Pleadings appear in the registers under eight column headings: Number;<br />
Style of Suit; Bill. Date of Filing, etc.; Answer, Dernurrer, etc., and Date of Filing;<br />
Date of Order Pro Confessa. and of Entering Note of Default; Replication and<br />
Date of Filing; Note Disputing Claim and Date of Filing; and Remarks. Pleadings<br />
are defined as:<br />
Statements in writing served by each party<br />
altematively to his opponent, stating the facts relied<br />
on to support his case and giving al1 details his<br />
opponent needs to know in order to prepare his case<br />
in answer. The usual pleadings in an action are the<br />
statement of daim, the defence, any counterclaim, a<br />
reply to the countercfaim, and any demands for<br />
further and better partiwlars.1°<br />
Each pleading has a purpose and, taken together, they reflect the progress and<br />
time span of a suit.<br />
"Number" refers to the case number and it is used to access al1 related<br />
records, including case files. A "Style of SuiP (cause) entry is more detailed in<br />
the registers than in the index. It includes the full names of ptaintifF(s) and<br />
defendant(s), sornetimes a designation such as "Gentleman," and usually an<br />
address. If a petition is being made on behalf of the plaintiff (and there is no<br />
defendant) the plaintiff s name is sometimes preceded by "Re," for example, "Re<br />
the Estate of Yy-m Inkster<br />
