32 BECOMING MORE SUSTAINABLE At the National Zoo, habitat conservation means not only working to preserve land and resources for giant pandas and dama gazelles, but also incorporating environmentally sound materials and practices in its own operations. In promoting ecofriendly, sustainable practices to its visitors, FONZ and the Zoo strive to lead by example. GOAL 3 Achieve Organizational Excellence and Financial Strength
• • • • Here are highlights of FONZ’s efforts to practice and promote sustainability in 2007: FONZ reached out to the public to help make the Zoo a recycling site for cell phones, laser and toner cartridges, and disposable batteries. Thousands of these items were recycled. FONZ increased its use of ecofriendly products, including cups, utensils, and plates made from sugar cane and corn in its food-service operations. The Earth Day tree-planting highlighted our commitment to sustainability and generated awareness of ways to help slow the pace of global climate change, starting with this act-local, think-global action. FONZ offset carbon emissions from the flights for the Stomp Out Carbon contest winners by purchasing a renewable-energy pass from TerraPass, a company that supports renewable-energy projects such as wind farms. • • • Sustainable design is being incorporated into the new Elephant Trails, including the recycling and re-use of materials from the construction site, geothermal heating and cooling, filtered and re-circulated water for the elephants’ pools, and operable skylights that will provide natural air flow and cooling as well as natural light. FONZ Nature Camp won the Environmental Education Program Award from the American Camp Association. ZooLights’ energy-efficient LED lights used about 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.
