FONZ STRATEGIC GOALS Zoo Director John Berry has outlined a plan to make the Smithsonian’s National Zoo the world’s finest zoo by 2016. In support of this ambitious goal, in 2007 FONZ developed a strategic plan that charts a complimentary course to becoming the world’s finest zoo-support organization. The mission statement at the beginning of this report and the following strategic goals will serve as guideposts for the journey. GOAL 1 Provide an Unsurpassed Zoo Visitor Experience FONZ strives to connect people with wildlife by providing visitors an exciting and enjoyable experience and access to outstanding guest services, facilities, and staff—whether they visit the Zoo’s 163-acre park or its award-winning website. • • Connecting People with Wildlife Providing an Exciting and Enriching Zoo Experience GOAL 2 Expand the Partnership Relationship with the National Zoo and Other Partners FONZ’s partnership with the National Zoo is so integral to the Zoo’s mission that there are few aspects of the Zoo’s work—including its animal care and conservation-science programs—that FONZ doesn’t support. • • • Supporting Zoo Science and Conservation Advancing the Welfare of Zoo Animals Engaging Zoo Supporters and Partners GOAL 3 Achieve Organizational Excellence and Financial Strength At FONZ, organizational excellence means incorporating effective business practices that are financially and environmentally sound and foster the development of its next generation of leaders. • • Becoming More Sustainable Sources of Funds
