It is official now the Detroit area
can claim three national bowling
champions.
The release of the official records
show that Bob Basacchi, who bowled
with the Goebel team in the all-star
leagues, now is the American Bowling
Congress all-events champion with an
official count of 2097. He rolled 681 in
the team event, 709 in the doubles and
707 in the singles.
Meanwhile, the Women's International
Bowling Congress released the
official standings of its recent tournament
and two Detroit area women —
Gerry Beattie and Mary Ann Duptula
are the new doubles champions.
It's been a long time since Detroit
has claimed three champions in these
prestigious tournaments.
IF Tl*ERE is any truth to the old
saying that youth must be served, the
young bowlers in the area are showing
the ability that will make them heard
from by next season.
One of the best examples came last
Sunday in the doubles at North Hills in
Rochester when Cheryl Daniels, 19, who
will bowl with Marge Kropacek's team
in the all-star league, rolled a perfect
game
After counts of 215, 220 and 206 she
started on a string of strikes that gave
here the honor that has come to few
other playgrounds. Games and intra-playground
events will be held with the leadership of the Recreation
The supervised playgrounds will be located at
the Old Village^t Fire Station No. 2.
Over 40 applications were received for summer
positions with th^ Recreation Department.
This year's sutnmer staff includes Steve Morman,
Gail Rowland, Maureen Meade, Bob Smith,
Karen Craddock, ^ony Vitale, Dee Gurriere, Paul
her 12 strikes was on the Brooklyn side.
ANOTHER YOUNG BOWLER to be
reckoned with is Aleta Rzupecki, bowling
her second year as an all-star. She
teamed with Leona Obuchowski to win
the doubles event in the famed Cincinnati
doubles in Ohio last weekend.
"IT WAS LIKE a miracle on Michigan
Avenue" was all that Terry Smith
of Redford could say when he won his
first Michigan Majors title in Ohio last
weekend.
To gain the honor he averaged 208
and won 10 of his 12 matches.
BARB BOHNWAGNER will have
good cause to remember her bowling
performance last week in the Ladies
Foursomes at Woodland Lanes.
The reason- she toppled the Big Four
or the so-called impossible split — the
4-6-7-10.
Another unusual performance was
that of DeLores Hareath. She had the
misfortune to register 11 splits in her
three games.
The pacemaker for the day was Sue
Schuelier with a 268 in 568. Behind her
came Jane Mokoski with 565 and Betty
•Woodstock with 541. Next in line was
Sue Berry with a 214 in 528.
