28 ADVANCING the WELFARE of ZOO ANIMALS FONZ supports the care of the National Zoo’s 2,000 animals in a variety of ways, from recruiting volunteer keeper aides to providing funds for medical equipment, animal enrichment items, and exhibit improvements. In 2007, the Zoo broke ground for its next sweeping phase of renovation, Elephant Trails, celebrated its first giant anteater birth and wattled crane hatching, and announced a new agreement with the Chinese government to keep giant panda cub Tai Shan at the Zoo for two additional years. • • • • During this pivotal year, FONZ supported the Zoo’s tenet of excellence in animal care in many ways, including these highlights: FONZ’s Adopt a Species program raised $160,000 for the care of animals at the Zoo and its Conservation and Research Center. FONZ received a $1 million pledge from longtime friend of the Zoo Bill McClure, which allowed for the construction of the nine-acre Cheetah Science Facility at the Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center, which opened in October. FONZ volunteer keeper aides provided more than 32,000 hours of assistance to Zoo staff in caring for animals and exhibits by helping clean enclosures, prepare food and enrichment items, and conduct feeding demonstrations, among other keeper duties. FONZ recruited and trained more than 100 behavior-watch volunteers, who contributed more than 9,600 hours helping Zoo keepers and scientists track animal behaviors, a key component of Zoo animal care, breeding programs, and scientific studies. • • • FONZ funded one veterinary and one pathology resident, along with eleven trainees who assisted in various fields of study at the Zoo, including nutrition and genetics. For the second year in a row, FONZ hosted a holiday Giving Tree initiative that encouraged donations of enrichment items and funds in support of the Zoo’s animal-enrichment program. Enrichment includes the introduction of objects and other stimuli that encourage the animals’ natural behaviors and provide stimulation and exercise. In 2007, the effort raised $19,000 and brought in a wide variety of items, such as boomer balls, Kong toys, and cholla wood for animals, plus tools animal keepers use to fashion enrichment objects. FONZ volunteers contributed about 1,000 hours preparing animal diets in the Zoo’s commissary.
