McDowell out 3-6 weeks

Crippled by injuries, the Oasis Golf
Center women's fast-pitch softball
team still managed a fourth place finish
in the tough Midland Invitational
Tourney.
Oasis was finally eliminated by Complete
Insulation of Saginaw, 9-2, playing
without two key players — Jan
Boyd and Sue McDowell
In the Complete Insulation loss,
McDowell was carried from the field
and taken to,a Midland hospital reportedly
with torn ankle ligaments. She is
expected to be lost to the team from
three to six weeks.
Oasis lost the game in the first and
second innings, allowing seven of nine
runs.
Boyd,'a pitcher, never made it to the
final game of the double elimination
tourney.
Against Daly Restaurant in game
three, Boyd was struck in the stomach
by a line drive off the bat of Sue Sanford
during a four-run Daly first inning
uprising.
Boyd was also carried from the field
and taken to Midland Hospital
Oasis rallied to overcome the fourrun
deficit outlasting Daly, 6-5, as
Denise Cifaldi allowed just three hits
the rest of the way.
PLAYING ERRORLESS ball, Oasis
started the tourney and its season by
blitzing the Jet Sets of Sanford, 9-0.
Boyd hurled a masterful one-hitter in
the triumph.
Oasis received strong defensive play
from McDowell, an outfielder, Vicky
Cavallaro, an infielder from Plymouth
Canton and Vickie Forest.
Cavallaro collected three hits while
Garden City's Sherry Kiselica had two.
Jody Humphries got Oasis off to a
fast start with a three-run homer in the
first inning.
In its second game, Oasis lost a
heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Girl Fri-
day of Saginaw. Cifaldi suffered the defeat
for Oasis. Despite the loss, she allowed
only one earned run and six hits.
Oasis opens its regular season Saturday
at 6:30 p.m. at Ford Field in Livonia.
Oasis returns eight players from last
year's state runnerup team. Returning
are: Boyd, Cavallaro, Cifaldi, Connie
Elstone, Val Harben, Tina Lilla,
McDowell and Julie Stafford.
New players on the roster include Diane
Connoughton, Forest, Jody Humphries,
Kiselica, Joanne Pachive and
Sue Barbolos.
The team is coached by Bob Boyd.
Bloom, Crespo capture mixed event
Oakland University senior netter
Ken Bloom and Plymouth Salem graduate
Becky Crespo teamed up to win
the Lipton Mixed Doubles Tennis Tourney
held at Plymouth Canton High
School last Saturday.
Bloom and Crespo defeated Burt
Graham and Beth Redmond in the
finals of the 16-team tourney, 6-3, 6-1.
In the semifinals, Bloom and Crespo
downed A1 Burton and Beata Gehringer
in straight sets while Graham and Red-
McCloskey joins Plymouth church
Catharine McCloskey, in her final
year at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary,
has begun her tenure as summer
assistant at the First United Presbyterian
Church in Plymouth.

Bloom is also a Salem grad (1975)
and played No. 2 singles at Oakland
where he went undefeated in regular
season play. He qualified for the NCAA
Division II nationals last month.
Crespo was Salem's No. 1 player last
fall and was a starting shortstop in
softball this spring for coach Livi Way.

28-29, where 16 teams will compete.

The Plymouth netters succeed Ron
Pinak and Alicia Garbites as local
winners. Some 16 teams entered this
year's local event.
"We had five more teams this year
than we did last year," said tourney director
Kerry Hlady. "It was very cold
Saturday and windy."
The 32 regional winners from across
the country, their spouses and their
hometown tournament director will be
sent with all expenses paid to the National
Finals at Woodlands Inn and
Country Club in Woodlands, Texas,
Sept. 13-16.
