Pharmaceutical Committee<br />

The Pharmaceutical Committee ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed a busy 2004<br />

agenda explor<strong>in</strong>g the issues <strong>of</strong> access, pric<strong>in</strong>g, and reimbursement<br />

under the leadership <strong>of</strong> Daniel O’Day, General<br />

Manager, Roche A/S, and a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Chamber</strong>’s Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Directors, who was na<strong>med</strong> Committee Chairman <strong>in</strong> March.<br />

At a session early <strong>in</strong> 2004, Pharmaceutical general managers<br />

met to discuss key <strong>in</strong>dustry issues with representatives from<br />

the U.S. Embassy. And <strong>in</strong> March, Eric Stewart, U.S.<br />

<strong>Commerce</strong> Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for<br />

Europe, jo<strong>in</strong>ed the committee to discuss challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the pharmaceutical <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> Denmark.<br />

Our Vision<br />

We want International Pharmaceutical companies <strong>in</strong> general to be recognized<br />

as an <strong>in</strong>valuable asset to the Danish Community and to the people <strong>of</strong> Denmark<br />

through our <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> research and development <strong>of</strong> new and better <strong>med</strong>ic<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

To achieve this, we will:<br />

• Establish an understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> how access to <strong>in</strong>novative pharmaceuticals<br />

contribute to the improvement <strong>of</strong> peoples health <strong>in</strong> Denmark<br />

• Proactively seek <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> the Danish Healthcare system and to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

access to <strong>med</strong>ic<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> alignment with <strong>in</strong>ternational best practice<br />

• Ensure that decisions made <strong>in</strong> the future political environment will not<br />

endanger the availability <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>med</strong>ic<strong>in</strong>es vital to patients and society.<br />

The key focus for the committee is to engage <strong>in</strong> activities to improve the overall<br />

image <strong>of</strong> research-based companies <strong>in</strong> Denmark through public relations and<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs with various stakeholders <strong>in</strong> the Danish healthcare system <strong>in</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

with the Danish Pharmaceutical Industry association, LIF.<br />

Currently, general managers <strong>of</strong> the Pharma Committee are cooperat<strong>in</strong>g closely<br />

with LIF to move forward on important common <strong>in</strong>dustry goals.<br />

Human Resources Committee<br />

The Human Resources Committee’s mission is to provide a<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g forum for its members to consider strategic issues,<br />

facilitate the regular exchange <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation, share best<br />

practices with<strong>in</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> HR management, and provide<br />

a policy platform for key issues with<strong>in</strong> Denmark and the<br />

Nordic region.<br />

The Human Resources Committee ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed an active<br />

agenda <strong>in</strong> its first year under the chairmanship <strong>of</strong> Lars Wittig,<br />

Horton International, and the efforts <strong>of</strong> its Steer<strong>in</strong>g Group<br />

for<strong>med</strong> early <strong>in</strong> 2004. “We are extremely satisfied with the<br />

active participation <strong>in</strong> the committee’s work,” Wittig says,<br />

add<strong>in</strong>g that HR issues are prov<strong>in</strong>g to be <strong>of</strong> “relevant strategic<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest” to the broader AmCham membership.<br />

Participants considered whether a company should operate<br />

without a HR department on January 15. Guest speaker Lars<br />

Holten Petersen, Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director <strong>of</strong> Birch & Krogboe, a<br />

construction company without an HR department, sparked a<br />

spirited discussion. The committee met aga<strong>in</strong> at a Round<br />

Table discussion on June 10, “From Skateboards to Neck Ties,<br />

deal<strong>in</strong>g with Generation “Why,” which addressed how<br />

younger employees are impact<strong>in</strong>g organizations, how to<br />

connect with them, and whether they will conform to an<br />

organization’s values. On August 24, the committee welco<strong>med</strong><br />

M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong> Employment, Claus Hjort Frederiksen, to<br />

discuss Corporate Social Responsibility.<br />

The committee plans more such discussions <strong>in</strong> its effort to get<br />

to the core <strong>of</strong> challeng<strong>in</strong>g HR issues and put the knowledge<br />

ga<strong>in</strong>ed to work for the organizations <strong>in</strong> Denmark.<br />
