AGM Sets Board and Goals
AmCham Denmark reviewed accounts, named its board, and set goals to
build on what Chairman Jonathan Grover called a “tremendous year” for the
Chamber.
The facts and figures were discussed at the Chamber’s Annual General
Meeting (AGM) on May 4, hosted by PricewaterhouseCoopers in Hellerup.
Almost 100 members and guests attended. Jes Anker Mikkelsen, Partner,
Bech-Bruun Dragsted Law Firm, served as AGM Chair.
AmCham reelected the following members to its board: Jørgen Bardenfleth,
Microsoft; Jørgen A. Engell, A.P. Møller–Mærsk; Jesper Bertel Hansen, UPS; and
Chamber Vice Chairman Eskil A. Westh, Amrop Hever. Also, these board members,
who had been appointed to fill vacant seats during the past year, were
confirmed at the AGM: Torben Juul Andersen, Copenhagen Business School;
Steen Blomquist, KPMG; Chris I. Devries, Citigroup; Kevin Fix, TDC; and
Daniel O'Day, Roche. AmCham also welcomed Greg Burton, Economic
Officer, U.S. Embassy, at its board as an ex-officio liaison member.

The Global Economy Offers New Opportunities
Following AmCham business, Bendt Bendtsen, Denmark’s
Minister of Economic & Business Affairs, gave a keynote speech
to the gathering. He said that globalization is a challenge, not
necessarily a threat, and is, in fact, an opportunity. Investments
in education and research and development are the only ways
to exploit that opportunity. That was Minister Bendtsen’s bottom
line.
Investing in the kind of jobs and technologies that will thrive in
a global economy pays off, he said. Global competition “is not
just some theory,” he said. It is a “new reality.” The Minister
argued that Denmark needs to prepare to be a global player
now, because the expanded European Union has placed the
nation “once again at the very heart of Europe.”

Meets with AmCham Denmark
The U.S. needs to stay the course in Iraq, and depending on the United
Nations to fight terrorism just won’t cut it.
That’s part of what a delegation of six U.S. representatives said at a June 28,
2004, AmCham Denmark Business Breakfast at the Radisson SAS “Royal”
Hotel in Copenhagen.
The representatives were: House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO); Bud
Cramer (D-AL), Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; Ander
Crenshaw (R-FL) House Deputy Majority Whip; Kay Granger (R-TX), House
Deputy Majority Whip, Select Committee on Homeland Security; Ed Whitfield
(R-KY), Energy and Commerce Committee; and Roger Wicker (R-Miss),
Deputy Majority Whip.

the situation in Iraq would likely get better – for the Iraqis and
for international businesses looking for contracts there – within
30-90 days after the June 27 handover of power to the
Iraqis. Still, they did not sugarcoat the difficulties they expect
ahead in the war on terror.
Blunt said he was not confident in the U.N.’s ability to act in
difficult situations, and that NATO is probably a more effective
force against terrorism. “If we depended on the
U.N…the world would be stuck in neutral,” Blunt said.
Still, the representatives said they are optimistic and hopeful
that things will continue to improve in Iraq, adding that international
media coverage does not show positive aspects of
the situation.
