In-House Counsel to External Counsel Jonathan Lau Jonathan Lau is currently Senior Legal Counsel at TVO (www.tvo.org), Ontario’s public educational media organization for mobile, on-line and television content. He is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and completed his LL.M. at Stockholm University (Sweden). Jonathan’s practice touches on all aspects of media/entertainment law, including copyright, brand management, and licensing. He also engages in general in-house corporate/commercial matters such as contract negotiations, marketing/ advertising law and privacy law. He can be followed on Twitter under his handle @MonsieurMoo. Jin Hwang is Staff Counsel in Morristown, New Jersey for Verizon Wireless, an American technology company serving over 95 million U.S. retail customers. Jin provides guidance to Verizon Wireless’ Northeast Area, comprised of fifteen states from Maine to North Carolina and as far west as West Virginia, and as such, is a generalist with experience and expertise in a wide array of fields. Before Verizon Wireless, Jin worked in-house at France Télécom in its Washington, D.C. office. Jin is very active in various bar associations. Jin will be completing her two-year term as one of the Northeast Regional Governors for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). She has been elected as NAPABA’s Vice President for Programs and Operations, a role beginning this November at NAPABA’s National Convention in Washington, D.C. She has been very involved with her home affiliate of the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey (APALA-NJ) for the past several years, including officer positions, co-chair of 2010 NAPABA Northeast Regional Conference, co-chair of the Professional Development Committee, and panelist at various functions. In addition, Jin has been involved with the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY), International Association of -30- www.facl.ca Korean Lawyers (IAKL), the Korean American Lawyers of Greater New York (KALAGNY), and Corporate Counsel Women of Color (CCWC), including as a panelist and mentor. Jin has received several awards from her clients including the Northeast Area President’s Award of Excellence, the Tireless Wireless Champion award, and numerous Cheers for Peers awards. Jin graduated from American University’s Washington College of Law where she was Articles Editor on the American Bar Association’s Administrative Law Review and earned her bachelor degree in Psychology and French Studies (with honors) from the University of Pennsylvania. Julie Wong Barker Julie Wong Barker graduated with distinction from the LLB/BCL program at McGill University and was called to the Ontario bar in 2007. She earned her M.A. while on a Commonwealth Scholarship in Mysore, India, and she earned her B.A. Hon. in English Literature from the University of British Columbia. Julie summered and articled at Davis LLP in Toronto and interned at a commercial litigation boutique in Paris, France. She joined Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP as a Financial Services associate in 2007 after which she was seconded to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). In 2011, Julie became Bilingual Senior Legal Counsel with MTS Allstream, one of Canada’s leading national telecommunications providers. Julie’s in-house practice covers a broad range of areas including: corporate and commercial law, competition, employment & labour, intellectual property, disputes, real estate & municipal law, and technology. She also supports the Health & Safety Committee. She earned her M.A. while on a Commonwealth Scholarship in Mysore, India, and she earned her B.A. Hon. in English Literature from the University of British Columbia.
Will w. Chang Will W. Chang has practiced commercial law for 14 years. He spent the first 6 years of his legal career at large firms – first Gowlings, then McMillan – before moving in-house. His in-house roles have included General Counsel at Thomas Cook, Head of Legal at Air Transat and, currently, VP General Counsel at Granite Global Solutions, a Canadian portfolio company for a U.S. private equity firm, having 7 lines of business in various sectors of the insurance, health and risk mitigation industries. Will uses a number of external law firms regularly, mostly for M&A but also for litigation, employment law, tax, securities and corporate maintenance. Will was named one of “Toronto’s Top Ten Heroes” by Now Magazine and one of Canada’s “Top 20 Catalysts For Change In Entertainment” by The Toronto Star. At age 24, Will became the youngest ever instructor at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he is currently an Adjunct Professor. Will enjoys pro bono work, has been a leading activist for a variety of causes and sits on the Board of Directors of FoodShare.
