How to judge the jug wines
The typical wine shopper, needing
volume more than finesse as he often
does, approaches the jug wine
selections, if he is wise with some
trepidation.
Facing him are an almost too
generous number of choices, ranging
from names rather well known
to some rather esoteric labels.
Making a good choice is important.
While they are not costly, per
se, the sheer quantity involved
makes a bad choice hard to live
with. After all, there is little so
large as a bad bottle of wine or so
small as a good one.
So, some help is offered.
First, the nomenclature- If the
name is generic (referencing a region
rather than a grape) as most
will be, it doesn't matter whether it
is called Burgundy, Red, Chablis,
Rhine, White, Chianti, Rose or whatever.
The name means nothing (except
color designation) and there is no
way to know the kind of grapes that
went into the bottle. Perhaps that is
best But you do know that what you
are buying is a blend of assorted
variation (and perhaps vintages,),
but the blend is one that appeals to
the producer. And, short of tasting
experience, that is the only guide
you have, except price.
In general it would, accordingly,
be advisable to stick with a good,
dependable producer rather than a
totally unfamiliar name. But there
are so many familiar names that
produce jug wines — CK Mondavi
(Krug), Almaden, Sebastiani, Masson,
Gallo, Los Hermanos
(Beringer), Mondavi, Pedroncelli,
Souvein Parducci, Inglenook — the
list goes on.
Recently a comparative tasting of
California jug wines was held by a
class dedicated to studying California
Reds. The results are reported
as a guide to you in your quest for a
dependable jug wine:
Sebastiani Mtn. Burgundy, Rank
1, Mean Score 3.65, voted first 4,
voted last 0; Parducci '74 Burgundy,
Rank 2, Mean Score 3.74, voted
first 5, voted last 1; Inglenook Navalle
Burgundy, Rank 3, Mean Score
4.26; voted first 1, voted last 0; Colony
Burgundy, Rank 4, Mean Score
4.71, voted first 1, voted last 2; Zanetti
Burgundy, Rank 5, Mean Score
5.29, voted first 0, voted last 2;
Pedroncelli Sonoma Red, Rank 6,
Mean Score 5.82, voted first 1, voted
last 1; Zanetti Burgundy, Rank 7,
Mean Score 6.18, voted first 4, voted
last 2; Mondavi Red table, Rank 8,
Mean Score 6.47, voted first 0, voted
last 2; Gallo Hearty Burgundy, Rank
9, Mean Score 6.88, voted first 1,
voted last 4; Masson Baroque Burgundy,
Rank 10, Mean Score 8.00,
voted first 0, voted last 3.
The Friedman Ranks analysis, of
Variance was applied to t these
scores to test the level of significance
of these differences.
The analysis produced a chisquare
value of 34.145, which is significant
beyond the .001 level of confidence.
No paired comparisons
were run but at this level it is apparent
that the preferred group, say
the top three, easily exceed consistently
the bottom three.
A note on the Zanetti, it was
poured into two sets of glasses. They
all came from the same jug. Interesting.
The results suggest some stereotypes
need reviewing. The famed
Gallo Hearty Burgundy did very
badly, and "predictable" Masson
had a bit of a disaster. And the prestigious
Mondavi Red Table Wine,
generally well respected in the
trade, didn't do well, exceeded by
both samples of the $4 a gallon
Zanetti. Most of the other wines cost
$4 — $4.79 a magnum locally. The
relative strength of the Colony (at
less than $3.50 a magnum) was also
a surprise. That Sebastiani and Parducci
did well should surprise no
one.
Jug wines are one of California's
unique contributions to the world of
wines, offering as they frequently
do, excellent value for cost. Perhaps
this tasting report can serve as a
guide to your expanding experience
in every day wine drinking. The results
suggest strongly that the difference
between the better and
poorer are worth seeking out.
Symphony
plans tour
of Europe
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra
leaves Sunday, Oct. 28, for a 34-day
tour of major European cities and mu-
^ic capitals.
Twenty-four concerts will be given
in eight countries, all under the direction
of Antal Dorati, the orchestra's
music director. This tour is the
symphony's first overseas trip and represents
a major step toward the goal of
achieving international recognition and
status.
The first concert of the tour will be
presented in Barcelona's Paulau de la
Music on Tuesday evening, Oct. 30. A
second will be given the following evening.
Then the orchestra will go to Madrid
for its final date in Spain.
The concert schedule includes: Berlin,
Hannover, Stuttgart, Ludwigshafen
am Rhein, Frankfurt, Bonn, Munich,
Braunschweig and Dusseldorf, West
Germany; Brussels, Belgium; London,
England, Stockholm and Uppsala, Sweden;
Bergen, Oslo and Sandefjord, Norway;
Paris, France; and Zurich, Lausanne,
Basel and Geneva, Switzerland.
For Dorati, the visits to London and
Stockholm will make special
homecomings because he holds the post
of conductor laureate of the Royal
Philharmonic in London and was, for
many years, music director of the
Stockholm Philharmonic.
Appearing as guest artist with the
orchestra in London, Paris and Berlin
will be Yejudi Menuhin, violinist.
Menuhin was born in New York City of
Russian parents. He made his concert
debut at the age of 7. He recently won a
German peace prize for using music
"to bring closer people, races, cultures
and civilizations." He will receive this
award Oct. 14 in Frankfurt.
Complete tour programs, as well as
details of corporate concert sponsorships
and available Detroit Symphony
Orchestra board and sponsor tour packages,
will be announced soon.
Christ Church carillonneur Beverly
Buchanan will play an all-patriotic program
at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 4.
