42 Friends of the National Zoo completed another strong financial year in 2007. • • • • • • Visitor Services recorded a second strong year of revenues in 2007, which included new food choices, new store displays and merchandise choices, and improved customer services. Membership revenues exceeded $2.8 million from the generous support of our many members and participation in exciting Zoo programs, including Nature Camp, Snore & Roar overnights, and ongoing educational classes for children of all ages. Donors contributed an additional $2.8 million in 2007 and $4.5 million during 2006 and allowed FONZ to fund important programs like the construction of a cheetah breeding facility at CRC, animal enrichment, and critical medicine and veterinary support to the Zoo. An additional $2.6 million and $160,000 in support was raised by our development staff for the National Zoo but given directly to the Smithsonian for the benefit of the National Zoo’s various projects. Our new winter event ZooLights, helped bring in record revenues for our Events department in 2007 by attracting about 40,000 visitors during a traditionally slow time of year. Investment income was successful in contributing more than $1 million dollars to the financial position of FONZ over the last two years. • • • • • For the second straight year, the generous support of members, donors, and visitors helped FONZ record revenues in excess of $21 million. Visitor Services departments continue to enhance customer services at a lower cost than in 2006. Education and Communication expenses supported our 1,800 volunteers effort, innovative learning opportunities for schools and the general public, and the publication of FONZ’s premier magazine, ZooGoer. FONZ has provided almost $9 million in direct cash support to the National Zoo, including its active capital projects, over the last two years. In total, FONZ spent more than $40 million on various important FONZ and Zoo programs during 2007 and 2006.
