Choux was two lengths clear and looked to be our only
opponent. I felt I was going to run a very good second until
i asked her for one final effort which proved decisive.
Q What did you do that night after winning the
tatts cox Plate?
A We celebrated with all my family at my place with a feast
of Japanese take-away.
Q Having been suspended for the cup, where were you
when this year’s Melbourne cup was run?
A I was with my family at the Cinema watching the movie
Real Steel.
Q Has the 2011 Spring Racing carnival been the best of
your career?
A yes so far it has been.
Q An amazing way to cap off the carnival with four wins and
three seconds at Sandown, did you feel like you were in
the zone and every move was the right one?
A After being suspended for three days of the Flemington
Carnival I was glad to be doing the job I love which is race
riding. The rest was an added bonus.
Q With the volume of racing, it’s difficult to have everything
covered in preparing for races and preparing ahead of
time for carnivals. How important is it to have the
right support from a guy like Mark Guest? And what
other support staff do your rely on?
A My job is made easier by having Mark as my agent as
he has a great eye for assessing a horse’s ability and his
communication with trainers allows me the freedom to
focus on riding horses. Other support comes from my
family and close friends.
Q Do you find it difficult to find as much time as you’d like for
the ever expanding family being in the profession that
you’re in?
A At the start of every new season Mark and I sit down and
discuss our riding schedule which allows me to have a good
balance between work and family.
Q What’s the attraction for you to ride in Japan? can you
also give us some insights into any differences between
racing in Australia and Japan?
A It’s a great opportunity for me to be invited to ride for Mr
yoshida during their classic season. Since races held by the
JRA (Japan Racing Association) are only on weekends the
crowds that turn out every meeting are what we (Australia)
experience only during carnival time which means the
excitement is on every race meeting in Japan.
Q Best horse ridden?
A Throughout my career I have ridden a lot of horses which are
special to me. These are just a few that come to mind.
Pearl Prince – first city winner.
Main Strike – hometown (Cranbourne) Cup win owned by
family.
Prime Address – beaten in photo-finishes by him three times
before my brothers Jason and Damien purchased him and he
went on to win a Werribee Cup and an Eclipse Stakes.
Grand echezeaux – first Group one.
Toubougg – first overseas Group one.
Miss Finland – Golden Slipper and VRC Oaks winner who I
was married to before Larysa (my wife) came along.
Fields Of Omagh – Cox Plate winner who was having
his last run as an 8yo.
Dunaden – HK Vase
Q Best horse seen?
A i loved the bold front running style and fight of Vo Rogue.
Japanese champion Deep impact is another great horse who
now stands at Shadai.
Q 1st Group One winner?
A Grand Echezeaux.
Q First winner overseas?
A Budelli which won a maiden at a lingfield evening meeting.
Q What countries have you ridden in?
A Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Macau, Japan, uAe, France, england, Germany, italy, ireland and
Scotland.
Q Who was your mentor when you were an apprentice?
A My father Allan Williams was and still is.
Q Best advice received?
A Too much given to me over the years to come up with a
best.
Q If you weren’t a jockey what would you like to be?
A Professional tennis player.
consecutive wins.
In the race’s short but outstanding history, the Essendon Mazda Australia Stakes has been won by some of country’s fastest horses
including Black Caviar, Special, Redelva, Schillaci and Hareeba.
A prominent inclusion on the race’s honour roll is W.S. Cox Plate champion, el Segundo (2007). Historically a race won by the
punters elect, Black Caviar ($1.70) continued the tradition and became the 10th favourite to win the race in its 24 runnings. Piavonic
(2001) and Flavour (1998) are the only winners of the race to pay double figure odds, paying $26 and $15 respectively.
This year’s running of the Group 2 essendon Mazda Australia Stakes will see the return of the world’s best sprinter, Black Caviar as
she embarks on her Australian Farewell Tour before taking on the world.
sPRINTER
oF ALL TIME?
As the Black Caviar phenomenon rolls on, much has been
talked about where she would rank amongst the great
Australian and Australian bred sprinters to have graced the turf.
Our undefeated World Champion Sprinter continues to create
history each time she steps onto a racetrack, and with each win
comes further admiration for our latest thoroughbred superstar.
History will show us Australia has produced some truly
exceptional sprinting horses.
in 1957 a two year old named Todman won the inaugural
Golden Slipper Stakes by a staggering eight lengths. He was to
go on and win ten times in only twelve starts, and capture races
such as the AJC Champagne Stakes, the Hobartville Stakes,
Canterbury Guineas and Lightning Stakes in his short but stellar
career. in 2005, he was inducted into the Australian Racing
Hall of Fame.
The explosive Vain who was crowned Australian Racehorse
of the year (1969 - 1970) has captured racing enthusiasts
for many generations. In a short racing career he only tasted
defeat twice from fourteen starts. unbeaten as a two year old,
he demoralised his opposition in the Golden Slipper and was
simply breathtaking when running away to record an astonishing
ten lengths victory in the AJC Champagne Stakes. in the spring
of 1969 over the Flemington Carnival he won three times for a
combined winning margin of nineteen lengths. The ease of his
victories in the Craven A Stakes (now known as the Salinger
Stakes) and the Linlithgow Stakes (now known as The Age
Classic) have many astute judges rating him the best sprinter of
all time. His win in the George Adams Handicap (now known
as the emirates Stakes) on the final day, also happened to be his
last race, before retiring to stud.
By Neil Jennings
Sprints Handicapper Racing Victoria
We didn’t have to wait long following the retirement of Vain,
for the emergence of another outstanding sprinter to stamp
himself on Australian racing. Baguette won fifteen races in total,
including the 1970 Golden Slipper Stakes, AJC Champagne
Stakes, AJC Sires Produce Stakes, before winning the 1971
Newmarket Handicap and Doomben 10,000.
luskin Star became the first horse to win the two year old
“triple crown” by winning the Golden Slipper Stakes, AJC Sires
Produce and AJC Champagne Stakes in 1977. He would end his
racing career winning thirteen races, that included the Galaxy
Handicap and the Caulfield Guineas, and through his deeds on
the racetrack etched himself as a genuine superstar.
History will show us
Australia has produced
some truly exceptional
sprinting horses.
The mighty Bernborough in 1946 won fifteen consecutive races
and carried 63kg to victory in the Newmarket Handicap. His
versatility shone through in the Doomben Cup when with the
weight impost of 68kg he was able to claim victory. A winner of
twenty six races, he delighted a racing generation.
‘‘
,,
Our undefeated World
Champion Sprinter
continues to create history

,,
,,
From my perspective,
Black Caviar is the most
exciting sprinter I have
seen in my time in racing.
under a decade earlier a horse named Ajax was about to embark
on a wonderful chapter in racing history. He would win eighteen
consecutive races. His wins ranged from 1,000 metres to 2,400
metres and included the Newmarket Handicap in 1938 and in the
same year the Cox Plate. He was only to miss being placed once
in a career spanning 46 starts for 36 wins. His sire Heroic, was
also an outstanding horse who won twenty one races. He like his
son, was victorious in the Newmarket Handicap and Cox Plate in
the same year. Ajax and Bernborough will truly be remembered
as two of our greatest racehorses ever.
In the modern era, we have been blessed with sprinters of
the calibre of Takeover Target, Manikato, Schillaci, Placid Ark,
Shaftesbury Avenue, Mahogany, Testa Rossa, Hareeba,
Miss Andretti, Redelva, Apache Cat, Rancher, General Nediym,
Special, Spinning Hill, Alinghi, Starspangledbanner,
Redoute’s Choice, Exceed And Excel and Sepoy.
Australian bred horses have also dominated at international
level. The sensation of Singapore racing, Rocket Man, an eighteen
time winner and winner at the highest level, Silent Witness who
became a cult hero in Hong Kong following on from his racing
achievements, and in recent years Sacred Kingdom who was
voted Hong Kong Horse of the year in 2009-10, have highlighted
our sprinters to be the best in the world.
From my perspective, Black Caviar is the most exciting sprinter
I have seen in my time in racing. The sheer arrogance and
dominance of her performances sets her apart. Her win in the
Newmarket Handicap, run in the quickest time in the history
of the race was exhilarating. She has the ability to have races
in her control, within a matter of strides, whilst deflating her
opposition. I can clearly understand why she has been compared
to the great Vain.
We should all continue to embrace this amazing thoroughbred
as she continues her unbeaten run. She is set to embark on an
international campaign, and the world will witness first hand just
how good our Black Flash is.
Master Plan
After two years of planning and having given consideration to the
feedback from members and the local community, the Moonee Valley
Racing Club has formally lodged its Master Plan for redevelopment of
the Moonee Valley racecourse with the Moonee Valley City Council.
At the heart of our proposal is a reconfiguration of the racecourse
to underpin our future as a financial and viable world-class racing
venue and the development of eight hectares of our site for
residential, retail and commercial use over the next 15 to 20 years.
The MVRC has proposed a residential development in a central
location that will meet the requirement for increased population
growth in Moonee Ponds over the next two decades.
The new development would help provide a range of affordable
housing solutions that are currently lacking in our city. young, firsthome
buyers would be one of our key targets and we would
envisage that they will enjoy the suburb to the extent that they will
remain in the area with their families for the longer-term benefit of
the community.
This is not a public housing development and nor has it been
suggested by government and other stakeholders.
It is the Club’s objective to have exceptional quality buildings and
design that will enhance rather than detract from the suburb and
through good design, develop the precinct to reflect the emerging
lifestyle of inner urban Melbourne.
The proposal respects surrounding residential areas with higher
buildings located as far away from existing dwellings as possible.
Car parking would be self-contained within separate buildings and
substantial public open space of approximately five per cent of the
development site would be available.
This development would increase business opportunities in and
around Moonee Ponds Junction for retailers and service providers
and offer protection against expansion of retail precincts outside of
the municipality.
Following the Community Information sessions that the MVRC
staged last June, members and local residents provided us with their
views of the proposed future development and in some instances,
an indication of how we can do things better for our mutual benefit.
With the master plan now on public display, it is the responsibility
of the MVCC to engage the community in a consultative process
over an acceptable period of time and for Councillors to make a
decision on the merit of our proposal.
In support of our master plan, the Club has presented additional
independent studies and reports that include a focus on the
modelling of the area’s traffic and public transport, housing density
and the capability of the development to accommodate increased
services and community infrastructure in future years.
At various stages of our planning, the Club has made MVCC
executives, Victorian State Government, Opposition and local
members aware of our blueprint and its changes and have advised
of the feedback received. Racing Victoria Limited has also remained
informed and it is supportive of our endeavours to develop underutilised
land to assist with the raising of funds to improve the
facilities for thoroughbred horse racing well into the future.
The MVRC Master Plan aims to complement the MVCC’s Moonee
Ponds Activity Centre Structure Plan and we would favour inclusion
of the racecourse within that zone.
It is proposed that the development would be completed in four
stages over a 15 to 20 years timeframe. The Club would undertake
this redevelopment through a series of joint venture agreements
with developers. The first stage would be the redevelopment
of the car park on the western boundary of Moonee Valley
racecourse.
The MVRC is pleased that the formal master plan is in the public
domain for all to view and share our vision for the enhancement of
our property and Moonee Ponds generally with the quality of living
it will provide to new residents.
What happens next?
The Moonee Valley City Council will ensure it follows a proper
process in order to assess the proposed master plan and rezoning.
As part of Stage 1 of this process, the MVCC conducted two
community information sessions in the Pascoe Vale Room at the
Clocktower Centre on December 1and December 4, 2011.
During these sessions it:
• outlined the process for assessing the draft master plan and
rezoning.
• confirmed the issues that the community has already made
known in relation to the proposal.
• provided an update on community comments to date.
• explained when and how Council will undertake community
consultation on the draft plan and rezoning.
Stage 2 would include public exhibition and submissions from the
community. However, because the process includes a rezoning of
the land, consultation would not occur until Council has received
authorisation from the Minister for Planning to prepare the planning
scheme amendment. upon approval, it is likely that community
consultation will take place in the first half of 2012.
All information relating to the MVRc Master Plan
can be found on our website: www.mvrc.net.au
the club welcomes feedback from members.
Feedback can be provided via email to feedback@mvrc.net.au
Moonee Valley Racing Club is proud to
Stakes which will bring to a close Moonee
Valley’s Sportingbet Night Racing Season for
2011/2012.
Traditionally contested in February, the Power Tracker William Reid
Stakes was strategically repositioned in 2011. The meeting falls 13
days after the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and 15 days before
the Group 1 TJ Smith in Sydney. With the race now falling after
Flemington’s Super Saturday, it offers sprinters a clear pathway and
improved synergies between the Melbourne and Sydney carnivals.
The Club anticipates an enhancement to the quality of the field,
whilst also dramatically improving the end of the Sportingbet Night
Racing Season.
The Group 1 William Reid Stakes was won in 2011 by the
all conquering Black Caviar and the victory marked her 11th
consecutive win. The weight-for-age 1200 metre race has been
won by Australia’s premium sprinters including Apache Cat (2008
and 2009) and Miss Andretti (2007) in recent times. But the race
holds significant importance for Moonee Valley legend, Manikato.
The mighty Manikato claimed the William Reid Stakes over five
consecutive years between 1979 and 1983. The William Reid Stakes
was first run in 1925 and has been a Group 1 event since 1987. Six
W.S. Cox Plate winners have won the William Reid Stakes, including
The Night Patrol, Heroic, Tranquil Star, Chanak, Star Affair and Family
Of Man. Ten mares have won the race, the last being Miss Andretti
in 2007. Twenty-four 3-year-olds have won the sprint including ten
fillies. The last colt to win the William Reid was yell (2003) and the
last filly to do so was
Virage de Fortune in 2006.
After Miss Andretti won the William Reid Stakes in 2007 she then
conquered Royal Ascot, winning the King’s Stand Stakes. Cape of
Good Hope is another Royal Ascot graduate. After winning the
William Reid in 2005, he claimed the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot
4 months later.
The Group 1 Power Tracker William Reid Stakes has a rich
pedigree of past champions and is a must for all racing enthusiasts
to be on-course at Moonee Valley to enjoy the speed and thrills
of thoroughbred racing under lights. The night will also host the
$200,000 Group 2 Sportingbet Sunline Stakes (1600m) and the
Group 2 Sportingbet Fillies Classic (1600m).
THE MEN BEHIND
DARLEY
By Andrew Garvey
SHeiKH Mohammed might not have been at Moonee Valley
to welcome back his outstanding colt Sepoy after winning the
Manikato Stakes last spring. However for four men who are largely
the public face of the Australian arm of the Sheikh’s Darley racing
operation it was smiles all around as they welcomed back to scale
yet another group one victor.
,,
Darley’s Managing Director, english born Henry Plumptre might
not have the same profile with racegoers as jockey Kerrin Mcevoy,
trainer Peter Snowden and his son Paul who runs the Melbourne
stable but has spent a lifetime working in the thoroughbred
industry.
I thought I’d
give it try for 12
months and that
was 20 years ago
,,
Plumptre was a keen rider as he grew up in Kent but had his
interest in thoroughbreds piqued when his maths teacher took his
class on visits to racing stables where the horses he saw included
the great Mill Reef who was to go on and win the Epsom Derby.
After leaving school, Plumptre worked in the wine industry
for several years before a contact helped him gain a job at
Widden Stud in the Hunter Valley, giving him an entrée into the
thoroughbred business.
He then had further stints on studs in Australia and the uK before
running a successful bloodstock agency, later consulting to Darley
before taking over as Managing Director in 2008 shortly after its
purchase of Woodlands stud.
Since then there has been some rationalization of horse numbers
but with 260 broodmares at stud there are huge numbers of
racehorses coming through the system and the results on the
racetrack have been outstanding.
‘’Since the Woodlands purchase we’ve had a dream run. We are all
realistic about it going on forever but it’s fantastic at the moment,’’
Plumptre said.
Since taking up the role as Darley’s head trainer Peter Snowden
has trained 18 group one winners, over 750 winners in total and
prizemoney of $43 million.
It’s a world away from being a former battling jockey and then
trainer in the Hunter Valley where Snowden eked out a living in his
early days in much the same way his father Ross, another jockey
turned trainer had done.
Snowden initially worked as a private trainer for Segenhoe Stud’s
then principal Lionel Israel and later in Scone before an offer came
to work under Woodlands then trainer Vic Thompson and after
originally declining, Snowden figured it was an offer too good to
refuse.
‘’I thought I could plod along as I was, making ends meet, or give
myself and my family a go in Sydney and give them things that I
never had when I was growing up.
‘’i thought i’d give it try for 12 months and that was 20 years ago,’’
Snowden said.
in late 2007 Snowden was promoted to head trainer for Woodlands
Stud after the surprise resignation of John Hawkes and five months
later to the same position with Darley.
While Sydney based Snowden is a regular visitor to Melbourne, the
local stable is headed by his son Paul.
After working in the stables at weekends, Snowden junior joined
his father working under Hawkes upon leaving school and while he
rode plenty of trackwork, he did not have designs on being a jockey,
preferring to concentrate on playing rugby league through his teenage
years, where he was good enough to make several representative
teams.
After serving a few years as traveling foreman, Snowden was more
than ready to take charge of the Melbourne stable where he has been
an indispensable part of the Darley team.
Sepoy wins the Group 1 Sportingbet Manikato
Stakes on the Night Racing Season Launch
Peter Snowden

42
‘’He’s been with me for a long time and knows exactly
how I think so it great to have him there,’’ Snowden
senior said.
like the Snowden’s, Kerrin Mcevoy who shot to
prominence after winning the Melbourne Cup on Brew
in 1990, also comes from a strong racing family.
His father Phillip and uncles Tony and Peter were all
jockeys and he started his apprenticeship with his
grandfather Bill Holland, a trainer at Streaky Bay in South
Australia’s west coast.
After a highly successful stint as number two rider for
Sheikh Mohammed’s international Godolphin stable
during which he rode 8 group one winners, McEvoy
took up the role as Darley’s number one jockey in
Australia in 2008.
He rode four group one winners in season 2009-10
before a serious back injury sustained in a race fall led
to a long stint on the sidelines.
However he returned to race riding better than ever
earlier this year and his win on Sepoy in the Coolmore
Stakes on Derby Day brought up group win number eight
for himself and Darley in 2010.
salmon and Pink were
the order of the day at
the 2011 cox Plate, as
Inglis graduates stole
the show
Inglis and the horses it sells are synonymous with Australia’s
weight-for-age championship, the Group One MVRC Tatts
W.S. Cox Plate, citing recent winners MALDIVIAN, FIELDS OF
oMAGH and the great MiGHT AND PoWeR.
Add to that distinguished list 2011 winner
PInKEr PInKEr.
The daughter of Reset from metropolitan winner Miss Marion
was purchased by winning trainer Greg Eurell from the draft of
Millford Thoroughbreds at the 2009 inglis Melbourne Premier
yearling Sale for $120,000.
“it was funny how things work out, we were at the inglis sales
and i ran into David and Carol Kirby and they had a couple of
horses there that they had picked out and wanted me to look
at, we had a look at her [Pinker Pinker] and she was the one we
wanted and fortunately we got her,” said Greg Eurell after the
historic win.
Earlier in the day Moonee Valley was doused in Salmon and Black
as the crowd cheered unbeaten champion BlACK CAViAR
to her 15th win from as many starts. The great mare is also a
graduate of inglis’ Melbourne Premier yearling Sale, having been
plucked from the Oaklands sale ring by trainer Peter Moody for
$210,000 in 2008.
Horses purchased at inglis’ Melbourne showcase have starred
all around the globe in recent times, with South African Horse
of the year iGuGu, four-time Hong Kong Champion Sprinter
SACReD KiNGDoM and european Champion Sprinter
STARSPANGLEDBANNER to name a few.
Choisir colt STARSPANGLEDBANNER was the winner of
the first $250,000 inglis Juvenile, a 1000m two-year-old event
restricted to Inglis Race Series entrants that has kicked off each
Cox Plate Day since 2008.
Renamed the Inglis Banner in recognition of its inaugural winner,
the 2011 running of the event unearthed another top juvenile by
Choisir, as DiAMoND eARTH held off all challengers to salute.
Diamond Earth was purchased by her trainer Anthony
Cummings from the inglis Sydney Classic yearling Sale in January
for just $60,000.
The Sydney Classic sale marks the start of Inglis’ busy yearling
sale series each year, and the sale is also the source of star threeyear-old
gelding MANAWANui, who added an easy win in the
Group Two Mitchelton Wines Vase to his resume on Cox Plate
Day.
Manawanui was plucked from Classic for just $45,000 by trainer
Ron Leemon.
,,
It is such a pleasure to see
Inglis’ clients be rewarded
with success on big days
such as the Cox Plate,
,,
said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.
“All four inglis winners were all purchased by their respective
trainers as yearlings, and in a clear indication that anybody can
be involved and have success in this wonderful industry a 10%
share in one of them would have only cost you between
$4,500 and $21,000.”
A RoYAL
occAsIoN
By Bruce Clark
Perhaps not that long ago it just seemed a distant,
somewhat aloof if not snobby get together under regal
recognition just to go to the races. Gentleman in morning
suits and outrageously expensive top hats, women behaving
appropriately as expected of a bygone era.
We had our carnivals here, fun and everyone could play. But the
perception of Royal Ascot was just the opposite. So observed
Dame Edna Everage to the assembled press when on a visit in
1976 she said, “wasn’t aware it was a racing event until the other
day. I always thought it was an exhibition of gas water heaters!”
Royal Ascot commemorated it’s tercentenary last year, 300
years after the then Queen Anne first saw the potential for a
racecourse which then was called East Cote.
Her Majesty’s Plate was open to any horse, mare or gelding over
the age of six, and seven english Hunters took place in three or
four miles in distance.
It took in 1813, the Act of Enclosure in parliament, to ensure the
Ascot Heath, although the property of the Crown, would be
kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future.
And so it is today and now at the most magnificent of venues
following a $500m rebuild in 2006.
But it is the history, the tradition, the pageantry and of course the
quality of racing that makes the Royal Ascot meeting of its own.
Some history snapshots - The precise origin of the Royal Meeting
is unclear. It was an event that evolved, perhaps, rather than was
introduced at a specific time, but the first four-day meeting took
place in 1768. Arguably, the meeting as we know it today started
to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807.
it was at around the time of the first running of the Gold Cup
that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure dress code
emerged.
So You think in action at Ascot
Beau Brummell, a close friend of the
Prince Regent, decreed that men
of elegance should wear waisted
black coats and white cravats with
pantaloons. Over the years, this has
evolved into the wearing of morning
suits and equally formal clothes for
ladies, who must wear hats.
The dress code has varied little
for men over the years but is now
written into terms and conditions
of entry as such for women – “Her
Majesty’s Representative wishes to
point out that only formal day dress
with a hat or substantial fascinator
will be acceptable. Off the shoulder,
halter neck, spaghetti straps and
dresses with a strap of less than one
inch and miniskirts are considered
unsuitable. Midriffs must be covered
and trouser suits must be full length
and of matching material and colour.”
in 1825, the Royal Procession as
an annual tradition began. The King,
leading four other coaches with
members of the Royal party, drove
up the centre of the racecourse
in front of the crowds and this has
continued to the present day with
betting on the colour of the Queen’s
hat on the Thursday much watched.
In 1955, the rules of divorce were
relaxed and divorcees were able to
enter the Royal Enclosure.
But the royal meeting (and it is only
royal for the now five days in June),
changed forever for Australian’s
when Choisir monstered his rival’s
in the King’s Stand Stakes and then
the Golden Jubilee Stakes on the old
course.
Since then Takeover Target,
Miss Andretti, Scenic Blast,
Starspangledbanner and Haradasun
have won before the Queen and
the meeting has become a haven for
Australians. Why, Joe Janiak has even
been invited to afternoon tea in the
Royal Box thanks to the deeds of
Takeover Target.
And now the first Tuesday (which opens with three Group 1 races in a row), hosts the
unofficial Australian BBQ – it can’t be promoted or signed – but it seems everyone, not
just Australians know when it is on and where it is. And quaintly under bylaws, no fires are
allowed in the car parks hence it is hardly a BBQ in the true sense. But it is a must do if
travelling to Royal Ascot.
And the car parks (only after the bandstand singing of course, a bit of flag waving and Rule
Brittania gets you going), are as much a part of the Royal Ascot experience as the races.
But 2012 will be something different for Royal Ascot. They have been preparing for the
arrival of Black Caviar for over a year. The club courted her last year but when she resumes
her career aiming for 17 straight at Moonee valley in the Australia Stakes on January 27 – it
will be a case of “all roads” lead to Royal Ascot.
All going to plan, she will be before the Queen on Tuesday June 19. And she will have
an army of Australians, some togged appropriately, some just fanatics, and some intrigued
race fans from around the world, if not the Royal Box watching. Could it be a top hatted,
morning suited Pete Moody, from Wyandra Western Queensland, down for afternoon tea
with Her Majesty.
Who said Royal Ascot wasn’t fun too?
The Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge is a
pure test of speed over 955 metres. The barriers
are positioned in the 1000 metre chute and the
challenge will be to see which horse can break
the 55 second mark across the Sportingbet Night
Racing Season.
On each of the 18 night meetings in season
2011/2012, Moonee Valley will stage an
Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge heat, with
each heat carrying prizemoney of $55,000. The
Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge heat will
be programmed as Race 4 at 8:15pm at each of
the night meetings.
Last year trainer Peter Boynton with La Bella
Roo had the winning time of 55.48 seconds. The big
question is will the 55 second mark be broken
this year? The only way to find out is to be on
track at Moonee Valley.
The trainer of the horse that runs the quickest
time across the 18 race series will win a Mazda
