Tips, Tricks, and Traps CAROLYN J. CHAMBERS Carolyn J. Chambers graduated from the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in 2003 with a B.Comm. in Marketing. She received her LL.L. (Civil Law) in 2007 and her LL.B. (Common Law) in 2008 from the National Program at the University of Ottawa. She also graduated from Osgoode Hall, York University in 2012 with an LL.M. in Family Law. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2009, and is currently practicing family law with Gelman & Associates. Working with diverse clients is one of the things Carolyn enjoys most about her work in family law. She especially enjoys helping clients with issues involving culture and diversity. Justice Mavin Wong Justice Mavin Wong graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1984 and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1986. While at law school she was President of the Legal and Literary Society and a division leader at CLASP (student run legal aid clinic). During her years as a defence lawyer, Justice Wong was particularly interested in youth justice and she addressed the topic on many panels and committees. She co-authored the book on Young Offender Law with Justice Brian Weagant, and she continues to have a particular interest in this area. In June 2000, Justice Wong was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice. She has spoken at programs sponsored by Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadian Bar Association, Osgoode Hall Professional Development Program, and the Criminal Lawyers Association. She has also been a presenter on numerous Ontario Court of Justice education programs. Most recently, Justice Wong served as the Ontario Court of Justice represented on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) and the Chair of the Toronto OJEN Committee. -32- www.facl.ca Currently, Justice Wong is the Conference Chair for the Ontario Conference of Justice. For the past ten years, Justice Wong presided as a criminal court judge in Metro East Court in Toronto (Scarborough), but transferred to College Park Court in August 2012. Justice Wong has been an active member of the FACL since its inception and is always happy to mentor young lawyers. In May 2012, Justice Wong was honoured as a “Local Hero” during the Asian Heritage Month poster campaign. Benjamin Na Benjamin Na is a partner in Gowlings’ Toronto office, practising in the area of advocacy. His practice focuses on commercial litigation with an emphasis on directors’ and officers’ liability; brokers’ liability; shareholder, partnership and cross-border disputes; and civil fraud and banking disputes. Benjamin has appeared before all levels of the court in Ontario and has appeared as counsel before the Federal Court, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the U.S. District Court and various administrative tribunals. Benjamin’s practice includes commencing and responding to injunctions, oppression actions and derivative applications in connection with claims regarding negligence, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and corporate governance issues. He has acted for investment advisers and brokerage firms involving the governance of the brokerage and investment industry, including licensing and investigation issues, duties and obligations of advisers and compliance officers as well as mediation, arbitration, disciplinary and compliance hearings. Benjamin also acts on behalf of financial institutions and commercial lenders pursuing various types of injunctive relief and the recovery of assets and loans related to fraud and auditors’ negligence matters.
ian Hu Ian Hu was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Toronto. After completing a Master’s degree in philosophy at the University of Toronto, Ian obtained his J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, where he was the Pro Bono Students Canada coordinator. As a law student he also participated at Parkdale Community Legal Services in the Worker’s Rights Group. Specializing in personal injury law, Ian only represents those who have been seriously injured. Ian is committed to advocating on behalf of the Asian Canadian community. As a Mandarin and Cantonese speaker he is proud to contribute to both his profession and his community. Ian enjoys snowboarding, sailing, and cross country skiing. He plays basketball but he can’t jump very high. Daniel Wong Daniel Wong advises employers on all aspects of employment and labour relations including employee hiring and terminations, employment standards compliance, unfair practice and human rights complaints and the development and execution of initiatives and policies. He represents employers before the courts on wrongful dismissal and provincial offence matters, and before various administrative tribunals on rights arbitration, employment standards issues, human rights complaints, occupational health and safety investigations and workers’ compensation appeals. Daniel also conducts HR and employment audits on behalf of employers to ensure compliance with applicable laws and employer best practices. Prior to joining Osler, Daniel articled and practiced at a large management-side boutique firm and was also Employment Counsel and Privacy Manager at McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada. He is a presenter at conferences and training seminars, and has also delivered guest lectures at York University in the areas of employment and labour law. Daniel is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care. www.facl.ca -33
