Matthew Barney er en av vår tids mest feirede visuelle<br />

kunstnere. Her jobber han sammen med Bjørk <strong>for</strong><br />

første gang. I Drawing Restraint 9, i likhet med resten<br />

av Drawing Restraint- serien, ut<strong>for</strong>sker han <strong>for</strong>holdet<br />

mellom kunstnerisk kreativitet og selvpålagte<br />

begrensninger. Med dette temaet som utgangspunkt<br />

tester han ut teorien om at styrken i et kunststykke er<br />

omvendt proporsjonalt med vanskelighetene kunstneren<br />

må beseire <strong>for</strong> å iverksette det. Handlingen i<br />

filmen <strong>for</strong>egår hovedsaklig på et japansk hvalfangstskip.<br />

Her møter vi to vestlige gjester, Barney og<br />

Bjørk, som begge gjennomfører <strong>for</strong>skjellige mystiske<br />

ritualer innen<strong>for</strong> Shintoismen som gradvis <strong>for</strong>andrer<br />

dem. Filmen er både fargerik og visuelt spennende,<br />

og filmmusikken, komponert av Bjørk, er vakker<br />

og ut<strong>for</strong>drende. Resultatet er en absolutt uvanlig<br />

kjærlighetshistorie. Ritualer, spektakulære kostymer,<br />

historie og sjokkerende trans<strong>for</strong>masjoner. Se også<br />

Matthew Barney has been hailed in The New York Times as<br />

“the most important American artist of his generation.» In<br />

Drawing Restraint 9, and the rest of the works in his Drawing<br />

Restraint series, he explores the relationship between artistic<br />

creativity and self-imposed limitations. With this theme as a<br />

backdrop, he tests the theory that the strength of an artwork is<br />

inversely proportional to the difficulties the artist overcomes<br />

to complete it. Most of the plot of the film takes place on a<br />

Japanese whaling ship. Here we meet two occidental guests,<br />

Barney and Björk, who both go through several mystical rituals<br />

within Shintoism as they are gradually trans<strong>for</strong>med. The<br />

film is both colourful and visually exciting, and the soundtrack<br />

composed by Björk, is beautiful and challenging. The result is<br />

a meditative art experience.<br />

I In Between Days møter vi Aimie, en ung koreansk<br />

innvandrer til USA. Hun er <strong>for</strong>elsket i Tran, som er<br />

hennes eneste venn. Deres <strong>for</strong>søk på finne seg til<br />

rette i det nye landet er bakteppe <strong>for</strong> en historie om<br />

vennskap og kjærlighet. Aimie dropper ut av skolen<br />

<strong>for</strong> å tilbringe mer tid sammen med Tran. Samtidig<br />

er hun under press fra moren som har med seg en<br />

koreansk levemåte.<br />

Når Aimie oppdager at Tran er i ferd med å <strong>for</strong>late<br />

henne til <strong>for</strong>del <strong>for</strong> en mer amerikanisert koreansk<br />

jente, må hun søke nye svar i seg selv på hva hun skal<br />

gjøre.<br />

Regissør og manus<strong>for</strong>fatter So Yong Kim er selv<br />

innvandrer fra Korea og har vokst opp i en <strong>for</strong>stad til<br />

Los Angeles. Hun har brukt sine egne erfaringer fra<br />

en oppvekst med en enslig koreansk mor der det aldri<br />

ble snakket om sex og kjærlighet, når hun har bygget<br />

opp karakterene i filmen.<br />

In Between Days vant pris i Sundance og en kritikerpris<br />

i Berlin. En av årets beste debutfilmer.<br />

Aimie, a newly arrived Korean immigrant teenager, has fallen<br />

in love with <strong>her</strong> best and only friend, Tran. She tries to express<br />

<strong>her</strong> feelings <strong>for</strong> him, but is scared of losing their friendship.<br />

Their misunderstood affection <strong>for</strong> each ot<strong>her</strong> creates a delicate<br />

relationship that is challenged by the demands of living in a<br />

new country.<br />

To spend more time with Tran, Aimie drops out of <strong>her</strong> English<br />

class, which she is failing. She fights against <strong>her</strong> mot<strong>her</strong> who<br />

wants to remarry and then realizes she’s losing Tran to an<br />

Americanized Korean girl. Aimie’s world becomes more<br />

isolated, until she is <strong>for</strong>ced to look inside <strong>her</strong>self <strong>for</strong> answers.<br />

The film is an intimate character study of a young girl, coming<br />

of age and adapting to <strong>her</strong> life in a new country. Although<br />

Aimie’s experience is unique to <strong>her</strong> situation, <strong>her</strong> desire to fall<br />

in love and to be loved is universal.<br />

REGISSØR/DIRECTOR<br />

So Yong Kim har både skrevet og regissert In Between<br />

Days, som er hennes første spillefilm. Hun er også utdannet<br />

Kim was born and raised in Pusan, Korea, then immigrated to<br />

the United States when she was twelve. She studied painting,<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance, and video art and ear<strong>ned</strong> <strong>her</strong> MFA from The<br />

School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In Between Days is <strong>her</strong><br />

feature film debut.<br />

ThE WhISPERING OF ThE GODS<br />

The Whispering of the Gods er i følge Mark Schilling<br />

(Japan Times) årets beste japanske film. Den er<br />

basert på Mangetsu Hanamuras bok med samme<br />

navn som vant Akutagawa-prisen, Japans mest prestisjefylte<br />

litterære pris.<br />

Vi møter den unge mannen Rou, som etter å ha drept<br />

to menn, vender tilbake til det landlige klosteret han<br />

vokste opp i. Et religiøst sted der overgrep skjer<br />

daglig. Hans handlinger ledes av hviskende guder<br />

som taler til ham via små radioer.<br />

Rou setter seg opp mot Gud og trosser religionen<br />

gjennom utagerende og avvikende sex, vold og drap,<br />

og det er hans mystiske, instinktdrevne utsagn og<br />

handlinger som danner ramme <strong>for</strong> filmen. Dels sjokkerende<br />

scener i en verden uten godt og ondt, lukket<br />

bak synd og straff.<br />

The Whispering of the Gods fikk sin premiere på<br />

Tokyo filmfestival og har blitt vist i en kino spesialbygd<br />

<strong>for</strong> filmen, The IKKAKU ved Tokyo Nasjonalmuseum.<br />

The Whispering of the Gods is this year’s best Japanese film<br />

according to Mark Schilling (Japan Times). It is based on<br />

Mangetsu Hanamura’s Akutagawa-award winning book of the<br />

same name. This is Japan’s most prestigious literary award.<br />

We meet the young man Rou. After killing two men, he<br />

returns to the rural monastery he grew up in. Abuse happens<br />

regularly in this religious society and his actions are led by the<br />

whispering of gods from the Germanium radio he listens to.<br />

Rou challenges God and religion through abnormal sex, violence<br />

and murder, and his mystical, instinct-driven words and<br />

deeds <strong>for</strong>ms the framework <strong>for</strong> his shocking world.<br />

The Whispering of the Gods played at The IKKAKU, a theatre<br />

built especially <strong>for</strong> this film, located at the Tokyo National<br />

Museum. It has also been scree<strong>ned</strong> at the Tokyo Film Festival.<br />

REGISSØR/DIRECTOR<br />

Tatsushi Omori gjør med The Whispering of the Gods sin<br />

debut som regissør. Han har tidligere vært regiassistent på<br />

Hiroshi Okuharas film Timeless Melody (2000).<br />
