In addition Equity side was given cornmon law jurisdiction:<br />

The said court in any suit or other proceeding<br />

instituted on the equity side thereof shall have<br />

jurisdiction in al1 matters which would be cognizable<br />

in a court of law and may grant therein to any person<br />

afl such relief and remedies as he may be entitled to;<br />

but in case at any stage of the cause in equity, it<br />

appears to the court or a judge thereof that the suit or<br />

proceeding may, for any reason, be more<br />

wnveniently, expeditiously or inexpensively carried<br />

out or dealt with on the common law side of the court,<br />

the court, or a judge thereof, may order the suit or<br />

proceeding to be transferred to the common law side<br />

of the said court as the Court or Judge thinks proper<br />

When a case was transferred frorn one side of the court to the other side the<br />

administrative officer was directed to:<br />

annex together aII the pleadings and papers filed,<br />

and transmit the same together with the order of<br />

transference or a copy thereof to such officer ... as<br />

the order directs?<br />

Through these changes each side of Queen's Bench acquired jurisdiction<br />

originally belonging only to the other side. Each side now had improved<br />

flexibility and each could dispense justice more equitably.<br />

A year after the jurisdictional reforms came into effect Chief Justice<br />

Wallbridge died. T.W. Taylor, who had been serving as puisne justice since<br />

1883, was named to take his place. Taylor was sworn on October 22, 1887, and<br />

was to hold the chief justiceship until his retirement in 1899? He had ben a<br />

master in chancery in Ontario, and was known for his experience in equity
