Dance musical at the Attic Other Things and Company's production for all ages, called "Yellow Bus 'N Stuff," is continuing at the Attic Theater at 1 p.m. this Sunday. Other Things is a touring dance theater for children, which has performed in many area <strong>school</strong>s in the past two years. Olympiad '79 will present virtually continuous performances noon-1 a.m. at the Hart Plaza amphitheaters and/or the Attic Theater, 525 E. Lafayette, in downtown Detroit. Theater companies from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Portugal, Roumania, Scotland and possibly Poland will share the stage from this Saturday to July 8, with local companies. Also representing the United States will be the Howard University Theater Experience and the old Town Players from Vincennes, Ind. The Theater Guild of Livonia-Redford was to have been a participant in Olympiad after winning a local stage competition, but some of the performers are off in summer stock work. It was be impossible to get the group back together, according to Pat Secor of the guild. Hart Plaza performances, scheduled between noon-8 p.m., are free to the public, as are the open rehearsals which begin daily at 10 a.m. Admission is $2 to performances at the Attic Theater, which will be presented 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. HOSTED BY the Detroit Metro Theater Council of the Detroit Recreation Department, the festival is being held in conjunction with the Canadian National Multicultural Festival, which will bring performing groups from five provinces to the area. Rivera's working drawings — a find in the basement By CORINNE ABATT Since she began assembling archives for the Detroit Institute of Arts, Marilyn Ghausi of Bloomfield Hills has made some interestng finds. But, none before — and probably none after — will rival her discovery of Diego Rivera's working drawings for his "Detroit Industry" frescoes. They are on the four walls of the inner fountain court in the museum's main building. Mrs. Ghausi came to the museum in March of last year to organize the historical records Intended to be a short term project, it was funded with a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Committee (NHPRC). It was an ideal job for her because in addition to seven years experience as an archivist, she had specialized in art history and American history at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts. As of last October, the archives project was made a permanent museum department with a staff of two, Mrs. Ghausi and Claudia Hommel. THE STEPS LEADING to the discovery of the drawings, called cartoons, a word that comes from the Italian "cartone"' meaning pasteboard, in retrospect, seem logical. Controversy swirled around Rivera's work By CORINNE ABATT Looking at the Diego Rivera murals 43 years after they were completed, it's difficult to comprehend the controversy they once generated. A motion was presented to the 1933 city council that the paintings be washed away One of the daily papers suggested "Whitewashing", the walls as the answer. His mural in Rockefeller Center was smashed to powder in 1934. It almost happened in Detroit. But, Rivera was a man of the working people. His sympathies had never wavered and it was the workers of Detroit who found their artist in Rivera THEY STREAMED into the museum to see his frescoes of "Detroit Industry." And they saw themselves as a part of the mechanical age, of the assembly lines, smelting furnaces and moulton steel Edsel.Ford, who had donated $25,000 to pay for the work, defended the artist. And although Ford's statement was a gentle one, "I admire Rivera's work," it carried enough clout to quiet the dissenters and save the works. Before the outcome was certain Rivera wrote, "If my Detroit murals are destroyed, I shall be profoundly distressed as I put into them a year of my life and the best of my talent, but tomorrow I shall be busy making others for I am not merely an artist, but a man performing his biological function of producing paintings . . . Not only were the (\urals saved, but because of the foresight of several people, they are extraordinarily well documented — to the point where Rivera's presence is still in the garden court where he worked The latest, and major, addition to the documentation is the discovery' of Rivera's full scale drawings or cartoons, for the project. They were unrolled in the almost an acre floor of the north court last week, and placed on public exhibition briefly. Because the storage conditions had been favorable and because Rivera was an artist of gigantic proportions, these drawings are breathtaking v PEOPLE WHO prefer drawings and sketches to finished oils because of the intimacy of the medium, would adore these The two sepia-toned drawings of the ~>Tr A«v HOUSE nude female figures, best seen from three floors up, are so total in their rounded composition and have such depth with so seemingly little effort that the viewer feels as though he is standing in the midst of the art process — which, indeed, he is. Rivera kept a progress journal of the work on the Detroit murals and much of this is in the film, "The Age of Steel" made by Shelby Newhouse for the Ford Motor Co.'s 75th anniversary celebration last year. The film, which has been shown regularly at the museum, tells the story of the murals and includes interviews with several men who worked with Rivera on the project. Fortunately, too, Edsel Ford had the making of the murals filmed in black and white. The film adds to the completeness of the documentation and parts of it were used in the Newhouse film. So, not only are the murals well preserved at the Detroit Institute of Arts, but so are the materials directly related to them. RIVERA WAS well aware of the diverse opinions his art could generate. He wrote down his belief that the artist must be "concerned with all problems of social struggle ..." and he wad delighted with the Detroit commission and the opportunities it provided to visit the automobile plants and related industries, to sketch the workers in action and to tell their story. In Rivera's hands, faces of workers, American and Mexican, take on nobility. Often, in his murals of Mexican history and life, those who exploited the downtrodden have animal characteristics. He didn't feel the need to do that here, but his unpardonable offense in New York City was to include a portrait of Lenin. Even Nelson Rockefeller, who was instrumental in persuading Rivera to accept the Radio City commission, felt compelled to question a portrait of Lenin in a public building. Although Rivera had embraced communism in the early years it was more the ideology than the practice, he later became as critical of the Russian leaders as he was of any others he felt guilty of wrongdoing. But, whatever his politics during his lifetime, the recently discovered drawings reveal a compassionate, brilliant artist — one whose murals are among the city's richest treasures. The grant application was written from there. Fortunately, Mrs. Ghausi had a background in both art and organizing archives. In her work at the museum she had established that the cartoons did exist from correspondence between Clyde Burroughs, then director of the museum, and Rivera. Burroughs asked if the museum could keep the preliminary drawings and Rivera responded affirmatively, making them a gift. Up until last April the search to find the cartoons had been fruitless. But, on April 28, Mrs. Ghausi went into an enormous storage room looking for some architectural drawings. "I crossed over to the opposite corner and I saw rolls eight and nine feet high wrapped in plain paper — there were no markings. I unrolled a shorter one on a table. As I did, it passed through my mind that this must be the Rivera cartoons. I opened the first one in a dark room and it was a thrilling moment," she said. If she hadnH known what she was looking for, the cartoons might still be there, for the first marks she saw were sparse charcoal lines, not images. WHEN SHE RETURNED to tell the staff and they gathered to watch as the cartoons were unrolled on the floor cf the North Court, Mrs. Ghausi said, "The pastel was so fresh, it was incredible. This was the first time they had been unwrapped in 46 years." SHE ATTRIBUTES their generally excellent condition to the somewhat dark, air-conditioned, cool room and being well wrapped for storage. The cartoons contain the drawings for nine of the total 27 panels. Some are charcoal, several are black, red and brown chalk Rivera used his colors for the drawings of the two nude fertility figures — and with these he achieved a warm lush sepia. Traditionally, fresco artists attached their working drawings to the walls and used them for tracing. Rivera, Mrs. Ghausi said, placed another sheet over these, traced on that and then transferred the lines to the walls. "These cartoons are working drawings, not the same as the frescoes. Rivera, however, a master of his art, made a color chart for the chemist to follow for mixing pigments and left the rest to his own judgment. In frescoes the paint is applied while the specially prepared plaster is still wet. The artist must work quickly and surely before the paint dries and becomes part of the wall.
