<strong>Lassen</strong>-<strong>Modoc</strong> <strong>Unit</strong><br />

implement commercial timber harvest, an analysis component to assist state agency review <strong>of</strong> a proposed<br />

harvest, <strong>and</strong> requires CDF approval for all commercial harvests on private timberl<strong>and</strong>s in California.<br />

Uneven Aged: A forest, crop, or st<strong>and</strong>, composed <strong>of</strong> intermingling trees that differ markedly in age.<br />

Also called All-aged. See Even Aged.<br />

Urban Intermix: An intermingling <strong>of</strong> structures <strong>and</strong> natural forest fuels within a forest setting.<br />

Wetl<strong>and</strong>s: L<strong>and</strong> containing much soil moisture for definite periods <strong>of</strong> time. Bogs <strong>and</strong> swamps, wet<br />

meadows, <strong>and</strong> lowl<strong>and</strong> seasonal pools.<br />

Wildfire: Any unwanted fire occurring in a wildl<strong>and</strong> setting.<br />

Wildl<strong>and</strong>: Uncultivated l<strong>and</strong>, other than fallow, neglected or maintained for such purposes as wood or<br />

range-forage production, wildlife, recreation protective watershed cover, wilderness.<br />

Wildlife Habitat: Vegetation, climate <strong>and</strong> other natural conditions suited to the life needs for an animal<br />

species to survive <strong>and</strong> reproduce.<br />

Wildl<strong>and</strong>-Urban Interface (WUI): The area where structures <strong>and</strong> other human development meet or<br />

intermingle with undeveloped wildl<strong>and</strong>. The expansion <strong>of</strong> the WUI in recent decades has significant<br />

implications for wildfire management <strong>and</strong> impact. The WUI creates an environment in which fire can move<br />

readily between structural <strong>and</strong> vegetation fuels. Its expansion has increased the likelihood that wildfires<br />

will threaten structures <strong>and</strong> people.<br />

Wolf Tree: Vigorous tree generally <strong>of</strong> bad growth form with a dominantly wide crown, that occupies more<br />

growing space than it warrants, so harming potentially better neighbors.<br />
