Path to Successful Career on Bay Street
constance L. Sugiyama
Constance L. Sugiyama is the Vice Chair of
Canada Health Infoway and was the first
woman Chair of the Hospital for Sick Children.
Recognized over her 35 year career on Bay
Street as a leading Canadian corporate and
mergers and acquisitions lawyer, Constance
has held leadership positions in several major
law firms, most recently as Deputy Chair and
partner of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. She
has also been recognized for professional
excellence and leadership by Women in Capital
Markets (2009), International Alliance for
Women (2010) and named one of Canada’s Top
100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s
Executive Network in 2009 and 2011. Constance
has served on many public and private sector
boards as well as advisory committees including,
the Hospital for Sick Children, Canada Health
Infoway, The Toronto International Film
Festival Group, SickKids Foundation, Luminato,
Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Asia Pacific
Foundation of Canada, Ontario Exports Inc.,
The Nikko Securities Co. Canada, Ltd., the
Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, and the
Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation and
Women in Capital Markets. Constance recently
joined Ryerson University as a Distinguished
Visiting Scholar in its Law Research Centre.
raj anand
Raj Anand is a partner and an arbitrator and
mediator with WeirFoulds LLP. His practice
includes the areas of administrative, human
rights, constitutional and employment law, civil
litigation, professional negligence and discipline.
He is a former Chief Commissioner of the
Ontario Human Rights Commission, and has
also served on several administrative tribunals:
the Boards of Inquiry under the Ontario Human
Rights Code and the Police Services Act, as

Co-Chair of the University of Toronto Tribunal
and now on the Law Society Hearing Tribunal.
He is a member of the Equity and Aboriginal
Issues Committee, the Articling Task Force, and
the Professional Development and Competence
Committee, and the Chair of the Working Group
on Challenges Faced by Racialized Licensees. He
has won numerous awards, including the 2010
award for Distinguished Career from the South
Asian Bar Association. In 2013 he will be an
inauguaral McMurtry Fellow at Osgoode Hall
Law School.
jeffrey w. Lem
Jeffrey W. Lem, a partner in the real estate
group in the Toronto/Markham offices of
Miller Thomson LLP, received his B.Comm.
from the University of Toronto in 1984, a J.D.
from the Osgoode Hall Law School in 1987, and
an LL.M. from the Osgoode Hall Law School
in 2002. He was called to the Ontario Bar in
1989 and admitted to the rolls as a solicitor in
England and Wales in 2000. Jeffrey is certified
as a Specialist in Real Estate Law by The Law
Society of Upper Canada and has been awarded
the Ontario Bar Association’s Award for
Excellence in Real Estate. He has also received
Martindale-Hubbell’s highest rating (AV®), and
has been recognized in the real estate field in
The Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory, The
Lexpert/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading
500 Lawyers in Canada, The Best Lawyers in
Canada, Chambers Global Guide to the World’s
Leading Lawyers for Business and Leaders in
their Field, and The International Who’s Who
of Real Estate Lawyers. Jeffrey is currently an
editor-in-chief of the Real Property Reports and
a Regent of the American College of Mortgage
Attorneys (ACMA).
