7. The extension of the opportunity to all Canadian universities to provide hosting
services as part of the Synergies network free of charge to all non-profit Open
Access Canadian SSH journals that qualify for SSHRC funding. Circulation of
interoperability protocols and standards along with estimates of cost
responsibilities would facilitate such an extension.
8. Continued access to OJS software at no cost for non-profit, Canadian SSH
journals accompanied by assurance of continued development to maintain
competitiveness with commercial alternatives.
9. Journal access to information, training, and conversion services for the set-up and
use of OJS and, where needed, to a low-cost program for back issues digitization.
10. Legal registration of PKP, within which OJS exists, as a non-profit entity with a
board of directors drawn from funders and users and specifically, in part, from the
Canadian SSH-research, journal and library communities and from the Synergies
Steering Committee.
11. Legal registration of Erudit as a non-profit entity with a board of directors drawn
from funders and users and specifically, in part, from the Canadian SSH-research,
journal and library communities and from the Synergies Steering Committee.
12. Legal registration of Synergies as a non-profit entity with a board of directors
drawn from funders and users and specifically, in part, from the Canadian SSHresearch,
journal and library communities and from OJS and Erudit.
13. The creation of a tiered structure by CALJ and CFHSS through which journals
could be offered to Canadian institutions in return for financial support.
14. Continuing effort by journals to
a. Take advantage of automated system to increase production and
dissemination efficiencies;
b. Position themselves to ease out of regular print runs as markets constrict
while retaining print-on-demand options;
c. Provide authors with effective indexing, linking, statistics, and other
measures aimed at assisting in both increasing author's readership and
their reputations (re tenure and promotion); and
d. Provide partners with access to the financial and publishing data needed to
determine a fair allocation of resources.
15. Methods and means to increase the awareness of Canadian SSH scholars and
researchers and the general public of the benefits on online and Open Access
journal publishing as outlined in this document.
16. Methods and means to make known Canada’s leadership role in taking full
advantage of the digital age to build a knowledge-based society under a slogan
such as “Research: Canada’s Gift to the World.”
17. Methods and means to monitor and evaluate on a continuous basis the
contribution and viability of this initiative as a means of enhancing the quality and
impact of Canadian research and scholarship.
