like the Snowden’s, Kerrin Mcevoy who shot to
prominence after winning the Melbourne Cup on Brew
in 1990, also comes from a strong racing family.
His father Phillip and uncles Tony and Peter were all
jockeys and he started his apprenticeship with his
grandfather Bill Holland, a trainer at Streaky Bay in South
Australia’s west coast.
After a highly successful stint as number two rider for
Sheikh Mohammed’s international Godolphin stable
during which he rode 8 group one winners, McEvoy
took up the role as Darley’s number one jockey in
Australia in 2008.
He rode four group one winners in season 2009-10
before a serious back injury sustained in a race fall led
to a long stint on the sidelines.
However he returned to race riding better than ever
earlier this year and his win on Sepoy in the Coolmore
Stakes on Derby Day brought up group win number eight
for himself and Darley in 2010.
