Food service firm is hired by schools
,The cafeteria lunch and breakfast
ograms in Plymouth-Canton Commuy
Schools will be handled by a proional
food service management
mpany, starting in September.
The school board Monday night, by a
vote, approved a contract with the
A Food Service Co. which is headartered
in Birmingham.
One of the results will be a five-cent
crease in the price of lunch this fall,
lother hoped-for result is a vast imovement
in the quality of lunches, acfding
to Daniel White, executive ditor
of finance for the district.
nother important factor to the
ard js that ARA has guaranteed the
strict a profit of $1,281 for food operions
for the 1979-80 school year compared
to an annual loss in food operations
in recent years.
S
|
a ARA will take over the entire cafeteria
program for the district on a contractual
basis.
{Included in the $1.4 million cafeteria
idget for the coming year is a $17,170
lanagement fee to ARA plus $78,070
salaries to a food service manager
bookkeeper to be under ARA's
iploy.
In fact, part of the contract with the
jstrict is a guarantee that Paul Siedel
of ARA will be the food service director
for at least two years.
Siedel has 25 years experience with
food service with the U.S. military plus
another 11 years with ARA, including
time as food service director for Jackson
Public Schools.
White stressed that there will not be
any layoffs of cafeteria workers now
employed by the school district. The
school district labor amounts to
$426,660.
Tom Yack, board president, told
spectators at Monday's meeting that
the decision was reached only after
months of exhaustive study on whether
to hire a management company and
which firm to hire.
Trustee Carol Davis said she was
convinced this is the best way to go,
particularly since there won't be a need
now fof, a central warehouse for cafeteria
operations.
The ^entral warehouse for purchases
at Central Middle School is being
closed down as the school district has
joined Livonia Public Schools in a
warehousing operation for purchase of
supplies.
"We did have the brown bag strike
last fall at Plymouth Canton High,"
noted White. "We hope ARA will si
