ADVANCING <strong>the</strong> WELFARE<br />

<strong>of</strong> ZOO ANIMALS<br />

FONZ supports <strong>the</strong> care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong>’s 2,000 animals in a variety <strong>of</strong> ways, from recruiting volunteer keeper<br />

aides to providing funds for medical equipment, animal enrichment items, and exhibit improvements. In <strong>2007</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Zoo</strong> broke ground for its next sweeping phase <strong>of</strong> renovation, Elephant Trails, celebrated its first giant anteater birth<br />

and wattled crane hatching, and announced a new agreement with <strong>the</strong> Chinese government to keep giant panda cub<br />

Tai Shan at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> for two additional years.<br />
