of ZOO ANIMALS
FONZ supports the care of the National Zoo’s 2,000 animals in a variety of ways, from recruiting volunteer keeper
aides to providing funds for medical equipment, animal enrichment items, and exhibit improvements. In 2007, the
Zoo broke ground for its next sweeping phase of renovation, Elephant Trails, celebrated its first giant anteater birth
and wattled crane hatching, and announced a new agreement with the Chinese government to keep giant panda cub
Tai Shan at the Zoo for two additional years.
