22 CONNECTING PEOPLE with WILDLIFE The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is a place like no other—one of the world’s finest zoos and one of the few that opens its gates for free to millions each year. With a fascinating array of animals and programs, the opportunities to educate, entertain, and inspire are endless. GOAL 1 Provide an Unsurpassed Zoo Visitor Experience
VISITATION • • The National Zoo welcomed more than 2.6 million visitors, one of its best years of attendance. The Zoo/FONZ website registered nearly 25 million visits. EDUCATION • FONZ’s education initiatives expanded in 2007 to accommodate demand. An estimated 1.5 million people participated in these programs. FONZ reached educators and students via the following outlets: - - Here are a few highlights of our efforts to connect people with wildlife in 2007: An estimated 25,000 students and teachers from around the world downloaded and used, for free, our Zoo- and conservation-related activity and curriculum guides. FONZ also reached students and educators via classes, summer camps, and school partnerships, including a summer day camp for students in kindergarten through 5th grade and an overnight camp at the Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center for 5th through 10th graders. - - - FONZ’s volunteer-led exhibit-interpreter programs reached more than 1 million visitors. Ecotourism opportunities for adults, families, and teens, including the Eco-Explorers teen travel program, provided firsthand educational adventures in Alaska, China, and other far-flung locales. Many others were reached via professional training, workshops, and fellowships, including courses in wildlife conservation and management, biodiversity monitoring and assessment, and zoological medicine. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES • • FONZ organized and ran a host of free events that brought people to the Zoo and closer to wildlife. These included the African-American Family Celebration on Easter Monday, the Sunset Serenades concert series, and Fiesta Musical, the Zoo’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration highlighting Latin American cultures and wildlife. The number of Snore & Roar sleepovers and available classes grew in response to heavy demand.
