w cVIEW from CANTON CINT1R WAYNE AND LENORA Dunlap could not believe the turnout for their Sunday evening retirement party. "I expected about 50 people at the most,' said Wayne. There were 155 persons at the dinner reception in the Meeting House. Jim Sponseller, former editor of the Plymouth Mail, came from Rochester for the party. Jimmy Tamburini, who has played first trumpet for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for 25 years, was there He is an old friend ,of Wayne's and Bill Beitner's. He always came out to play at least one concert each season with the Plymouth Symphony — usually the pops. Louise Hauenstein, wife of the late Nelson Hauenstein who was a longtime member of the Plymouth Symphony, came from Ann Arbor. Glennis Stout, first flute, was there. Harold Von Bergen, violinist and by ELLIE GRAHAM charter member of the orchestra; Joyce Lee, violinist; Peggy Bunge, violinist; her husband, Earl Bunge, percussionist; William Hulsker of Detroit, bassoonist; Max Stroup of Detroit, clarinetist; and John Perpich of Plymouth, first bass were there Other members of the orchestra were Jean Braun, first viola; Dr. John Moehler, first clarinet; Mary Ann Marks of Brighton, cello; Linda Ignagi, violin. Bob Randall of Livonia, horn section; and Mary Beth Derderdian, viola, who played the piano for the singalong at the party. Ann Arbor dentist Merrill Wilson, who pla'ys horn, and his wife, Charlene Wilson, who plays first trombone, attended the party Former members of the orchestra Jack McKinny and Dave Wolter of Dearborn returned for the retirement party Emcee Nat Sibbold and his head table guest, Frances Swan of Grand Rapids, said they plan to be married next month another happy note for a very special evening MARTHA DAVIS loves the thankyou notes she receives from young students These arrive a week or so after she has visited their classrooms with her talk and display of rocks. Martha believes that the children appreciate displays that they can touch, so she usually invites them to hold the unusual rocks and minerals in their hands. Among her collection is a clear piece of rock salt. With all the beautiful geodes, crystals and semi-precious gems, you never know what will appeal to the individual students. For those who didn't read the story, Peter and Judy Kammeraad and their daughter, Jeuny, shared the experience, when their daughter, Kathryn was born May 29 in Women's Hospital, Ann Arbor. PLYMOUTH LIONS Club is generous in its donations to the community, to preventive eye care and to the blind. For example, at their June meeting, members approved the following donations: They agreed to give $264 for eye examinations and glasses; $600 to the Michigan Eye Bank; $600 to Welcome Home; $300 to the Penrickton Nursery; $300 to the Leader Dog School for the Blind; and $100 for a sign for Miller Woods They also donated a Braille watch. It will be the eightlf annual Dearie Day and the merchants, beaded by Ronnie Sebuck, are planning dozens of special features, sidewalk sales, enteri tainment, rides and games topped off ' by a dance in the evening. Community pays tribute to retiring conductor Wayne Dunlap summed up his 28 years as conductor of the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra as "the most enjoyable and satisfying time of my life." More than 150 persons — old friends, neighbors and members of the orchestra — gathered Sunday evening in the Mayflower Meeting House to honor Lenora and Wayne Dunlap who are moving to Texas later this summer. And^jere were stacks of letters from those who were unable to attend the dinner reception. Nat Sibbold, a former Plymouth resident, came from Battle Creek to be master of ceremonies. Sam Hudson, representing the Plymouth Rotary Club, reminisced about Dunlap's years (1956-1971) as a member of the club He recalled the summer concerts at the Pino farm when the maestro had persuaded his fellow Rotarians to become involved in the project and the amount of sheer manual labor that resulted. He told about the year the Rotary chicken barbecue became the Plymouth Fall Festival. Dunlap was appointed chairman of the cultural side of the festival and for years was responsible for entertainment, arts and crafts, during the early September fest. Hudson presented a certificate of appreciation from the club to the guest of honor. MARY CHILDS, mayor pro tem, read a proclamation from the City of Plymouth, signed by Plymouth Mayor Thomas Turner. It named June 24, 1979, a day to honor Wayne Dunlap. State Rep. Robert Law delivered a special commendation from Gov. William Milliken. Elaine Kirchgatter presented a resolution of appreciation from the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools and another from the Plymouth Community Arts Council. Paul Miller, tympanist with the orchestra for 28 years, was a student of Dunlap's at the University of Michigan before he joined the orchestra. He said he had seen the musicians become a family, with "good music, good fun under the gentle hand of Wayne Dunlap." His talk was laced with anecdotes that led fellow orchestra member Bill Beitner to say after the party, "I wish we had recorded Paul's whole speech." Miller went back to his student days when he was playing in the U-M Symphony Orchestra. "I didn't have a tux and I didn't know how I ever would get a tux." However, he bought a portable typewriter "which Wayne wanted to trade for his standard model. It was a good deal for me and I was prepared to make an even trade." But it didn't work out that way. "Wayne said, And I have an extra tuxedo I'll throw in with the typewriter.' " Paul Miller had his first tux. HE RECALLED the time the orchestra was doing "La Traviata" with the Michigan Opera Association. At the Saturday rehearsal, everything was perfect. Sunday morning, the day of the con- * cert, the lead baritone could not speak above a whisper. A replacement was found after several frantic telephone • calls. The opera was being presented in English and the substitute, who had sung the part in Europe and America, could sing it in both English and Italian. He took his place in the orchestra pit beside the conductor. The regular tenor, in full costume, mouthed the words from the stage. "It-was beautifr.l," said Miller, "the best mouthing on record until the tenor came to the most dramatic part. In his excitement, he lapsed into Italian, as. the on-stage tenor mouthed the words in English." There were other occasions which, in retrospect, were funny. They were not particularly humorous at the time. There were soloists who could not sing in the key in which the music was written. "Wayne was always very gentle. He would just ask us to transpose from D to C " Miller recalled the concert that the conductor left his glasses in the dressing room. When he Went to retrieve them, discovered the door to the pit was locked and he could not get back in. "And once he forgot his tux and had to borrow Bill Beitner's."- "BUT THIS orchestra is very special," he said. "And I've enjoyed every mile of the 80,000 I've driven to rehearsal." Miller commutes from Flint to Plymouth for rehearsals and concerts. In conclusion he said, "As Wayne would have said after his year in Vienna, 'auf Wiedersehen.' This is not goodbye." Parting gifts from the Plymouth Symphony Society were presented by Fran Lang, past president of the society. There was a pitch fork painted in the orchestra's colors, blue and white; a farmer-type straw hat with a baton in the band; and for Wayne and Lenora Dunlap, a pewter tea service with the orchestra logo and the years 1951-1979 engraved on the tray.
