Seventy Patron and selected Corporate member representatives and their spouses joined U.S. Ambassador Stuart
Bernstein at AmCham Denmark’s second annual New Year's Dinner Party at Rydhave, the Ambassador’s residence,
on January 16. The occasion also marked the Chamber’s Fifth-Year Anniversary.
Bernstein was joined by AmCham Denmark Chairman Jonathan Grover, Senior Vice President, IT, Ferring
Pharmaceuticals; and guests of honor Mark Hoy, Vice President, International Marketing, Travel Industry Association
of America (TIA) and his colleague from London, Gabriella Vecchio, TIA’s Manager of International Marketing in
Europe. ‘This was a wonderful evening of excellent food and wine, and a chance for members to get to know the
Board members and the Ambassador better,’ says AmCham’s Executive Director Stephen Brugger.

Business legend Jack Welch joined U.S. Ambassador Stuart Bernstein
and AmCham Denmark Patron member representatives at an exclusive
May 13 Business Breakfast at the Ambassador’s residence,
Rydhave.
Welch, who was in Denmark to address a seminar co-sponsored by
the Confederation of Danish Industry and Berlingske Tidende, said
that more moderate rules are needed in two areas: corporate governance
and VISA restrictions.
First, “bad cases make bad laws,” Welch said of the Sarbanes-Oxley
(S-O) Act, which sets federal rules on domestic and foreign companies
raising capital in the U.S. The federal law was created to protect
shareholders after the implosion of some major corporations, such as
WorldCom, Tyco, and Enron. Welch believes that the law has initiated
auditing that has built the confidence of everyday investors. But
he said that S-O’s requirement that companies create audit committees
comprised of independent financial experts is “silly and ridiculous.”
This provision is “a killer to smaller companies,” Welch said.
And second, Welch said that current restrictions on student VISAs to
the U.S. – enacted in the wake of September 11 – are causing fewer
foreign students to enter and conduct valuable research in the U.S.
He called for a more balanced approach to “too vigorous a reaction.”
