Reading club is for singles only

If you're into the singles scene and
you like to read, then the Singles Booklovers
Club may be for you.
The club, based in Philadelphia, was
founded in 1970 by Bob Leach, a widower
who saw a need for an outlet for
cultured, unmarried people. He started
it to help them get acquainted through
their mutual interests in reading.
The club's founder now has an assistant,
his wife Ruth, who concentrates on
most of the paperwork.

Tibbitts and his wife, Florence, will
celebrate their golden weddfng anniversary
June 30.
Floyd Tibbitts and Florence Boring
were married in Detroit June 30, 1929.
He was born in Port Huron and she was
born in OrtonviHe. They were living in
Pontiac when they met.
The couple moved to the Plymouth-
Northville area in 1931. Tibbitts served
as a Plymouth City Commissioner
from 1949-1954. He was mayor of the
city in 1951 and 1952. They moved to
West Palm Beach, Fla. in 1958 where
they live at 2113 Wellington Road.
They have four children: Mrs. Rita
Ryder Shearer of West Palm Beach;
Lawrence Tibbitts of Steamwood, 111.;
Betty Whyatt of Livonia; and Pam
Gould of West Palm Beach. They have
10 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

The monthly publication lists each
new member, marriages that are the
result of correspondence and personal
profiles on members, listing their occupations,
hobbies or favorite movies.
Using code numbers instead of
names, the newsletter also lists each
person's age, height, city and state.
THE CLUB'S GOAL, according to a
member who has asked not to be
named, is to provide a large pool of
compatible people to meet.
"The club is a nice way to meet people
and it's a great alternative to the
bar scene," she said. "Most of the people
I've met through the club are over
30 and are tired of the bars where everything
seems so put on."
The club member said she joined the
club for fun after a member told her
about it.
"It's really quite popular. I discovered
there were 10-12 members in the
metropolitan Detroit area," she said.
According to the member, there are

in Canada and a few foreign
countries including Germany.

IN THE SHORT time the club has
been in existence, starting with just 30
members, there have been 50 marriages.
"I've had people fly in to see me after
we've corresponded but nothing
came of any of the meetings. Most of
them were nice and interesting to talk
to but they just weren't my type," she
added.
For the $19 annual dues fee, a member
receives the newsletter and a twoline
synopsis about him or herself in a
newsletter.
