Vincent Tozzi, who charmed the crowd with his incredible tap-dance performance, seemed to be everywhere making sure that the benefit ran smoothly. as emcee he introduced the many dignitaries who participated throughout the night. he worked tirelessly behind the scenes with the teams of volunteers who served to ensure the success of the event. i later found that Vieques Baila was born of his inspiration and vision to encourage the arts, bring together Viequense and non-Viequense residents in an atmosphere of love, and benefit the children and worthy organizations that need support on the island. according to Vin, “in 2006, Vieques Baila began as a fund raiser for the Vieques humane Society. Penny Miller, owner of Sea Gate hotel and one of the original four founders of the VhS, asked me to join the VhS team after considering all options, i decided to combine my life lessons of dance, food and writing and create an event. i chose the Coliseo Municipal because i realized that many Viequenses grew up familiar with the gym. Plus, it was accessible to strollers and wheel chairs. Knowing that money in Vieques is not plentiful, i decided to make it a free event. it was all important to me that the event be geared toward Viequenses and non-Viequenses. i needed to show solidarity between the two communities. i chose Valentine’s Day simply because it is the day of love and this was going to be a loving event.” he made a plan and went directly to alcaldeso Damaso, who said, “i like what the humane Society does. i will give you everything you want (a building, tables and chairs and security) and i will attend your event and donate $5,000 to the VhS.” Then the hard work began. a group of volunteers offered their help and began getting the word out about the benefit. Donations came in, from a dollar at a time to generous offerings of food, supplies, money and gifts. as people opened their hearts and wallets, the event began to symbolize the true spirit of el Día de amor. For the past two years a highlight of the night has been the appearance of alcaldesa Delerme, who not only supports Vieques Baila with resources, but is a fantastic dancer. She and her dance partner, Victor, captivate the crowd with their performance and are especially adored by the youngsters who flock to their table for pictures and a chance to meet our mayor in person. in the years since 2006, Vieques Baila has provided musical instruments, music books, supplies and money to many various recipients. The event is completely non-profit and every cent raised goes directly to helping the children and worthy causes in Vieques, some of which are struggling to continue to provide their services. Some of the recipients include: 2007 – Vieques humane Society, envejecientes 2008 – CeniM - Special needs Children; CeDePReChO - Child Care Center 2009 – Children’s Municipality Band; eric Ventura Morales (naSa); S.n.a.P- Spay and neuter Program 2010 – incubadora; PaDi (Collectiva de Pescadores with Black Beard Sports) Children’s Band; Reach for Success 2011 – Will Colon’s Steel Band - The islanders additioinally, each year Vieques Baila invites over 30 elders for a special free dinner and will always help the envejecientes, the humane Society, S.n.a.P., incubadora and the Municipality Children’s Band. Le daré todo lo que quieran (un local, mesas y sillas y seguridad) y asistiré al evento y haré un donativo de $5,000 a la VhS.” Luego, comenzó el arduo trabajo. un grupo de voluntarios ofreció su ayuda y comenzaron a anunciar el evento. Llegaron las donaciones, desde un dólar hasta generosas ofertas de comida, artículos, dinero y regalos. a medida que las personas abrían su corazón y sus billeteras, el evento comenzó a simbolizar el verdadero espíritu del Día del amor. Por los pasados dos años, el momento culminante del evento ha sido la aparición de la alcaldesa Delerme, quien no solo apoya a Vieques Baila con recursos, sino que es una excelente bailarina. ella y su compañero de baile, Víctor, cautivan al público con su presentación y son adorados, especialmente por los jóvenes, quienes acuden a su mesa para tomarse fotos y la oportunidad de conocer a nuestra alcaldesa en persona. Desde el 2006, Vieques Baila ha donado instrumentos musicales, libros de música, materiales y dinero a varios beneficiarios. el evento es totalmente sin fines de lucro y cada centavo recaudado va directamente a ayudar a los niños y a las causas dignas en Vieques, muchos de los cuales hacen maravillas para continuar proveyendo sus servicios. algunos de los beneficiarios son: 2007 – Sociedad Protectora de animales de Vieques – envejecientes 2008 – CeniM – niños con necesidades especiales; CeDePReCO – Centro Cuidado niños 2009 – Jóvenes de la Banda Municipal; eric Ventura Morales (naSa); S.n.a.P – Programa de esterilización y neutralización 2010 – incubadora; PaDi (Cooperativa de Pescadores con Black Beard Sports) Banda de Jóvenes; alcanzando el Éxito 2011 – Los isleños – Banda de acero de Will Colón además, cada año, Vieques Baila invita a sobre 30 envejecientes a una cena especial gratis y siempre ayudará a los envejecientes, la Socieadad Protectora, S.n.a.P, incubadora y a los Jóvenes de la Banda Municipal.
