26 SUPPORTING ZOO SCIENCE and CONSERVATION The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is an international leader in science and conservation. Zoo scientists work not only at the Zoo’s facilities in Washington, D.C., and Front Royal, Va., they are involved in field projects and training programs around the world. GOAL 2 Expand the Partnership Relationship with the National Zoo and Other Partners
Through its fundraising events, membership activities and programs, and other efforts, FONZ supports much of the Zoo’s work, including these groundbreaking science programs in 2007: ANTARCTICA • AFRICA Studies of nutrition and lactation in Weddell seals at Ross Island. • Algeria—Desert antelope surveys. • Niger—Establishment of a protected area for addax and other Saharan wildlife, in partnership with the Sahara Conservation Fund. SOUTH AMERICA • brazil—Ongoing efforts to breed, reintroduce, and study golden lion tamarins. ASIA • china—Giant panda population management and reproductive biology, and the training of panda reserve personnel. • myanmar [Burma]—Population surveys and studies of the movement and dispersal, habitat selection, and feeding ecology of Asian elephants. • Sri lanka—Ongoing study of the distribution and ecology of wild fishing and rusty spotted cats. • Thailand—Reproductive studies, captive breeding, and field surveys of clouded leopards. NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA • Nicaragua —“Bridging the Americas” program, a cross-cultural environmental education initiative that taught elementary students about Neotropical migratory birds. • puerto Rico/united States—Research, propagation, and future reintroduction of elkhorn coral. • united States [west, off coast of southern California]—Studies of the endangered island gray fox and the life history of an endemic subspecies of orange-crowned warbler in the Channel Islands. • united States [east]—Pinpointing declines in rusty blackbird populations and monitoring populations of the rare coastal plain swamp sparrow. • united States [east]—Supporting infrastructure for the Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Va. • united States—Studies of cheetah reproduction in North American zoos. • united States [Texas]—Studying range expansion of subtropical birds and the possibility that recent distribution changes might be due to climate change.
